I am sure many will disagree, but only Tillman and Grady played like 4’s to me.

Only 2 per year in a 14-team conference. That is not nearly enough for me to worry about whether or not my coach gets any, especially when so many of them have not panned out anyway.

Probably true, but still no reason not to shoot for the stars...pardon the pun. I'm sure I'll get killed for this comment but simply stated Mooney's recruiting has not been good enough the last 7 years. I realize we have the "Big 3" now but we've had too many kids that red shirted and never contributed and then left the program This is not a personal attack on those kids...Mooney recruited them so he either missed on his evaluations or was misinformed on his own ability to develop them.

I would add Melvin Johnson, E.C. Mathews and Terrell to that list. They all had really good careers. Staten was a good player for Dayton.. Fontan transferred and had a nice career at USC. Murray, I believe transferred to WVU, kid had talent but was a head case.

Great post. Thought I would add a few more to that list (in bold), including transfers. Again, the point is that there are plenty of A10 teams who are able to attract top level talent to their teams. In fact, many of those recruits and transfers were ESPN Top 100.

17, top level talent are rated 5-stars; not many of those in the A10. Was told that after getting past the top 15-20 ranked players, rankings are a popularity contest.

Yet, you consistently hype every single star rating you find on our players. Yes, star ratings are BS. Better judge is always what other coaches and programs are offering players. That is where the real talent evaluation happens.

Here are the 4* players I counted in the A10 last year, transfers were not considered.
Code:
Player School Class Notes
De’Riante Jenkins VCU Sophomore Starter, 13ppg
Hasahn French SLU Freshman All Rookie Team
Jamir Moultrie La Salle Freshman -
Jared Terrell URI Senior 1st Team
Jordan Goodwin SLU Freshman Starter, 12ppg, Suspended
Justin Tillman VCU Senior 1st Team
Kellan Grady Davidson Freshman 2nd Team, ROY
LuWane Pipkins UMass Junior 2nd Team
Sean Mobley VCU Freshman -

Out of the 9 4* recruits, 5 were on an all A10 team. That is an extremely high rate. 7 of the 9 are starters, and the 2 that aren't starters yet were just freshmen. 4* players tend to be pretty good on average. If transfers and incoming classes are considered, there are many more 4* players in the A10.

97, I should have better explained my point. I was told that after the first 15-20 ranked players, there is often little difference between a number of 3-star vs 4-star players. Just my humble opinion, but our improved recruiting over the past few years is related to a better alignment of the athletic department and admissions. I sincerely believe that while our new AD may be a bit aloof, he will perhaps improve the process even more.

Mobley was a 4 star? That’s surprising

Nathan,
Thanks for the listing. Clearly the A-10 does sign 4-star guys, and two-per-year is a higher rate than most of our posters (including myself) probably expected...

Also agree that we have a much better chance to sign a 4-star guy who is local or has clear program/geographic/family connections. Nick and Grant may not have officially been 4-star guys, but they are certainly as good as the average 4-star guy on the above list, and they also did have "connections" that helped us.

What was even more surprising to me was the last 5 years Xavier was in the A-10, they had 10 4 star recruits themselves... I knew they were a cut above in those years, but didn’t realize how far we were behind(at least in terms of recruiting).

We held our own against X and their 4 star recruits. We went 3-3 against them their last 5 years in the A-10, and one of those losses was that incredible 2 OT game.

HCIII was at the Spring Jam Fest AAU tournament in Hampton last weekend. his Team Loaded (VA) team lost in the semi's to the eventual winner (Boo Williams). you can see some HCIII highlights on Twitter.

Gotta convince him that he can be the Franchise here, and come out with probable records Etc. Convince him he's going to be a pro and his best shot is to take a path more like Steph Curry did. He's already got on LeBron body and isn't even a junior yet. There's always something attractive about stepping on as a freshman and being the man.

Coleman committed on Friday. He was ready to commit a month ago but there were video production and editing delays to contend with.
