Opening Night Lineup - Just for fun

For people that have watched Richmond basketball for a long time, you sure have short memories. 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 rosters didn’t do anything either and neither did 2022-2023. Mooney can get the best out of players, it just takes too long to get there. Anyone who thought Richmond could “reload” is living in fantasy land. It just isn’t in the Mooney DNA. Everyone has hoped that adaptation was possible and any small sign was celebrated, but you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

That being said, obviously this year’s team is running below expectations as most of us were hoping for more portal magic, but the short transfer history shows it takes multiple years in the CM program for a player to shine. The only exception is Jordan King. Quinn did not light it up in 2022 and neither did Bigelow. Roche also didn’t meet expectations and then got bitten by the injury bug.

As others have said, it is a system thing and the system requires patience. Until the Spiders get a new coach, it is what it is.

I do think the Spiders will be able to play better and the players will show improvement. We also should know that the schedule is a reflection of the staff’s expectations. The schedule is always “adjusted”. How soon I forget.

agreed. I think the schedule (if intentionally weak) reflects the thinking that it might take some time, but we could be strong by January. we'll struggle through it early but beat bad teams. it's not about being battle tested as much as finding the "flow".

nobody expected this team to shoot 26% from 3 though.

It's all relative. Everybody else gets stronger too. Mooney changes nothing so other teams will be prepared. It's going to be a rough ride.

You know how every year Trap makes the same post about Moon shortening his rotation to 8 guys by league play?

Maybe it should be like 6 guys now. Amazingly, a starter with shooting splits of 21/20/50 is getting almost 30 minutes per game (and would be part of that 6 man rotation.)

I looked up his stats and to be honest was shocked he was shooting as high as 20 from three. At least he can defend like Dji. And pass and play make like Dji. And do all the intangible like Dji. Oh wait ???

Against LA Tech we were -17 with Walz on floor in 21 minutes. +11 with Beagle in 19 mins. Now Walz got subbed in & burned by 3 FTs at end that had nothing to do with him, but still that is a wild +/- for 2 guys splitting time at same position. Idk how that aligns with past games, hopefully it's not that disparate.

Also, our starting guards are both shooting 20% from 3 on the season. 4 for 20 & 6 for 30.

Amazing!

But not in a good way.

Neither of these guys was really seen as a 3 point shooter coming into the year. Dlo had a career best % as a 4th option last year and was at just 37% and now is a focus of defenses. While it seems Tyne is not a shooter at all. AP also in the 20s percentage wise and Beagle has shot 2 total threes this year.

So yeah, I do expect things to stay awful from 3 as teams begin to smother Roche and Dusan is only viable bench alternative.

Gonna be a long ride.

Yeah, the DLo regression was predictable. he was never a good outside shooter & his form wasn't that good either. he benefitted from being a complimentary option last year. To his credit he's stepping up scoring bc nobody else really can consistently but shouldn't be your go to guy without a shot. hard to be that small and no jumper and also be a go to guy but again his effort is 100% there.

I liked Tyne's frosh year & his potential but so far he's flatlined. Regardless, u can't have 20% from 3 even as a bad shooting guard. And we have 2.

What is (maybe) worse is we have 17 assists between both of them. 2 guys. in 7 games. from guards who play all game. 17 assists. I realize more of our assists run through the big man so they won't be as high. But if you're not shooting 3 ball, and not creating for others...umm. They bring some D and ball handling but it's not enough right now on this team.

Also, Tanner in 8 minutes was -9. I think he got burned by 1 or 2 FTs at end too. But this is becoming the norm and would validate the eye test that he's a sieve esp as the on ball defender.

Methinks it’s possible they’re making good passes that would be assists if the other players could shoot a lick, but we miss from a lot of guys.
