My sources...

I don't really care about W&M one way or another, I just feel bad for the fans there who actually want to win something. The school and some supporters can't seem to get out of their own way. It would be nice to have a real rivalry with them in some key sports again, because for the most part they are the best fit for us overall (and not a bunch of jackoffs like some other state schools).

I guess the same recent history is the one where the two basketball teams haven’t played since 2014 and the last 4 football results are all tied 2-2.

Do I think that UR would lose in basketball if they played this year - no. If they had played over the last four years could see a 2-2 split possibility like football - yes.

Like it or not, the schools have similar results in recent years. The biggest historical difference is NCAA basketball tournament appearances, but as you love to point out, Mooney hasn’t gotten the team there since 2011. Recent history?

I love these regional type rivalries. What I don’t like is a superiority complex with no basis when viewed head-to-head.

W&M cutting 7 sports was a terrible, shortsighted decision. What the alums of that school and those programs are doing should be celebrated. You could only hope former UR athletes would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

By the way, do I want UR to get to the NCAAs this year - YES. Go Spiders!

I guess you can go back how ever long you want and use those numbers to make an argument, but when I think of recent history with W&M, I look at the fact we have beaten them the last 5 times we played them in basketball, and are 7-2 against them the last 9 football games. So, a combined 12-2 against them tells me we have definitely had the upper hand.

I don't think W&M cutting sports was a terrible decision. They had 23 sports before cutting them, which was more than any other CAA school, despite having the smallest enrollment. As a result of having 23 sports, they had to support 38% more student athletes than the other CAA schools. It was known for awhile that some sports would have to be cut, but I think the big issue was how they went about cutting them.

Accordingly, the university is reinstating Women's Gymnastics, Women's Swimming and Women's Volleyball, which will continue as Division I varsity sports. The university wants those teams to thrive and will treat them equitably with other varsity teams at the university. By reinstating these sports, William & Mary will make significant progress toward achieving equity in participation in 2021-22. Completing that progress will require reduction in the men's program via roster management and retaining the current cuts to the men's teams, or a swift and significant increase in participation opportunities for women, or both.

David Teel really tears apart the W&M admin here. W&M may be starting a Presidential search soon too. JOC has certainly broken many UR stories and helped bring the Bill Cooper/UR football fiasco to light but I never recall this type of tone. Though JOC is a beat reporter and Teel may be a columnist for RTD I don't know, he was formerly one for the Daily Press.

Teal was a steal for the RTD. One of the few bright spots in a otherwise terrible newspaper. He’s also spot on in his assesment.

Missed this one from last week...Michigan State cutting men's and women's swimming.

And another one...Fresno State dropping men's tennis, wrestling, and women's lax.

Clemson cuts men's T&F and XC.

Meanwhile, W&M has restored its cut men's sports for one more year while they try to figure out if they can save them. It would require adding a couple more women's sports and a big step up in fundraising.

Interesting one here....San Diego State cutting women's rowing for a combination of COVID financial and gender equity reasons. Pretty rare to see a women's sport get cut under gender equity.

Interesting read.

I remember reading the book "Death to the BCS" about 10 years ago and it laid out perfectly how collegiate athletics isn't able to sustain this model. The writing was on the wall years ago about the overspending in college athletics. Often, colleges find themselves in an arms and or rat race, pouring more and more money into resources that take away from other capital projects on campus and sky rocketing the cost of college as a result. The current system simply isn't built to sustain the exponential spending with the dwindling TV dollars. JMU is going to be an excellent case study going forward with as much money as they put into athletics and using student fees to subsidize it while dropping other sports and probably never getting at a much higher level than they are now. 88 million for a new arena plus all the football upgrades all cost a pretty penny. Essentially we are all paying more to lose as P5 schools take more of the pie. Add in smart phones and instant gratification and you will find it that people under the age of 50 want to do more in 3-5 hours than go to a football game or a couple of hours at a basketball game. To be fair I think the game is more popular than its ever been, its just different at how its followed and absorbed.

UVA laying off athletics staffers. While John Hardt is not loaded with charisma, he probably deserves some credit for maintaining staffing levels in the AD while there has been no athletics revenue. Will be interesting to see what next FY brings.

Omar would be great there. Selfishly I hope not because it could possibly take him away from being a future candidate here. There are 2 rockstar Spider alums who r sitting ADs that would succeed big time here. Simon Gray and Omar Banks.

And we're stuck with pretentious John Hardt who makes multi million dollar errors.
