Official hot seat thread Mooney

Question. Lets say CM gets fired after this season, does he get another HC job in the near future?
Without a doubt - if he wants one. Think he moves down in leagues, but if an Ivy or Patriot league school opened up I can see him being a candidate. Air Force is back with Princeton roots with Joe Scott as head coach, so I could see Mooney teaming up with him as an assistant. Maybe even CAA opening or NEC opening. I think he gets a look - just depends on if he wants to do it anymore and be a head coach or assistant.

I do agree he would get a look at lower league schools. Would take a huge pay cut. I dont see him having any great level of success in the role though.

I don't know. I think he can pitch "I don't care what level your school can recruit at. You were 5-26 last season, I can get you to 16-15."

Local media won't cover how bad this has become (save Matt Josephs). No mention of UR struggles on 9am basketball hour of Big AL on Tuesday. And of course BB will not cover this situation. He'd rather criticize Tony Bennett for not playing faster!

The issue is that really no one cares about UR Basketball. We are irrelevant. The "new fans" are in the Robins Center because it's the cheapest event you can possibly do with a family of 4. It's cheap entertainment, minor league baseball style. Those "fans" are not really concerned about results, just like our athletic department.

New school would sell the fact that they are hiring the all time leader in wins from Richmond A10 with an overall winning record. He would take a pay cut, but everyone moving down expects that. But money shouldn't be an issue given all that UR had provided, but I don't see him settling for less than 500K. Still not a bad salary.

I think Patriot or Ivy league would be perfect, because almost all those schools are on same footing in terms of recruiting and admissions. And I think he could then really recruit to his system at that point.

But again - I think he stays on an expiring contract. Which is if the case, the question then needs to be - what does administration think he needs to do in the next 2 years to get extended? Cause we surely will be worse from a record standpoint - so does the bar lower and if he over-achieves next year and wins 18-19 games, does that get him a short extension. Or do they move to NCAA or bust territory, and just let the deal expire if no NCAA appearances.

To the point above, it really is cheap. I recently acquired 11 total tickets for our last 2 games for grand total of $29.

This has pretty much become the situation. I saw Sullymygoodname twitter (Dayton podcaster) making the case that Mooney probably would have made it to ncaa two years ago, and who else are we going to get. OMG. This guy used to be very understanding of our plight, but now he seems resigned that we are once in a ten year get lucky type of program. We see the other tweet above, media and A10 think of us as that little team that cannot. Its crazy. And yes, Sully could be right, with Hardt in charge I fear the next hire. But, still better option than Moon. Would rather bring in a guy to win 8 games two years in a row, get rid of PQ and Hardt, and start clean then this purgatory of a basketball program.

Without any regular media critique of the program, this is the only place Mooney faces any real criticism. And the powers that be can simply write it off as “irrational message board people.”

Yes, and it does not help that Mooney has no ownership, as shown in the interview posted. SDSU has a pretty lax / pom pom media contingent covering the Aztecs. But Dutcher gives a damn. The one year he missed the NCAA he talked about how it was not good enough, he had to be better, coach better, recruit better. If they miss this year guarantee he will have the same message. Mooney - eh I'll cash my checks and show up next year and cash them again. But yes, the combination of Richmond media being low key and accommodating feeds right into Mooney's lack of ownership.

Like a hand slides into a snug glove, they go together. JOC just did a whole article on how much positive exposure UR gets from playing in the Friday night showcase games, with quotes from Mooney about good it is for our program. Left unsaid, of course, it is late February and out last Friday night showcase came, we got blown out and the last 2 Friday night games are completely meaningless with zero post season implications for us.

One thing I think that is not helping us is William and Mary firing shaver a few years ago and now they’re 5-25 and have been a mess since he was fired. You better believe that our leadership sees a peer school like William and Mary going through what they are and don’t want any part of that. That’s where the “mooney is the best we can do” crowd comes from.

I bet they fire the 5 and 25 guy before we fire Mooney.

I heard on the radio yesterday they're selling seats for Dayton game next week for as low as $5.00.

I read that article. The fluff stuff from the article is obviously more important than the meat & potatoes you brought out.

Apples and oranges my friend

Who is this crowd? The "mooney is the best we can do." Has anyone actually said that? No one on here has said that.

It makes no sense especially given 3/4 of the coaches preceding Mooney did better than him. But actually I have heard that b4 and on the board too, but it's probably been a while & obviously a small %. Think 712 has a point.

How often do you say that?

should probably fire him today after losing 62-28 to 8-20 Northeastern last night.

I don't think that's a typo. 28!
Yeah, saw that last night...crazy. At least their sports information people have a sense of humor about it:

Also noticed our Hofstra friends also got blown at home by 26 by a terrible Elon squad.

$5 dollar seats. Having super senior night on the 2nd last home game because its a friday night compared to a Tuesday night because more fans might show up. Just add these to the list of things that show we are not a good program right now.

Overall - I think the Spiders win tonight. I think they win 1 of the last 2 - Dayton/Bonnies - so we enter the A10 tourney 20-11, and we win at least 1 game in the A10 tourney.

I just don't see the school doing anything to get rid of the all time leader in wins at our school after a 21-12 season. And depending on how teams handle the NIT - we might even sneak into that if teams opt to play because of COVID, money, etc.

People have definitely echoed this point. Have heard the “Richmond is a very hard school to win at and Mooney is doing an outstanding job, be careful what you wish for” excuse many times. There is a segment of Richmond fans that think like this and pretty sure it’s the view of the administration itself. Pretty dumb given they have the ability to make Richmond easier to win at and see if a different coach will work out.

I was a big proponent of W&M firing Shaver because it showed that they cared about exceeding the status quo. It didn't work out, but that doesn't mean it was the wrong decision. They still haven't made the tournament and they wouldn't have made it with Shaver there, either. Right decision, wrong execution, in retrospect. At least they had the guts to do it. I know they ran their AD out for other reasons, but I give her credit for the attempt.

Meanwhile, we are afraid to change anything after two decades because of fear. It's such a small-minded approach from a school that quite literally preaches (and teaches) the opposite in the classroom. Truly unbelievable.
