Moon strategy. Must be logical? When I saw that, I couldn't believe such a mismatch.Schertz and Avila are currently cracking up on the team bus headed to the airport that Mooney primarily had 5'7 White who weighs 1/2 of Avila on him most of the game.

I can’t think of any games where that happened to the Spiders twice, let alone within the same half. Finding new ways to lose. Can't believe how many times we stepped out of bounds in the final minutes.
It was laughable. Run the exact same defensive play after the TO. I guess that was to see what an adjustment looks like. /sMooney is such a bad end of game coach. He got schooled by SLU coach.
I’m still struggling to figure out what our defensive strategy is. It’s no longer a straight man defense. Switching man?Schertz and Avila are currently cracking up on the team bus headed to the airport that Mooney primarily had 5'7 White who weighs 1/2 of Avila on him most of the game.
Dusan and AP definitely brought some much needed energy and nice plays. Even Beagle got into the act.Love the energy right now. Dusan refusing to be denied, AP making great plays on both ends.
Let’s see if we can get enough stops to win this one. SLU really helping us out missing all those FT’s.
The early “interest” by the students quickly dwindled. I don’t think any of them stood up for anything even when the Spiders rallied and could have used some extra support. @Section9.RowD you are going to have to give some classes on school spirit.Hallock sitting on front row of students section - around 20 students here 20 minute before game time
Tyne got bulldozed in first half and so White got to play to show what he could do. Surprisingly, he was also pushed around and scored on.Schertz and Avila are currently cracking up on the team bus headed to the airport that Mooney primarily had 5'7 White who weighs 1/2 of Avila on him most of the game.
The main thing I learned is that STL is not very impressive. They are much better than last year of course and I expect Schertz will get them back into the top tier. However, this year I can see why VCU schooled them. As poor as the Spider play is this year, they should have won this game which surprised me.I had zero expectations of winning this thing going into it but we had played well enough and kept it close enough in the second half to give me that (false) hope that maybe we could pull it off after all. Sloppy play after sloppy play to close it out after going up what 7 or 8 very late? Defeat from the jaws of victory, that’s the Moonie way. I am so tired of this shit.
Yes - while the student section did end up being relatively full, pretty sad to see all students sitting during two sets of free throws by SLU in the last minute .. felt bad for Delonnie who did his part to try to get the crowd more into it but alas. The early “interest” by the students quickly dwindled. Vintage Mooney, up 6 with 3 minutes left, automatic loss. It's like clockwork. Amazing.
Up 1, he puts his point guard on the 6'10" guy to blow the lead, then draws up a play that forces his ballhandler to step out of bounds. Coach for Life!
Agreed, the last 5 minutes we had a lot of unforced errors. Not Mooney's fault for having players step out bounds. As for Dusan forcing things, that is kind of our offense now and that is on Mooney. He continues to run his same ole offense designed to get open shooters, except he doesn't seem to realize that we have a bunch of awful shooters. Think we are 330 or something in 3 point percentage but top 50 or so in number of 3's taken. So, then are left with players then just trying to take it the rack as our only alternative.I took a day off. In my day off, I watched some of Michigan St. vs Illinois, and some of the UR women on TV. Michigan State, they hedge every single screen until the guy guarding the ball can get back into position, and the other three defenders sag a little to try and prevent the dump to the screener who is now rolling. They are clearly drilled in it, and they pretty much always prevent layups. They do, however, give up an occasional open three if the guy with the ball is a good passer.
The UR women are very well drilled in going "under" screens. The woman who is guarding the picker drops off to let the woman who is guarding the ballhandler slip through the screen (underneath). So we are almost always still in position and never really give up the edge to the ballhandler, sending us into scramble mode. Of course the drawback is the ballhandler can stop and shoot as the woman goes under the screen. I wouldn't employ that against Caitlin Clark, but I think there's probably enough evidence to employ that as a strategy in the women's game.
I just don't think we have a team capable of doing either thing well. So we switch everything because it is easier to comprehend. And we are back to the days of Kendall Anthony on centers and such. Last year's team was really good about being aware when King or Hunt was on a big man, and Harris or Bigelow or Dji would switch off ball to get to a slightly better matchup, but this year's team simply isn't aware enough to do it.
Last thing -- I know it isn't in fashion to blame anything but Mooney, but in the last 5 minutes, I saw AP step out of bounds twice, for no reason, Dusan force two horrible driving layups for no reason, then miss a bunny, Beagle miss a bunny, and White take a terrible long two off the dribble. I don't think any of those were "coached". Those were on the players.
The defense, that's on the coach.
