Richmond vs URI in-game

DT gets time because others need to rest and stay out of foul trouble. Trey contributes more the DT. Against La Salle he didn't score, but he had 6 assists and 4 steals. Steals are huge, and assists are important. DT doesn't contribute much in terms of steals or assists, and usually has fewer rebounds than Trey. Today Trey had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. He only had 4 points, but he still gives us a lot in terms of helping others get good shots and playing good defense. If we had better options they would play, that goes for every player on the roster.

Ba Ba Booey to you all, my comments are on your scouting page. If I don't see you guys in the future, I'll see you in the pasture.

Dan Hurley basketball = hard fought wins.

Maybe Mooney should cry less and pump up his players more... Just an observation.

Let me know where to send money to buy a jersey for Hurley. He needs one, considering he spent about 25 minutes of game time three feet onto the court.

Guys, I'm game for ripping Mooney for recruiting or development of players but suggesting anybody eligible to play today log more of Deion's minutes is silly.

Rhody may have been the most physical team we've played all year. Not a good game for Josh or Kadeem. At all.

Mooney gets a pass today on Deion minutes because he had to with ANO out. Not sure he gets a pass on the other 21 games we played. Plus Deion is still starting for God only knows why.

Hurley's team is a street ball team.Tough, lock down D.They're young. The lefty sophomore Mathews killed us with silky smooth shooting.Their perimeter D shut down our 3's.They are noted for that.Hurley's team was the best I've seen in the A-10 this season. They grind and are physical. They will be going to Big Dance and will likely be an 8 seed. They have real ballers on their team unlike Broad Street who are well disguised cage fighters not real ballers.

We are the best win they have this season. Their resume is lacking. They have a lot of work to do if they want to dance.

16-5,8-2 and a win vs GW.1st place in A-10.I will take their résumé.Please, let's get real.It would have been easily a 15 point game in Kingston.

Giving K0,TA,TJ 30 plus minutes works for me. Now like to see ANO added to the 30+minute list; to see what happens ?

The URI resume is lacking (16-5 with an RPI in the mid 50's) but they definitely look like an NCAA team, and a dangerous one, at that.

Here are some unsolicited comments for your perusal, guys:

. Rhode Island had big, strong guards that took Kendall and Shawdre out of the game from the get-go. One reason that they drove to the hoop so much is because of Rhode Island's perimeter defense, which today reminded me of Butler and Connecticut, the way they played perimeter defense. Glad that our newest recruit is 6-3 and close to 200 pounds.

. Our press was fairly effective - so why do we wait until we are down double figures with less than six minutes to go before we employ it?

. Rhode Island wanted every rebound that came off the rim. They played Big Boy basketball inside. They are a well-coached team. Just checked the Buffalo website and found that Bobby Hurley has his team riding at 14-6 and 4-3 conference in only his second year. The old man taught these Hurleys how to coach.

. As many of you guys know, I sit in the first row at the end opposite the student section. The refs today were just horrible - the worst I have seen this year. There were a hundred ways that we could have won - but the refs and shoddy foul shooting haunted us all afternoon. We lost Alonzo on a foul that apparently caused a concussion and God knows what else, knocking him out of bounds, and we get no foul call. Our best shot blocker leaves the court and the zebras just go on sucking for the rest of the game.

. The players gave a good effort for the last six minutes of the game - hopefully they will learn to turn in on like that in the first half, so that we don't always go into the lockerroom down and then lose by only a few points.

. I can't get on the players much this afternoon - because Rhode Island was good, physical, opportunistic, and well-coached. Woulda/Shoulda/Coulda could drive us crazy thinking about how this game could have been different. On to Fordham...

Their big guy had 16 and 16 today. If Deion was in there to defend him, it failed. I would have rather seen Smithen and Jones play all of Deion's minutes today and gone small, conceding their interior points, which we seemed to do anyway. They could not have done worse.

The game was hard to watch. It had no flow because of all the fouls. Obviously rebounding really hurt us. Im sure Zo would have helped some in that area. It is amazing with this team that the games we lose seemingly always go the same way: we come out flat and fall behind by 10 or 15 points, play much better and cut the lead down to 1or 2, and then fail to close and lose by 2 to 5 points. Seriously, how many games this year have gone that way? Anyway, I thought JJ played well and I wish he would be more aggressive and look to score. TA had some tremendous post moves and was aggressive all game. He just could not get the shots to fall. I hope he continues his aggressive play because he will make those shots on most nights. Terrible officiating all game long on both sides. How can a ref stop a fast break to give URI and bench warning? All in all it was a disappointing loss. This team should win a game like this at home. We have to figure out how to close games out.

Stork, completely agree on the refs. I am in no way blaming the loss on them, because our play didn't deserve to win, but they were horrendous. A couple of the clear blatant errors that I saw.

1. The two who missed the blatant back court violation on URI. Granted the 3rd ref on the other side of the court saw it and called it but how do the two right in front of the play miss that.

2. They called 2 non shooting fouls on Kendall, when he was clearly in the act of shooting.

3. Unless SDJ said the magic word, which is possible, the technical was overkill.

4. Missed out of bounds call when URI player had the ball stepped on the end line, they called it out of bounds and then gave it to URI.

5. I saw both Kendall and Deion argue pretty vehemently calls. Those two guys never argue calls.

6. They missed a forearm shiver delivered by TJ to one of there guys going up for a dunk. That was in our favor but still blatant.

Just an all around crappy job by the officials. The old gray haired guy was the worst of the 3.

Wait...... they're 16-5, first place in the A10, and they have a lot of work to do; yet we are the greatest thing since sliced bread? You really do live in dreamland.

Agree with these, and also the warning on Hurley. Absurd. He needs to be warned not to stand on the court during the game?? And warned as we are in the midst of a fast break? To make matters worse, he was back on the court on the very next possession, and no technical.

The refs also waved off a bucket by Terry late in the game that should have been an and-one, and instead just gave him two FTs. It was a terrible call.

Nothing personal against Deion, but that was probably one of the worst individual performances I have ever seen. Fouled out, zero points, missed all 4 FT attempts, missed makeable shots on both of the plays when he was fouled, had at least one costly turnover that was unforced, took two terrible threes. It was painful to watch.
We all know we don't go deep on the bench, but he's getting way too many minutes (today an exception due to O's injury). Whether O is out for future game(s) or not, I think we've seen the minutes each player on the team is getting, and it's not going to change this season, as the season is nearly over.

DT will be a senior next year. I hope he returns to prior year form. However if he doesn't, and if he gets the same type of minutes as this year...well...something just "ain't" right.

X2.

I thought RI looked as impressive as any team in A10 as I've seen this year. Their aggressiveness was impressive. They were hungry & just destroyed us on the boards. How many points did they score right under the goal...geez? For those who don't think rebounding matters, well today showed why rebounding or lack of does matter.

The last week was just deflating, come off a huge win against our rival, league race wide open, and we dump the next 2 games. This week showed exactly where this team is ... A mid-pack, up and down squad.

Deion has gone scoreless 10 times this season. He has scored 4 points our less in 19 of our 23 games. He is shooting 8% from 3 and 52% from the line and averaging a paltry 3.5 rebounds per game for a guy his size averaging 23 minutes a game. His line today looks pretty similar to his season long stats.

Coach Fezz , my observations:

Great guard play especially from K Anthony, he's awesome. He drove it and floated multiple shots over Hassan, I have never seen that from anyone let alone someone 5'8 (maybe) lol. Your team has hearts of lions, was nervous until the end, a lot like Rhody, the game is not over till the last buzzer. Weakness was obvious, lack of rebounding, especially after your big guy was poked in the eye. Granted, even though Rhody is undersized by height, we are a very good rebounding team. Rarely see us get out worked on the boards, but was a glaring weakness for UR, no doubt why Rhody won. UR's defense was damn good, we had a good assist day, otherwise was great to watch two very good defensive teams battle till the end. I really think you caught us at the wrong time, we have a ton of young talent that's really coming together. Truth be told, I had no hope for a victory today, but was very impressed with Rhody's progress. I trolled here because it seemed you guys gave ZERO respect to our team, saying that we got fat on low level teams. Maybe, but our team is getting better every game and it's great to watch, and it'll only be better next year... Love your team though, hope you guys win out the rest of the season.

This is what it's come to. We are the ones with an experienced team of veterans and have now been passed in our own league by a team that is younger than us and has been worse than us most of the time that we've been in the A-10, and now we have to ask their fans to say something nice about our team to placate us in defeat.

Awesome.

I hate you the most here Eight Legger, everyone else is nice. As Late Great Eric The Actor used to say.... Bye for now.

God rest his tiny sole.

Frankly we should have reconsidered the red shirting before now. By playing the freshman we'd at least be building for next year.

I'd put the other Hurley brother on the list we can't talk about here.

Observations:
On offense we are consistently playing 3 on 5 as stat sheet clearly shows. This is the only game I understood DT minutes, given Zo's injury.

K0 is a warrior and while not perfect given his role, as in most games, where would we have been today without him? Going to miss watching him next year.

Re the refs, a very physical game lending itself to many calls and a few bad ones. Both teams shot the same number of free throws. Refs had nothing to do with this loss IMO. The lead ref today, Bryan Kersey, is a very high profile ref who does many of the Top 10 games, including yesterday 's UVA Louisville game.

Terry Allen played very hard today in a very physical game...great job!
More Kadeem!

The URI roster is impressive and looks like it will be for awhile. ( I know we have great kids).

Despite usual poor student attendance, crowd noise was pretty good. Noticed driving in the athletic fields were full and lots of students walking, jogging around campus on a nice day. FWIW.

Are we better than our record?

Continuing to pull for this mysterious team!!

Would like to add that Terry was a real force. If some of his shots had not rolled out, he might have scored 30 or more points. I hope that he continues to focus as he is really a great player and a great kid. Also, hopefully Zo will be back soon to help.

TA is a "go to guy". I love his aggressiveness. He wants the ball & wants to score. I'd like to see some of the others learn from his aggressiveness. TA has the skills to takeover a game.

Interesting in that Kendall, for his size seems to fearless & shares TA's aggressiveness.

We saw in RI a hardcore team that takes it to its oppenent. They outrebounded us by 15. Many of those resulted an 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities to score. I'd be curious for those who keep stats on us if they know how many times we've won in the past by being outrebounded by 15 or more.

This game was lost on the offensive boards. We gave up 16 and some of them were key rebounds at the end of the game when we were trying to make our routine comeback. I think they even got one off a missed free throw towards the end, which should rarely happen, and one time we pressed and even forced them to take a bad shot and could not come up with the rebound. All other stats were pretty even - with our lack of three point shooting also contributing. But that was something that Hurley mentioned after the game and I thought it spoke to what his strategy was - he said they wanted to keep us under 4 made 3's and under 25% - which they did. Meaning - he did not think our offense could make enough 2 pointers to beat them, and he was right. Throw in the offensive rebounds - and he was right.

And I think you saw two very contrasting styles of play and coaches as well yesterday which just made me wonder. Mooney - as we all know and have complained or raved about on this board, tends to try and recruit to his system and probably get under the radar guys who will develop over 4 years at UR. Hurley on the other hand - is more of a recruiter it seems like. Go out and get the best athlete and players possible, and let them loose. And he has the means to do it - having ties to his father's NJ powerhouse HS team - St. Anthony's and having coached a national HS team as well in NJ at a prep school. He has a pipeline for players. On a small scale - I almost look at him as the Calipari of the A10. He is going to try and beat you by outrecruiting you. Whether it be top HS players or transfers (think they have 3 on the team right now). And when he took over 3 years ago - URI was at the bottom of the A10, and now they are fighting for first place in the league and an NCAA bid all with underclassmen - their two best players are Sophs. and then the frosh Terrell is pretty good. So it will be interesting to see how they finish this year - if they can make the NCAA's and if Hurley is able to keep it going. And then of course - can URI keep him because once they make it to the NCAA - his name will be up for some big conference jobs.

Exactly, Trap. Hurley and URI have passed us in 2 or 3 years. He started with a disaster of a program four years ago, and we started with a Sweet 16 team. Now look at where we both are. Humbling to say the least.

Yesterday was the first time I have seen Hurley coach in person. It was easy to see why Rhode Island has risen from the ashes so quickly.

Hurley was involved in literally every play. He (and at least one of his assistants) were completely tuned in. He reacted and made adjustments (players, instructions, strategy) on nearly every possession. Particularly impressive was that Hurley's reactions were immediate and decisive. No overthinking, and no doubt in his mind as to what needed to be done. He felt the game, and his instincts were spot on.

I will grant that Hurley was theatric. He yelled, screamed, jumped, and ran for much of the game. But what makes this most interesting is that it was clear to an observer that every member of that team believed in Hurley, committed to his mission. There was no doubt that he had won over the minds, heart, and soul of the Rhode island players and coaches.

The toughness that Hurley showed was demonstrated by his team. It was crystal clear that Hurley knows how to be strong, influencing his team in the right way without harming their confidence. The fact that Rhode Island is winning close games and finding ways to close and win on the road is no accident. They may not have the most talent (it is likely more youth & inexperience), but they are getting the most from their Coach.

If Hurley stays around, Rhode Island is going to be a tough out for the foreseeable future.
