Mens: NET '24-'25 Rankings

ncaa tournament is the goal. well actual wins in the tournament.
but last year was a fun season to me. as was 21-22 and 19-20.
if I couldn't enjoy seasons like those, I'd have to rethink my hobby.
I enjoyed 2/3 of last year. There was a nice stretch of games that were fun.
I certainly felt frustration in my 5th row seat behind the bench at Barclays as we flamed out of the A10 tournament. That was not fun. Beers are $17 each there. Two double digit leads gone.
Ultimately a season can be fun, but it doesn't make it successful in the big picture if you aspire to NCAA appearances (or NCAA wins, as you state.). This is where the Moon-jockeys come to rest, that all this winning - every other season in a time period of their choosing - is so great that NCAA appearances/wins are not even needed. It's gaslighting of actual program ambition. You have it, you stated it. They just don't agree that NCAAs and winning there is what defines a successful program because their guy doesn't do much of it.

Winning NCAA tournament games is much more fun than last season's co-A10 championship.

I hope you're not taking credit for creating the term "cake eater".

ha. relax sman. don't think I insinuated creation. no, I'm only taking credit for bringing it to the board! the best material is stolen. & we can admit the term fits.

So....what's the take on how NIL affects a coach's tenure? Do those contributing to NIL have more of a "stake" in the sports program than previously even considering the similiar equivalence to gifts to a school's sports funding before NIL. Is there a substaintial difference? Recognize gifts are used differently by paying players directly but effect on coach has some equilivance. And easy to give "cake eaters" terminology "props" as very descriptive...................
NIL contributions seem similar to investments...the donors are investing in our basketball program...most investors expect a satisfactory return on their investment...in college basketball I'd expect that return to be regularly battling for a conference Championship and at least occasionally earning NCAA At-Large bids...if the investment fails to deliver the expected return, the manager (Coach Mooney in this case) is usually held accountable for the lack of return...the investors have a choice if the return is not meeting their expectations...attempt to hold the manager accountable and demand a turnaround plan, or stop making further investments...

It seems to me the NIL era could significantly effect a coaches tenure. If the University values the NIL's contribution to success, and the coaching staff's failures cause NIL contributions to diminish that should create pressure on the coach to deliver results.

If this season continues to be underwhelming and is followed by more of the same, it'll be interesting to see how the NIL performs and whether, or not, it does effect the tenure of the coach...

I think all of that is true... At a normal university. Here at Richmond, most of the people who are giving big bucks are already on Mooney's side more than they are on the side of wanting desperately to win every year. So we could go 4-28 this year and none of them are going to be calling for his job. They might reduce their donations next year, if anything.

the NIL "investment" has to be looked at in the aggregate.
say a donor gives $100,000 to the Fordham NIL. while he may expect a better team based on his "investment", if the team's total NIL ranks 15th in the league ... that donor's going to be disappointed with the season.

we don't know NIL details, but any team consistently in the top 4 total NIL in any league should expect a lot from their team ... though only one team can win the league and it may not be the top NIL team.

I expect we're very top heavy and shallow in our NIL base. I know a Dayton grad who says all his friends give to their NIL.

Agree. but it's really not a big gamble. Of course there is no guarantee & we could make a bad hire, but that's a much lower probablilty. 3 out of the 4 prior coaches at UR had better results than Mooney. the argument saying gosh who could we get to replace Mooney I find the most absurd.
Oh I know it’s not a big gamble at all. Plenty of other quality, ethical, nice guy coaches available.

But that’s the mindset to be overcome, that we can do better but we also might not do better and/or we could end up with a whiskey drinking, tail chasing, knife wielding miscreant instead.

It’s not gonna happen.

So, a coach who won an A-10 tourney title and a dance game in 22 and an A-10 regular season title in 24 should not get an extension? And, despite the numerous conference titles and success several of our sports programs have had since he got here, you feel taking yet another jab at Hardt is justified too?
There is no such thing as regular season Champions and how can that even be claimed when the team tied for best regular season record. If I remember correctly, Mooney’s team lost the last game to a poor team to not be able to claim the sole best record. Then proceeded to lose the next two games to complete the meltdown.
STOP IT WITH REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS CRAP. Its nonsense just to boost Mooney’s mediocre stats.

I always enjoy a good SRS thread.

As a sidebar, I get why certain fans largely don’t show here when things are down but I think they concede the moral high ground as the true fans when they do.

Gotta take the bad with the good.
I think most on here would aacknowledge the University and Atheltic Deoartment do much very well, the question, are we being "the best we can be".

One bright spot, we get Fordham & Duquesne at home…

CM decided to completely take this year off. Hey he deserves it. Tough to make 3 Mil a year to coach young men basketball. Last years amazing accomplishments allow him at least 2 years off from caring about winning games. He has won enough for a while. One semi successful season every 3 or 4 years should be the expectation at Little Ol UR. Anyone expecting more should root for VCU.
