I took a day off. In my day off, I watched some of Michigan St. vs Illinois, and some of the UR women on TV. Michigan State, they hedge every single screen until the guy guarding the ball can get back into position, and the other three defenders sag a little to try and prevent the dump to the screener who is now rolling. They are clearly drilled in it, and they pretty much always prevent layups. They do, however, give up an occasional open three if the guy with the ball is a good passer.
The UR women are very well drilled in going "under" screens. The woman who is guarding the picker drops off to let the woman who is guarding the ballhandler slip through the screen (underneath). So we are almost always still in position and never really give up the edge to the ballhandler, sending us into scramble mode. Of course the drawback is the ballhandler can stop and shoot as the woman goes under the screen. I wouldn't employ that against Caitlin Clark, but I think there's probably enough evidence to employ that as a strategy in the women's game.
I just don't think we have a team capable of doing either thing well. So we switch everything because it is easier to comprehend. And we are back to the days of Kendall Anthony on centers and such. Last year's team was really good about being aware when King or Hunt was on a big man, and Harris or Bigelow or Dji would switch off ball to get to a slightly better matchup, but this year's team simply isn't aware enough to do it.
Last thing -- I know it isn't in fashion to blame anything but Mooney, but in the last 5 minutes, I saw AP step out of bounds twice, for no reason, Dusan force two horrible driving layups for no reason, then miss a bunny, Beagle miss a bunny, and White take a terrible long two off the dribble. I don't think any of those were "coached". Those were on the players.
The defense, that's on the coach.
