ODU

Poor outside shooting in the first half (I thought ODU defense was better in the 2nd) and some suspect officiating almost cost us. Nice to see them stay strong on the road and not fold when it got close.

Whew. A win
could just be everyone had a poor shooting night but I still think we’re going to struggle against long athletic guards

Grant, Francis, free throws...............no surprise in the tightness of the score and game ....................glad we were able to eke out a win - as far as refs - looked like when Grant pulled down the rebound that was eventually stolen that he was pushed by one player before another player stole the ball and laid it in................... now academic since we won, but a puzzling non call.?.................10-1 is a rocking record............Go Spiders!

Golden has taken very few threes this year - but that last shot was the game changer....................thought he was looking to see if someone else was open but deciding to take the shot was the best option.................and nothing but net was sweet!

Let us never speak of that game again.
meh, it was a win against a team we should’ve beat. It showed how resilient we are. This team willed its way to a dub, so let’s speak about this game often. We didn’t have our best game, but we fought hard and won.

Sometimes you play elegant basketball, Queensberry rules, Mooney's preference. Sometimes you have to wrestle the pig. The latter tonight, but a win nonetheless.

Encouraged and impressed by the will to win, the grit, the Spiders showed tonight. Bodes well for the season..

We won but I don't understand the accolades about it on here. This game should never have been in question. We went nearly 8 minutes without a bucket. The team played pretty poorly throughout and IMO it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. It shows that we can go cold and if we do against a decent team especially on the road we will likely lose.

Lots of teams in CB can go cold (See: losses by Duke and Kentucky to bad teams). We found a way to win when we had an off night. That’s a mark of a good team.

I am mildly concerned for our future road games, since we haven’t exactly lit the world on fire in the two we’ve had against terrible teams. Good news is that the crowd at Alabama probably won’t be much better than it was in the NIT a few years back. Win that one any way we can and it should help us gain confidence for league road games.

Fatherspider, to have an off night bodes very well for us. The last several years, we would have lost this game. Great game!!
Yes we would have but we aren't just trying to improve on last year... we'd like this to be a special season. It was not a great game IMO. Yea we won but in conference play against a decent team or away against Alabama we don't win, and I think the players and coaches believe that as well. Need to be better and I think there is a good chance we will be.

Can we not have an off night every now and then, and still win? In second half Sherod,
Francis and Golden made key baskets at different times to keep lead. I like the fact Golden
had a ball go in and out, with less than a minute and last year the opponent would have come down
scored and we lost. Instead we play good D, come down run our offense and score, win game.

You don't know how Alabama will play either. I said in several years!! That is why we play OOC games, they prepare us for conference games. These type of games gives us something to draw upon.

I think all father was saying was last night was not our best showing, but we won. If we want to continue to win we will have to play better. I don't think most would disagree with that.

One more thing about last night's game. There's definitely a clear top 6 Mooney has settled on to play the heavy minutes in these tight games.

Sal, Tyler, Matt and Jake give us solid bench options and were given a handful of minutes last night. But Mooney has decided who he trusts and I think barring foul trouble or injuries we can expect to see these top 6 get nearly all the minutes in most close games going forward.

We are saying the same thing then....No problem....my comment comes from my experience as a coach..

Yes, Grant grabbed a nice rebound off of an excellent block that he made. I thought the foul was a hold on Dickens who reached in and and grabbed Grant's arm preventing him from passing the ball.

Then a little bump (probably not enough for a foul), a clean steal and dunk by Curry. They missed the foul on Dickens but it wasn't a very forceful hold. I would like to see Grant be stronger in that situation and rip and pivot away with the ball. Instead he just kind of stood there vulnerable looking for the call. If he does that he probably gets the call or at least maintains possession. Because expected a call, he got a little lazy and it cost him. Learn and move on.

Call it whatever you want - ugly win, playing to level of competition, gritty and tough, toughness, etc. It all doesn't matter at this point. When you are coming off two terrible seasons - you don't complain when your winning. I will take 20 ugly wins if it gets UR back to the NCAA tourney.
Unlike college football - you don't get style points with the committee. A win is a win on your resume. They don't look to see did you win by 1 or 100.

Many of the models used by the committee take winning and losing margin into account. So in fact, the committee does look to see if you win by 1 or 100, at least partially if not outright.

we're a good shooting team that didn't shoot well. other than missing shots, we didn't play poorly other than a few too many turnovers. defense was pretty sound. rebounding was fine. Grant was tough inside. just some really good shooters missed open looks.
I'll take the win and move on.

With the new addition, Oliver, I think ODU will improve their season and become a better win
