Kentucky Game Day

Asterisk: The home court advantage is null and void when you don't have 22,000 (?? whatever # Rupp holds) rabid fans on hand. It is just another empty gym. All of these guys have been playing in sparsely crowded gyms since they were 8-years-old.

A win over Ky. is good, maybe off a bit for us to brag about roughing them up at "home" when the game had no fan experience.
No way. The minute we made the fist run, the crowd would have gone silent. With 3 minutes left, the rats would have abandoned ship.

Great team win with the subs making meaningful contributions.

As to the Blake discussion, why is the guy who had the lowest shooting percentage on the team last year, other than Woj and Grace, while putting up 17% more shots than anyone else, still allowed to jack up ridiculous shots at inopportune times? Why?????

Get the love for his aggressiveness, his competitiveness, his fearless play, but hey Custer was fearless. It doesn't always get you where you want to go. Gotta be smart and aggressive.

Love Blake, love his constant effort, love his defense, and love many other parts of his game. but submit, based on his stats, this would be an even better team if he shot less and shared more.
I disagree. Some nights Blake might go 3-10 from 3, and other nights he might go 4-5. But, we need him shooting 3s. I like everything about his game. He shoots enough and makes enough to have the other team looking for him and guarding him on the perimeter. That makes everyone else's game better.

This game set up perfectly for the Spiders. UR is a veteran team and Kentucky is frosh and sophs every year. Little practice time due to COVID - that is advantage for veteran team. Contrasting styles of play and of course no fans. BUT - UR still had to play the game, and even with that said, Kentucky had ample opportunity to win this game, but give the Spiders credit - UR made the big plays down the stretch with key passes, rebounds, steals and shot making. So UR won this game more than Kentucky lost it.

The only area of concern, as in most years - we are only 7 deep. With Grace and Gustav off the bench. If we can keep out of foul trouble and keep Francis, Gilyard, and Cayo on the floor 30+ minutes a night and get Golden near 30 minutes - UR can beat anyone this year.

Isiah Wilson didn't get much run against Kentucky but he is going to be an important reserve this year. Also Crabtree, presuming he is healing properly, should be back soon and also should provide valuable bench help.

So, that would be 9, 10 if you count Sal, who I think played better yesterday. Sherod going down obviously hurt our depth a lot but still think we have some depth out there.

I wouldn't be concerned with that at all. 7 deep is plenty, especially when we have a reserve like Goose. We don't want any lineups without at least 3 of our starters out there. They are just too good to keep out for very long. If you look at the real good teams out there, they usually have 6 guys, maybe 7 getting a lot of minutes. And, Wilson and Sal are fine if we have to go 8 or 9 deep. And, we still might get some quality minutes from Bailey and Crabtree.

Of course he is our leading scorer. He took 17% more shots than anyone else. Only shot 41.7% last season, far lowest of all starters.

Again, this would be an even better team if he played smarter on offense. Focus the aggressiveness on defense, don't be foolish on offense by too frequently taking ill advised, low percentage shots, often early in the shot clock.

Can't have the lowest percentage shooter taking by far the most shots. Basketball 101. Blake needs to be Blake within the context of what's best for his team.
So I hear what you’re saying but we are what, 26-7 since he started playing for us. I think you mostly go with what’s working.

Regarding asterisk: NO Asterisk, that was a big time win and expected win by the players. Before the season, there was a lot of talk from the team about being hungry, using last season as a motivation, our experience etc. This group of players is sure walking the walk too! Great to see.

Back to Francis. You could see he was the missing piece last year - we had been missing that Gonzo / Kevin Smith type of dawg on the court. If we can keep him and Gilly healthy all season the sky is really the limit with this group.
I am pretty pumped for college hoops on a Tuesday morning.

And my Aztecs are really looking good early season. They lost there Gilly/Francis back court after last season in Flynn (1st rounder)/Feagin (dawg), and are in top 25 too.
