OOC 2018-2019

Host teams in Suncoast Classic are UR, Ole Miss, BC, and Wyoming. So will play two of those in Florida. Others in field are Niagara and Grambling. Two others haven't been named yet to round out field. So guess we will play two of the four.

Was Vermont one and done?

I maybe wrong, but thought Mooney said we were playing at Vermont next season.

BC home and away was part of the deal we made for when they cancelled our football game this past season. Pretty sure that means BC comes to Robins Center next season.

So at a minimum we seem to have 7 pretty challenging games on the schedule, which leaves room for 5 or 6 others. Let's hope we can answer the bell next year.

To summarize in one list:

at Vermont
Boston College
at Georgetown
Wake Forest
Old Dominion
2 Suncoast Classic games from (Ole Miss, BC, Wyoming)
SClassic campus games (Niagara, Grambling, 2 TBD)

at Bucknell?
at James Madison?

If true, still looking for 1-2 games?

It is very hard to predict how tough an OOC schedule will be, even when you know all the teams! According to the RPI we had the 22nd hardest OOC schedule this year, but just by looking at the names of the teams you would never realize it. Next year we may have a similarly difficult schedule, hopefully a little easier.

If we want to be a top basketball program we need to have a strong OOC schedule. Preferably with teams from top conferences and not just teams like VT with strong RPIs. If we ever make it to a better conference then we can play a week OOC schedule.

Maybe Bennett and Mooney worked out a deal last year to play at JPJ this OCC. 60 miles away.

Still can't find a shred of info on "Suncoast Classic" since the initial report, and now appears Ole Miss will play in Emerald Classic and Niagara will play in NIT instead... looking pretty dicey, hopefully this doesn't fall through as it would be tough to get in an exempt tournament this late and we have enough trouble filling the schedule already...

Yeah, seems like that thing must be dead. Rothstein didn't even mention where it was going to be played and there is zero info anywhere on the web about it except stuff that cites his tweet. Mooney would be smart to get us two easier games if he wants to coach beyond next year anyway.

JOC following the message board... can add Oral Roberts to the list -

Old Dominion, Wake Forest and Oral Roberts are scheduled to play at the Robins Center next season, and the Spiders will visit Georgetown, with some work still to be done on the men's basketball schedule.
Richmond, according to a report, will participate in the Suncoast Classic (Florida site to be determined) along with Boston College, Wyoming and other schools to come.

If this schedule holds true, it is pretty challenging. You have to beat some decent teams if you want to have any shot at an NCAA bid.

Well I'm moving to Florida in a couple months and I'm hoping that the tournament will be within driving distance so I can see our Spiders in action

Any news on where the tournament will be? Now that I'm in Florida I'm hoping I can make it down for the games.

I was going to say the same thing 97. A whole lot of nothing in that article.

Maybe to some on here, but in fairness to JOC, the average fan who does not spend every day in the off season either posting or worrying about Spider basketball probably got a lot out of the article.

VT4700 are you JOC’s son?? Lol. Kidding, I understand.

I'd expect our last few games to be 250+ rpi teams.
we scheduled too tough last year, and we have one senior again. we have too many tough games scheduled already.

I still have my doubts how we ended up with the 22nd toughest OOC schedule last year. Still not passing the eyeball test, unless all of college basketball was so crappy last year (WHICH MAY BE THE CASE!)

The computers tell us that...

Cincinnati
Vermont
Louisiana
ODU
Bucknell
BC
Jacksonville St
UAB
Wake Forest
Georgetown
Delaware
JMU

is tougher than...

Virginia
Michigan
Seton Hall
Texas
Marquette
ODU
Bucknell
Winthrop
California
North Florida
Grambling
App State
VMI

You're right, it doesn't pass the eyeball test. One tourney team vs 4 - including the #1 overall seed and the national runner-up.

the key is limiting the really weak games. Georgetown was our 3rd worst RPI game at 165.

VCU played #313, 250, 249, 218, and 216
