Kentucky Game Day

Well everyone I certainly ate my words today. I watched the game with a bunch of family and friends who are all Spider fans and I had a very good time watching the game. It honestly felt like 2010-2011 again when I felt like we could beat anyone in the country. I have mixed feeling of being very happy to see Richmond win but also thinking even more about the last 10 years that have been a complete waste, today sort of maximizes that frustration even more. That being said UR has some DOGS on their team. They did not shoot the ball particularly well and in the past never would have won a game like this shooting so poorly. It was really fun to watch the guys get after it and win one of the biggest games in program history. I told y’all I wouldn’t deny Richmond is a good team if they beat Kentucky and I’m definitely not denying it now. This team is really good.
Good stuff. Agree here. It's been a long several years, but this team has the look of a legit top 20 team. Bunch of DOGS for sure. Been a frustrating several years with Mooney never being able to complete a roster, but this team is very good and pretty deep. Would love to have one big solid interior athlete off the bench. Hopefully will not lose Cayo or Golden for any extended period. We could be OK with Burton sliding over, but hopefully won't have to see that.

how much was ply drinking during game. Easy. Granted I definitely think Blake took some bad shots & I’d like little more restraint overall but is this 1st time watching him? He’s probably one of the better “bad shots” makers I’ve seen b4. Shown us will do his quick pull up anywhere. When he’s off it doesn’t affect the rest of his game which is great too.

Concur on some of those calls today good lord. My favs may have been the early hand check on golden 20 feet from basket right at start of game or the time Burton & Sarr went for rebound equally & it was foul on Burton. Water under the bridge. Come on home boys with that dub & get ready for Cougar Town.

Regarding Ply, love his passion!! He is more restrained than I would have been at his age. Now at my age I was just laughing at some of Francis shots. Like gk, I know the shooter gonna shoot. I was not in agreement with some of the shots BUT that is what he does and has brought that edge to our team. He is a positive much more than the opposite.

That honestly was not even in the top 10 of games we've played in the last year or so. We did so many things wrong and still dominated them in the end. Kentucky will be a decent team but we exposed them all sorts of ways today.
First, very happy for the Spiders.

I agree with 8 that the game was not one for the ages. However, it is obviously a resume enhancing win assuming that UK can get the act together over the season. I’ll hold my exuberance until after the West Virginia game.

My positive thoughts:
1) Cayo played great and has the kind of confidence I like.
2) Francis is maddening on offense, but I like the energy on D.
3) Grace did an admirable job filling in for a foul plagued Golden with an assist from Sal. Sal was cringe worthy in the beginning of the game, but got it together at the end.
4) The Goose ran the offense great and glad he was over his illness in time to play.
5) Burton is easily the best rebounder in years. Should just play his game and not try to be Nick. Loved him taking the charge too.
6) Gilly had an off game, but was still had great plays and effort. Definitely a unique player and fun to watch.

We’ll see if KY is really a top 10 team when they play Kansas. Either way ever win is important and beating KY is great press.

We didn't just win, we dominated and the lead would have been bigger if it wasn't for garbage points at the end. Our defense was absolutely terrific against a team with 6 freshman that ranked in the top 61 in the country. Many of them headed someday to the NBA. I am very happy, but not surprised with the win, because we have a very good team and potentially the best in school history. It is not just the 5 starters that are good, but our bench also. This was a complete team effort.

In true fashion most VCUers refused to give credit Richmond in its win over Kentucky today.
I know a number of VCU BB fans and they appreciate the game and what the Spiders MBB team accomplished last year and against Kentucky Today. The A10 needs a strong Spider program. We look forward to tripping you guys up this year but I don’t see anyone in the A10 beating the Spides this year.

I recall when Grace was signed there were the typical naysayers on here. Then I got to see a few of his early practices and reported I was pleased with the quality of his footwork, his aggressive play, and I felt he would grow to give us some serviceable minutes. I think I was right, I hope he continues to grow and give us even more.

Believe it or not I did not drink during the game! I’m on the west coast so was only 10am. Reading back through my posts I’d have thought I was drunk saying all that.

I don’t have a team in any pro sport. The only team I love is the Spiders, so this has been 8 months of pent up pride and frustration all coming out after an extra long offseason!

You talking to me? I will stand by my track record on Mooney's recruits.

That said, Cayo has proved me wrong big time and I'll give Grace his due. He played some major minutes today against some of the most high quality big men in the country and gave us some very serviceable time out there.

not calling out any particular poster, but I do think a lot of us can be more patient with new recruits -- myself included

Francis has to realize that taking those quick shots kills the offense developing any rhythm, yet
without his take no prisoners play, we lose the game. Two plays that fired up our team in second half was
Gillys behind the back steal and assist and Blake taking a charge to stop Kentucky little run.

I remember when we played Vandy in the dance and it was like the seeds were upside down. We were just better then Vanderbilt. If we played well we were going to win. Had a similar expectation and confidence yesterday and actually felt like our Spiders should/could win by double digits versus 10th rank Kentucky at Rupp and they did. * Anyway, I/we should have very high expectations for this team, this year. Sure we will probably lose some crappy game we shouldn't (or two), and it could be our next game in the ultimate let down... but for the most part, let's enjoy this season. It is going to be special and a ton more highlights to come. It's great to have high expectations and a team that should meet them. What's even better is they are, as usual under Coach Mooney, great representatives of our University.

(*Granted, I'd prefer not seeing this Kentucky team in March with revenge on their minds and a season under the belt but if it's only us and them I'll take our chances :) ).

I like Francis always being a gunner. We need that attitude, there are stretches in every game, when shots just aren't falling and too many players get in their head afraid to take the next shot. Few players are wired like Blake, which is why every team need a guy like Blake.

A couple people have mentioned that Kentucky is not that good. The did destroy Morehead State last Wednesday. We were lucky to play them when we did, because they will be a terrific basketball team by the end of the year. There is way too much talent on the team not to be good. I think they will finish the year as a top 15 team, but may have some bumps along the way.

Great team win with the subs making meaningful contributions.

As to the Blake discussion, why is the guy who had the lowest shooting percentage on the team last year, other than Woj and Grace, while putting up 17% more shots than anyone else, still allowed to jack up ridiculous shots at inopportune times? Why?????

Get the love for his aggressiveness, his competitiveness, his fearless play, but hey Custer was fearless. It doesn't always get you where you want to go. Gotta be smart and aggressive.

Love Blake, love his constant effort, love his defense, and love many other parts of his game. but submit, based on his stats, this would be an even better team if he shot less and shared more.

Because he is our leading scorer and Mooney knows he needs Blake's aggressiveness on offense, that is why. Yes, there is a shot or two every game that Blake takes that is probably ill advised but you know what he also makes a fair percentage of those shots as well.

I think what people don't understand about guys like Blake is if you try to tone down that aggressiveness/fearlessness, you are essentially taking away that players number 1 weapon. If Blake were a more cautious player, he wouldn't be Blake.

Let Blake be Blake.

97 not saying kill his aggressive nature, but you need to realize that at times getting teammates involved or passing around the horn a few times to get the defense moving may be a better option. I don't want to see UR play a delay game for we don't do well with that but with Kentucky their strength was running and not having to get into a half court offense. Blake is one of those who takes a 25 foot 3 falling back and you are saying NO and then it rips the nets and you think what a great shot! We have needed a fearless player to get the others going. Blake is the man!!!

There were a couple of times as we were extending the lead we took shots early in the possession and I couldn't decide if I liked the aggressiveness or I would rather pull it out and milk the clock. I feel like in years past we've wilted a bit when trying to run things out. For now, I'm leaning toward... let Blake let it fly and let our guys continue to push it. Think these guys as seniors have earned the right to make those shot selections. Can't argue with the early results either

Of course he is our leading scorer. He took 17% more shots than anyone else. Only shot 41.7% last season, far lowest of all starters.

Again, this would be an even better team if he played smarter on offense. Focus the aggressiveness on defense, don't be foolish on offense by too frequently taking ill advised, low percentage shots, often early in the shot clock.

Can't have the lowest percentage shooter taking by far the most shots. Basketball 101. Blake needs to be Blake within the context of what's best for his team.

Certainly agree he takes some ill-advised shots, but some of his bad shots are also because he's usually the one who ends up forcing something up when the offense breaks down and no one else has a shot.

I don't mind many of Blake's shots because they show some swagger that has been missing from our program for a bunch of years. I complained well before Blake's arrival that Mooney was creating kids who were just happy to do what they were supposed to do and not make mistakes, but weren't making plays. Blake isn't afraid to try to make plays and that too me is huge. Its also contagious as we have seen.

The one shot I don't love Blake taking is the step back three after he has tried to break his guy down off the dribble and failed. The same shot out of the offense I am fine with, just not taking that one after stopping the offense for one-on-one stuff and then taking that shot. But if I have to live with that to get the swagger - - - I'll take it.

Blake shot 47% from 2 and 36% from 3 last year. he's a good scorer. yes, he'll take a few questionable ones. but his aggressiveness is needed more than ever to spread the floor with Nick out. Jacob's not hitting from outside. we don't have another high volume 3 point shooter.

Anyone know how close Crabtree is to being ready?

Mostly agree with the notion of letting Blake be Blake. I do think there are a few times when he needs to be a little smarter about things, but then again, we won't be questioning him during the games when he makes 6 of 10 threes. In order to get those games, you also have to be willing to live with the games where he makes 1 of 10, I think. When he's firing shots up there, it's really critical that we rebound well. Much easier to live with 1 of 10 if we are getting 4 of those 9 rebounds and getting another crack at a bucket.

I understand your logic but a scorer must keep shooting and not focus on the last shot(s) taken. He does not hang his head down, but makes up for it on the next defensive play like he did several time yesterday.

This is the one and typically early in the shot clock without anyone else touching the ball. I don’t see how anyone can call this aggressive. It is simply selfish. If he is on fire and hits them then sure it would be perceived differently, but that wasn’t the case yesterday.

On a positive note, he did pass to a wide open Gilly in the corner on a breakaway that I totally didn’t expect to see. Of course, Gilly missed the 3, so may not see that pass again.

Remember a few years ago when we had a lead under 5 and Mooney would pull the old slowdown, milk the shot clock, and he got (rightfully) ridiculed on here for playing not to lose. I love that we are keeping the foot on the gas, except if it so obvious (like when we were up 14 with 2 minutes to play, where you want to run some clock).

It is simply selfish.
I don't think it's selfish and I don't think his teammates see him that way. it's a shot he practices and makes. I don't know his percentage on contested 3's but he believes he'll make it.

he has that ability to forget the misses. a true shooting guard mentality. I don't think Jacob has that. Jacob will pass up a shot when he's missed a couple. we can't have our only 2 real perimeter threats passing up shots.

Here's another nice stat...we handed Kentucky its worst home non-conference loss under Coach Cal. The previous worst was a 9-point loss to Baylor in 2012.
Asterisk: The home court advantage is null and void when you don't have 22,000 (?? whatever # Rupp holds) rabid fans on hand. It is just another empty gym. All of these guys have been playing in sparsely crowded gyms since they were 8-years-old.

A win over Ky. is good, maybe off a bit for us to brag about roughing them up at "home" when the game had no fan experience.
