Kinda odd. So the options are to schedule a cupcake game because you don't feel your team can handle the layoff that well, or you can't find a capable D1 program to slot in? Maybe there's another reason, but neither of those first two possibilities is terribly confidence-inspiring.

Why wouldn't they just reschedule the Dayton game? They just postponed their SJU matchup scheduled for Saturday, seems they are open this weekend.

I don't like this at all. Your playing a D3 program, who probably doesn't have the protocols most teams have in place, and this game doesn't count towards NCAA resume. Why take the risk of 1) having another COVID pause as a result of this game or 2) Getting an injury in a meaningless game.

I much rather take those risks in a game that matters. As this stands - it is a mid-season scrimmage. I don't like it.

Maybe it's a job interview.

This team probably isn't as good without "Sandman" since they moved to Maryland and dropped to DIII...

And from today's paper...
"The most likely thing to happen is we'll play VCU twice. From there, we're going to try to get as many games as we can against the best opponents we possibly can."
So that explains it...

C'mon man. I know this. It was a joke.

Apparently a bad one.

Kinda like this game.
I was mostly using your post as a springboard to throw out the possibility of us losing this game. Because who knows what can happen when you've been sitting on your butts for as long as our guys have.

On the plus side for this game, I've now learned that the former Capital Athletic Conference merged with the American Collegiate Athletic Association last year and is now known as the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference with schools ranging from Massachusetts to California.

Couldnt we of at least gotten an ODAC school? Macon is down this year.....got lucky to beat Ferrum.

Looks like they do have significant testing.

Maybe no one in a10 asked to play us Sunday? Is it on us or the conference to fill in the rest of our schedule? Would the conference let us turn down an offer for a game Sunday?

I think this game is the best move basketball wise. Can’t afford another LaSalle game. But seems a little fishy...

What St. Mary's coach says is exactly why we r doing this but regardless it's still a risk with Covid as Trap said.

Chris Mooney 2/10/21 to the RTD - "We're going to try to get as many games as we can against the best opponents we possibly can."

Also 2/10/21 - Spiders announce game vs. D3 St. Mary's.

You can't make this stuff up

Conference rescheduling is mostly handled by the A-10. The programs obviously have some input.

Okay - so you can't schedule anyone in the A10 on short notice. How about the CAA - any teams there open on Sunday, a drive away - looking for a game? At least that game would count. This game doesn't count in our NCAA resume - it is basically a scrimmage. Why take the risk? I would have much rather them just asked St. Mary's to come down for a closed scrimmage and we can all imagine what the score was.

SDSU did this earlier in the year, basically same reason as us - needed to get some work, fairly local team, sounds like decent covid protocols. I am ok with it - but I think it gets really sloppy after one half. Get some guys on the bench some work and let them play entire second half.

2nd half lineup
Wilson
Dji
Sal
Grace
+ let the walkons play.

If Gus groin sickness is all better, get him a bunch of work.

Is “groin sickness” a euphemism for the clap?

Are there examples of other, say, Ken Pom Top 100 teams scheduling d3 opponents as a 'sparring partner' when coming off a COVID pause this season?

I actually thought all D3 was cancelled this year. guess only some conferences did.

this will have been a really long break. I kind of like getting a game in that doesn't count. hope this helps get us ready for 2/17.

as for getting backups and walkons extensive time, I think that defeats the purpose of playing this game. we need to ramp up our regulars, not have them play 15 minutes and then rest.

Quote from Mooney after the game - "I forgot to get him (all of them in this case) in this game."

Excuse # 1 Mooney - If I play my bench too much, my regulars don't get enough work to get them ready for VCU
Excuse # 2 Mooney - If I play my bench too much, we could get beat
Excuse # 3 Mooney - Pressure is on me to make the NCAA NOW, so I can't play my bench much
Teeth chattering: "We needed a cupcake" that wouldn't count against our record.

It won't help the team much, but it is the best we could come up with on such short notice. I mean really, we just found out last year that there could be COVID pauses and scheduling issues during this season. And you expect us to have a rational plan in place? Or, that we should be able to make sensible adjustments on the fly? Ridiculous, unreasonable expectations.

Seems obvious that if UR would just pay the Athletic Director and the Coach far more money, and gave them contract extensions, chances are really good that they would perform better! :) :) Maybe try it sometime.

Silly me, I thought I was going to come on here and see something along the lines of... "this is a good idea to get a game in before we play VCU". Fact: the VCU game is the resume boost we need. Fact: a game against a cupcake in DI will hurt our resume, win or lose. Fact: a game against DII or DIII school does not count in our metrics. Fact: we struggled the first time back from our previous two pauses. So, this is actually strategically smart.

Instead, more whining. What a bunch of Karens.

Good points. Thanks.

How the perfectly fine name "Karen" came to be a pejorative I will never understand? The women I know named "Karen" are fine people and do not deserve disrespect.

Respectfully, what you see as whining others see as justified criticism. This could certainly be the right strategy to manage "risk". That said, I personally expect that this team should be talented enough to come out and beat anyone in the A10 even after a layoff. When you have so few opportunities to build your resume, I don't think you can miss opportunities to get decent quality games in.

It's not necessarily the wrong strategy, but by no means is it absolutely the right strategy.
