March Madness: Spiders v. UCLA

Betts is one-dimensional, but she is good. Really thankful to the women for this season, it was great!
Agree. At 6’7” and against shorter players all she has to do is hang out under the goal and pour in baskets. Unfortunately for us, Betts did her job.

Betts was just too much for us. Let's stay away from personal insults on her, that is unbecoming. We wouldn't like it if another teams fan base was taking personal shots at one of our players.

Our ladies played a phenomenal season and they gave the number 1 team in the country all they can handle last night. Great night to be a Spider. Extend Roussel and lets pour all of our NIL money into keeping this core intact.

The one thing we might have tried more was just fouling her repeatedly (maybe with bench players if necessary) and making her earn her points at the FT line. Better odds than giving her layups.

Great effort, and no quit in our ladies. Proud to be a Spider.

You can't say seeding doesn't matter, though. On a neutral court, possibly a different outcome. Our team is an Elite 8 caliber team. Get ucla in the elite 8 on a neutral court in Spokane, and who knows.

A 6 or 7 seed if we had won the A10 tourny would have made a huge difference. Not saying we earned a 6 seed after losing A10 tourny - we earned an appropriate seed. Just tough 'cause this team was capable of a big run in the NCAAs.

Agree. The only fair comment is she has bigger hands than Beagle! Sorry TBone. U had time to make that one.

She’s big she’s going to have some male physicality. But I think she’s good for women’s game & carried herself well. Got away with bad elbow but that’s refs fault.

And yeah she got all her points at hoop. But she did a good job passing out of double or triple teams too and finding open shooters. Also looked like skill at the FT line.

As much as she hurt us I think ucla making too many 3s was difference. Needed them to make less.

But the strategy was sound. Roussell mixing in the zone was needed too. His timely timeouts excellent. My only complaint is Doogan more touches in decisive 3rd qtr.

I did not think she was that good. At one point, she tripped over Doogan. She pushed a lot of our players out of bounds. She shuffled her feet a lot.

I was surprised that we couldn't get one or two bodies in front of her to deny the passes and push her back.

There were some pics from the game in today's WAPO. I liked this one the best:

I liked how ESPN kept showing her brushing her hair while she was running back to defense. The implication was that she was still concerned with her looks, even after she schooled UCLA.

The ESPN announcers also said they expected her to be an all-American next season. They really praised her skill.

Way past time to move the first round games away from the four top seeds home courts to neutral courts. Don't allow that for the men so why should the women's tournament have that policy?

My coworker played D1 ball and her sister is Londyn Jones (#3 on UCLA). She was at the game and we had a pretty extensive conversation about it today. We’ve talked Richmond and UCLA hoops all year so I’ve been very familiar with this Bruins team.

She was really impressed with Rousell and said the adjustments he was constantly making is something their coach struggles with. Even during the game the Bruins really didn’t make any changes in how they played (aka changing defense to stop the back door cuts).

She was very complimentary of Maggie Doogan. Really surprised at how good she was and was shocked to hear she isn’t a senior.

C’mon now. Why don’t you ask Coach Roussell if he’d like to have her on our team. Ask him if he thinks she was that good.

Admittedly I don’t watch a ton of the UR postgame pressers but just feels like a next level interview with Roussell. Positive, analytical, engaging, and non-platitudinous.
He always has great postgame interviews. He represents our school so well. Doesn't hide behind answers. Has great poise. And absolutely cares deeply about the program, ladies, fans, and university. He's so grateful. Love that he is so emotional with the ladies. He deeply misses them when they finish their playing careers. He so deeply wants them to have great experiences on and off the court. It hurts him when we lose. His passion for the game and winning is deep, and his character is even stronger. He's a fantastic human, and he is a perfect fit for our university.

Rousell also wants more for this program. I really like that he said this doesn't have to be the pinnacle of our successes. He's hungry for more and expects more. I remember Mooney saying after the Sweet 16 run that it would be great if we were lucky enough to ever get there again. There was no expectation to achieve that success or greater in Mooney's demeanor. That's a limiting mindset issue. Roussell is way more determined, motivated, and positive to ever set artificial limits on our program.

Rousell reminded me of why it is good to be a UR grad. That kind of open honesty, no pretense, and literal love (in the appropriate way) for the young women he coaches reflect very highly on the University of Richmond. Also very obvious is the mutual respect the players have for Rousell and by extension the rest of the coaching staff. That UCLA game showcased his coaching ability in a game we were given little chance to win and the way we walloped Georgia Tech showed how far this program has come.

They tried that in the recent past and nobody attended.

I know but women’s basketball has caught fire now, it my be time to try again in one or two years.
Pauley was only half-full for Sunday's regional final (6k). The market is just not there for neutral-site regionals in the round of 64.

I saw some of the Men’s Tournament attendance numbers and they weren’t impressive either. Facts are most people can’t travel for the early rounds especially during the week. I am sort of surprised there isn’t a push by the P4 to have the hosting model for the Men’s tournament honestly. Why wouldn’t they want to have the home court advantage?

That could be more of a price-point issue. Tickets to the first round are ridiculously expensive.
