Mens - VCU @ RC - Tuesday 2/25 7pm CBS Sports Network (Red-out I think)

Thanks for taking one for the team Gkiller. Good stuff. I remember Tarrant's radio show, actually called in a couple times. As bad as he may be 80s fan, het took calls, and gave straight scoop - did not hide like Moon.

Crazy crazy moon talk, hard to win b/c we had won before????? Like you said Gkiller, doesn't seem to affect VCU. That is the kind of BS that just infuriates me about moon. You think Bennett (at St. Mary's) or any good coach has that attitude. Wow, that is truly damning and an indictment on his ability to lead. Wow.

Moon never saw an excuse he didn't like

Right, I would take VCU or nothing. But agree with sman, somehow we would back door cover (maybe Ryan Odom's son tells him to take it easy on his teammate's dad :):):)).
Orr VCUs bus breaks down enroute and they cannot get ubers.

Late last night I wanted to lose some brain cells so l did something I hadn’t done in longest time…listened to Mooney’s radio show. At least it was a recording & could fast forward thru commercials & intros. Thought I’d see our approach to VCU rivalry game from the WORST rivalry coach of ALL Time…that was silly….we got about 3 minutes from Philly Bob & Moon on game.

But a few mildly interesting nuggets. B Artis was guest. My takeaways…

B Artis did a nice job. He said Richmond was best offer by far in portal. Knew us as “smart, rich school” Said our style of play much different & nothing like he’s played b4. & he was playing too robotic. Had to laugh at last one. Everything we’ve witnessed by many guys playing so robotic during moon era. Even moon said O was “sophisticated” & takes multi years to be comfortable. I don’t see us taking many 1 year guys in future.

Moon actually said they removed bad wainwright guys from team when he first got here. Wanted good guys. Not sure those guys were coming back anyway. Still interesting. Don’t think I’ve ever heard it said like that. Felt like a Moon slip up.

Mooney actually said 1 reason the @ vcu game was going to be harder to win was because we won game year b4. ok Moon. LMAO. Idk if a game year b4 makes a big difference, but why does this never hurt VCU?? They stack wins. We never do. We r going on 9-27 under Moon. Well it should be 10-26 since tonight should be easier to win now. Doubly so since we got blown out.

The 1 & only question Philly Bob teed up came apparently from producer Matt Josephs. Generic question on if Moon likes games to be called tight or not from the refs. Come on. Vcu game & use some generic ? from employee. It’s a joke. Earlier in show Philly Bob acted like there r text questions etc to get to. So either they were ignored or we really had none from fans b4 a rivalry game, which is even worse.
Mooney made a similar comment about Beagle after last game. How tough it is to learn our system and Beagle was basically getting in his own head out there, thinking too much. I mean for the love of all, this is basketball, we are not teaching nuclear physics here, if your system is that tough to be picked up quickly by D-1 basketball players, maybe your system needs revised.

Also, we all know, Mooney system has some notable areas where it goes against all basketball instincts for example:

1. Complete abdication of going after offensive rebounds, a shot goes up, you need to turn and tuck tail. Takes all of the natural instincts taught to every player since their youth (be aggressive).
2. The constant switching on defense takes a lot of mental bandwidth, plus it constantly is putting your small guards on big men and likewise your big men on small guards. Positions these players are never in any other situation because why in the f*ck would you put them in that position.
3. Having our center stand at the 3 point line with his back to the basket on offense as part of our offensive set. Walz has been here nearly 3 years and he is finally figured out how to effectively work from this completely unnatural position.

Those are just a couple examples off the top of my head. I don't understand how Queally/Hardt can watch us play and watch any other decent basketball team play and say what we are doing is the magic sauce.

wow. very controversial un-Mooney-like comment.

mind boggling. we've watched this offense for so long we could all run it in our sleep. these are smart kids we attract. they come to campus June 1 and spend almost 5 months learning our system before the 1st game. we're now 4 months into the seasone. it can't be that freaking hard. it just can't be.

The first game was no fluke, VCU is better than us in every single facet and and at every single position on the floor. We look like JV squad scrimmaging the varsity. Additionally, they are super aggressive on both ends of the floor, crash the boards relentlessly, and their guards can shoot right over our guards.

I question how much of a home court advantage we will have tomorrow as well. Students have yet to show up for a single game and be honest is anyone remotely excited about us getting our a**es handed to us again. I'm not.

VCU is in the hunt for an at large and the NET rewards blowouts so I don't expect them to step off the gas either.
This could be a bad look overall. Tickets still available for the game, which will likely be taken by VCU fans and students. Doubt our students will show up, and with a national TV game on CBS - this could be a bad outcome from the game - we lose by 20+ and from a fan standpoint, just looks more like a VCU Home game than UR home game.

yet it's said constantly by players. just last year it was Noyes. Now B Artis and Beagle. goes back for 20 years tho. so many examples.

yep. Now he didn't badmouth anyone and he didn't say "Wainwright" by name of course. But it was clearly Ol' Jer guys, that is who he replaced in his 1st year after all. And it was Jerry guys that didn't return....Merritt, Sandoval, Nelson, Mayes.

Easy answer is referring to Merritt who got in trouble (alleged assault?) that spring, unless that took place prior to Moon hire I don't remember. But again I didn't see Merritt coming back to play for Moon if Daon was Mother Teresa. think Sandoval & Nelson had academic issues & fall in same category.

The context was they want the right guys for Richmond culture and B Artis was deemed a good guy. He didn't elaborate it was relatively quick point he made, but Moon definitely said they didn't want guys back who weren't like that when he started.

and I'm not saying he wasn't right to do it, just that I agree it was an un-Mooney-like comment. Which is why I thought kind of a slip up.

Right. It would be one thing if doing all these things resulted in consistent 20+-game winning seasons and multiple A10 titles and NCAA appearances. Instead, it results in a losing season half the time for 8 years (likely 20+ losses 3x in that period).

I'll watch from afar and hope for the unexpected, but if we lose a laugher in front of a yellow crowd ... that will make quite a statement about the state of the program.
Yes, I am most interested tonight in the crowd. Is it a pro VCU crowd because our fans are just done with the season? Do the students show up? As you noted both could make pretty profound statements on the program in front of a national TV audience

& if u go complete sample of 20 years, he's .500 or less a full 40% of the time.

where/when did he say this?

I have little doubt that there will be a very significant number of Ram fans. The only thing keeping them away is they don’t like the traffic when leaving the RC since there are limited exits.

It is a “rivalry” game, but that really only pertains to the alums and local fanbases as more and more players aren’t in the program long enough to care. Plus, the way Mooney treats the game and his lack of winning against them tempers any enthusiasm.

When you have season ticket holders (myself included) considering skipping the game, you know there is a BIG problem. I’ll be there anyway, but it may be hard to force myself to stay until the end if the Spiders get off to yet another slow start. It might make a statement if there is a mass exit by red clad fans at halftime, but I doubt such a sign would even be acknowledged by the AD.

Definitely a new low for me and my interest level.

If they have put up with 20 seasons of what we’ve seen and where we are, I doubt people exiting the stands matters. One can discuss $ and optics, but the fact that we’re having this discussion 20 years in and moving forward in a new recruiting environment tells me nothing changes.

radio show last night. check post #39 in this thread.
I am a glutton for punishment and listen to the show the majority of the time mainly to get a different perspective on the players.

I didn’t have any alarm bells going off as Mooney spoke like you did @GKiller, but I can’t say I was being overly attentive either. I guess this must have been when Mooney was talking about having all “good guys” on the team in the context of off the court. Of course, as you mentioned he said that White met that criteria.

How many schools in the A-10 do not have good guys on their team right now would be my follow up? I mean kudos to him for not recruiting guys who have legal issues, seems like a mighty low bar to me, but I guess when you are one of the worst teams in the country, this passes for a bar you can exceed. I bet they are also hard workers and good students too. Yay, great participation trophy he is giving himself there.

no alarm bells either but I just found interesting that it was said. yes, it was within that exact discussion overall and I can see how missed. I listened to archive version it's out there to listen.

Jose Garcia was another. He took May term here even. look that's his job it's all good he's in charge of roster, but spare us with the constant good guy schtick. I thought Wainwright was schtick, Mooney has turned into it. Moon u didn't invent good guys, we've had a long line of them for decades prior. It's cultural to Richmond.

4700 would always say Moon doesn't throw guys under the bus...maybe not...but he had no problem throwing a whole bunch of Jerry players under it. And Jerry was a bit of a dick to Mooney so I get no warm feelings there.

But I guess when we lose again...likely by a LOT...to all the sexually deviant and money laundering druggies on VCU's team...we can say hey we're doing in the right try hard way. And Ryan Odom he must have skeletons in his closet and must actually be a terrible guy to not have good guys too.

Last week had lunch with a retired HS Coach, one of most successful in state, A fellow Richmond grad. We had talked in general about Richmond basketball, so I asked his thoughts on Mooney. He said he didn't like some of things he did (no detail), but felt he was a perfect fit for school, bright, good image, good kids that grauated and did well in class also. I responded, I agreed, but felt that was minimum, mentioned the week before whem all deans list athletes came to floor, looked to be over 100, and went on, I could not recall last time one of our coaches or athletes had gotten in trouble, so I viewed his test as floor not a bar. He responded you make valid points

Anyone know what this could mean? Another injury?

Maybe it's not us. Maybe it is EYEBROWS on VCU? and a safety issue for the Robins Center! can't have VCU families starting fights.

spiders4ever u seemed to have some insight can u help who is eyebrows?

Actually Eyebrows playing might be only way we can win tonight. fans getting under VCU skin. yes more likely we'll be rattled at Home by opposing fans but worth a try.

The jaynel stuff helped last year. main reason we won. just looking for any advantage. we certainly can't rely on Moon coaching, understanding of rules, and his robust 9-26 record.

Shulga is eyebrows.

Shulga is eyebrows.

don't see anything wrong with them. But checking with Philly Bob. He is a better judge and said Ungerer had a face for radio.

So Russell family fought in the stands over Shulga? Ok respect. Tho I feel like eyebrows is a made up old wives tale story.

Will we try anything different tonight? We saw what happened when we tried our normal rotation and strategy last time - they showed us what a chasm there is between our two programs right now.

How about throwing in some full court press? Crash the boards? Play 5 guards? Play 2 or even 3 bigs? Play hack-a-Shaq with their bigs (who mostly shoot free throws sub-50%)? Anything to change it up!

Or will we go with our standard plan, pray that we make 3's way above our season average and lightning strikes to give us a win?

I have my guess...

Like I said. My prediction is students will show up but will not be as engaged because we will get blown out by VCU early. Sadly, I think this game will become a defacto VCU home game. Hope I’m wrong, but that is my premonition.

Going with the 20 year standard operating procedure. If it doesn’t work, why fix it?

Are students getting free t-shirts or pizza?
