JJ and Keith

I’ll support Roy all day, but this year not the best example. His 3 seniors start anyway and all 3 are likely going to be on All-ACC teams when announced (Cam Johnson first team, Luke Maye second team and local product Kenny Williams all defensive)
Point is he starts them. And he's had walk-on seniors in recent years. And I'm not a Williams fan. There is no downside, particularly for our team whose 2G scored all of 3 in 1st half and rebounds less now than he did at beginning of season. Now that I think about it, putting Oddo in for some minutes might have actually helped.

Wasn’t there a time when coaches started their seniors on senior night if only to immediately yank them?
This is what I expected. Especially since JJ did start at one point this season. Sorry JJ. At least the important thing is you become the first member of your family with a college degree later this Spring.

No doubt — preaching to the choir. Should have been easy call last night for Mooney to get Oddo and JJ meaningful minutes.

Definitely. They should have started. No game is ever won or lost the first few minutes. And, it is not like it would have meant five new starters who never played anyway. It just would have been four of the guys who started before and Keith. No reason to not do that. If that lineup worries you that much for a few minutes, then we have much bigger problems than back-to-back 12-win seasons.

Totally embarrassing, the AD should have been front and center to impose his will on starting the seniors. I cannot imagine how the parents felt. CM discarded their sons, for what? Start them, call a time out, and carry on with the two season toilet down spiral. Dark day for UR athletics.

They're probably pretty happy that their sons were able to receive an education from a top tier university, unless Mooney had the power to discard their degrees as well

I am sure that is true, but geez put the kids in for a minute for the families that traveled from Florida , Minnesota or wherever. Why would Mooney want to be a loser twice?

So I guess they will be ok if their sons don't get to walk with their classmates at graduation.

Agree, when he would not put Paul in for a minute, I became convinced of the Fake Nice Guy. He got caught up in the "I am the princeton Offense" Nice Guy, Amoeba Match up, I'll win with crappy recruits, make excuses, POS, guy. He bought into his own hype, which was worthless. I will rejoice if Hardt cans his fake a#%.

When you factor in that Keith acted as the "player rep" when many of of the players expressed their support for Coach, the optics are even worse.

When we (inevitably) lost the lead and had to foul, he could even have put them in to hack away. At least JJ gets his money's worth when he fouls.
Obviously, a token start is preferable.

CM's traditional Senior Night track record is, choose the one that best fits:

insensitive, unjustified, petty, stupid, rude, ungrateful, tactless, ungentlemanly, lacking in empathy, failing to show appreciation, bush league, inexcusable, indelicate.

I say all of the above apply.

I remember when CM didn't put Zack Chu in the game on senior night until the crowd was relentlessly chanting "Chu, Chu, Chu!" and he got in for the last 30 seconds and made 2 FT's. There were at least 2 other games that season that were blow-outs where the crowd was chanting for Chu and CM steadfastly refused to put him in for mop up minutes.

To me, not playing and starting ALL of your seniors on senior night really sucks and is a very negative reflection on the coach and program.

And after Oddo came out and defended him after the billboard, this is how he says thank you. I was really stunned JJ only got 3 minutes. JJ just put up 21 points, 2 games ago, you think he might be pumped up to go out in style in front of his friends, family, and the fans at his final home game.

Buzz is everything I wish we had in a Coach. Very good bench coach who makes adjustments and shows emotion and whose teams play with a purpose. Hiring him away from Marquette was a huge deal for Va Tech.
And that's why Tech is seeded 5 in ACC Tournament & going to NCAA's, while we are towards the bottom of the pack in A10 & once again pinning our hopes on the always moving forward "next year".

Chu shot a career 80% from the 3 point line.

I do recall years ago when a player from a school (I can' remember what school but not important), who was a walk-on, got a senior night start, hit a couple of shots right away, the coach left him in, and he had a great double figure game. wish I could remember who and when....

I’ll be that guy...

This isn’t high school or division 3 ball. Both Otto and JJ were honored before he game. The actual game is about winning and I won’t begrudge Money for doing what he thinks is best for the win.

If this is the case, why not JJ in the last minute when we needed a 3, instead of Yates and Cayo. Purely statistically and experientially speaking?

Mooney has never done this re: starting all seniors, it shouldn't be a surprise. The topic comes up every year. I would say few coaches do. Personally I would, most of time it sparks you, even if you're behind slightly on scoreboard, other times a wash, but rarely hurts you imo. But I'm not going to be critical of Mooney for not starting them. I am critical of only playing JJ 3 mins though, that's insulting given what he averages normally and made no sense whatsoever.

You are correct, not CMs style to start seniors. Nevertheless, considering his teams performance, parents in the stands, no chance for post season, maybe by the outside chance of being fired, why not give the seniors who have busted their arses for 4 years some floor time. To me it speaks volumes, the genie has been out of the bottle for a long time.
