Richmond vs URI in-game

Exactly, Trap. Hurley and URI have passed us in 2 or 3 years. He started with a disaster of a program four years ago, and we started with a Sweet 16 team. Now look at where we both are. Humbling to say the least.
My guess is that there may have been some NBA scouts in the arena last night, and if so, they weren't there to scout the guys wearing white jerseys.

Hasson Martin is listed at 6-7, 230. He had 16 points and 16 boards yesterday. For comparisons sake, We have 3 guys on our roster with comparable heights and weights (4 if you count DT at 6-7, 210). That just shows the difference in how we chose to play. They were the tougher team by far.

Luke Murray, asst to Hurley,is the reason for URI success.Luke's father is comedian Bill Murray.Bill may have been at the RC yesterday and often comes to games.I'm sure he adds some humor to the stoic and tough as nails approach of Hurley.

Like father,like son.Not.

Hurley is recruiting at a high level - with 3 top 100 guys if you count transfer Kuran Iverson for next year. And add in some guys that were probably not too far outside of the top 100 in Hassan Martin and the frosh pg. To me Hassan Martin is a guy we probably don't recruit, because he doesn't fit the profile of shooter/ball handler - but many nights is the most dominant guy on the floor. I do think it would be helpful to step outside the box some and just get the best players available.

In fairness, I will say that URI is a big state school that is not known for academics, so it's not like he is having any difficulty getting kids admitted. I'm sure we would not have admitted some of those guys, for better or worse. Hell, Lamar Odom went to Rhody.

In addition to Hurley passing CM for ability, recruiting and performance I'd say Mike Lonergan has done the same thing at GW in a short amount of time too.

My personal ranking of coaches in the A10 today:

Smart, VCU
Hurley, URI
Miller, Dayton
Lonergan, GW
McKillop, Davidson
Giannini, LaSalle
Mooney, Richmond / Kellogg, UMass (tie)
Schmidt, Bonaventure
Martelli, St. Joe's
Ferry, Duquesne
Crews, SLU
Pecora, Fordham
Hewitt, Mason

Here we go with the admission standards argument. URI is a big state school, so we obviously can not recruit the same kids and can not compete with them.

We should probably petition the NCAA to make college basketball more like the High School setup you see in many states. Split private and public schools into two difference leagues. And then break down those leagues into smaller conferences based on school size. That way - all the large state schools can play each other and all the small private schools can play each other, and when its all said and done - you will have 15 different Champions because of the breakdown and everyone will get a trophy.

Trap, I'm not saying that at all. I have been pretty consistent in saying that we should ease our recruiting standards (academically) to get more kids in here. I'm just saying that it's a fact that Rhody can accept kids who we currently cannot, that's all.

And in fairness to Mooney, I would like to see him be able to recruit on an even plane with Hurley. I still think Hurley would get more top talent than Mooney, but who knows. Mooney landed Avila, and we didn't admit him. That's a fact. I bet Rhody would have.

Eight - I am not picking on you. I just know when we start to lose games - out come the excuses and this is generally near the top of the list.

I am with you - we should relax standards. Avila is a great example and I always like to pick AD Vassallo from the JW days.

Many on this board went to UR and some even played sports there. Its not Princeton and its not impossible. Admitting kids with lower standards does not mean they will fail out. They might need some help, some tutors, etc. But to me - that is part of college basketball these days - along with the nice locker rooms, charter flights, and million dollar contracts.

I don't want to see UR relax it's standards. We've had some outstanding teams in the past, with those standards, and I think we can do so, again, in the future. Patience, grasshoppers.

It's too bad a small private school with high academic standards can't compete with the big schools,

said Mike Krzyzewski, not ever.

After rewatching game IMO once we cut the lead to 1 the coach reverted back to old strategy playing not to win. He sub in Defense again SOS and the comeback was short lived as URI bounced back a 9 point lead. I don't care how much recruiting or talent we get their special individual strengths and talent will be suppressed with our coaching philosophy. CM stubbornly won't change to prove he is a innovator hurts the kids and program. What's use of innovation without adaptation.

the scoring post -DT foulout refutes the D for O rotation , at least in this game ..Time for let the scorers score , Coach. 30 minutes plus for TA TJ ANO K0 and lets see what can happen bc the other way isn't getting the results.

lol. we're playing 7 primary guys right now. really 6 with ANO out. do you want him never to sub or something? TJ, TA and K0 played about as many minutes as they realistically can.

While our FT shooting yesterday was horrific compared to our 70%+ average. All our 80%+ FT shooters yesterday clanked and shorted them. Not sure if it was just a lack of focus, or just a bad day. But URI was well prepared to foul DT and TD anytime they went to the basket hard and even stopped a couple of dunks. They knew there'd probably be no FTs made, so why not foul extra hard. Between the FTs and living up to being "one of the worst rebounding teams in the country", there was little chance we'd win this game. Even CM gave up on his half court D at 3 min mark. Really hope we start playing an 8 man rotation (now that we're w/o Zo) and use some full court pressing and trapping (to keep opponents off guard a little), particularly when playing "crash the board" teams like URI and GW. We need to generate more steals and TOs to get some easy baskets, especially in 1st half.

Poked in the eye? Are you kidding me, Mongo? I saw it happen, and Alonzo took a major shot to the head and not only has a concussion but an orbital bone fracture that requires surgery. So let's call a spade a spade. Those injuries don't occur without someone using their elbow and they're certainly not going vertical with their arms. These are the types of game where refs should get blackballed forever but for them they still get paid and no consequences for horrible officiating.

Agree with everything stated here.

I think one thing that should be obvious is that going into a season we really need to have a depth chart of 10 to 11. Injuries happen. That's just the nature of the game. Last year Ced, & this year we lost 2 players - one early & one Sunday. We need to have a deeper bench to start the season & place ourselves in a position where we're basically playing 7 or 8 at the most players. Also having a deeper bench allows starters to get a few more minutes of refresh time & the 9 - 11 players some real game experience & hopefully increase their confidence & skills in a game situation.

Why is it that we've played a short bench the last few years? Does it go beyond injuries? Recruiting issues, coach's confidence in the bench, etc.? I'll leave this up to others to provide input if you're interested.

Bottom line - last few years are showing us we've got to go deeper.

let's be fair, duke is in a top 5 conference and if you think that any or many of coach k's recruits would get in there normally as just a student, you are smoking something. even dean smith whacked him about academics when they were recruiting the same kids. small, private schools can compete in basketball if in the right conference.

We're playing 7 (now 6) because we chose to. Early this season it became pretty obvious we weren't as good as we'd thought we'd be and most likely not going anywhere so why not play a couple more of the Freshmen. I thought I loved redshirting but it hasn't done this group any good at all, in fact I wonder if it took the fun out of the game(all practice no play), made them not care as much, etc, In fact it also may have hurt our juniors? Who was really being pushed in practice to earn playing time?

agree, don't go for red shirting in basketball, football, hope all frosh get redshirted, different games. if we are red shirting because guys can't play here, then we are doing a poor job of recruiting. want guys coming in who are either starting or pushing the guys ahead of them, the only way for a program to progress and stay relevant. yes, you will get some guys who develop but you have to get some guys who are better than what you have OR, you get what we have been getting for the past few years.

Just from what I've seen in practice Mrashall Wood's game is a lot like TA. He has a nice looking very smooth outside shot. I think Terry is the better player near the basket. MW is not at all bashful or hesitant to take the 3 pointer but then in practice a lot of players are more aggressive shooters.
