Game Plan vs Bonnies

Was the game plan really to take 35 threes? Sure we were down but what was the idea coming out of halftime after we were not shooting well in the first half? And when Blake is cold, maybe let someone else shoot. 1 for 10 from three before the last minute is unacceptable. Mooney had no response for the Bonnies taking Grant away other than chucking up 3s.

We are a good 3 point shooting team. When Grant is getting doubled, we should be an even better 3 point shooting team. Tonight we weren't, but I will take my chances with the shooters we have the next time he gets doubled like that. As long as they are getting good shots, shooters should not stop shooting if they miss a few.

They doubled and tripled Grant quickly and he at first was not getting rid of ball fast
enough but got in a rhythm in second half. We had less than 10 TOs so ball handling
was pretty good.

I don’t think there was a game plan. That was the problem. Francis can’t play hero ball willy nilly like that, and Mooney can’t let him. It cost us the game.

VT you are so defensive it is it sickening. Do you realize that 35 threes is the most we have taken all year. The second most is 29 and that was when we were shooting well. Why can you NEVER admit that the coaches have done something wrong? Especially when the only reason our 3pt % looks decent is because we made some late to make the game look close. I'm the beginning of the 2nd half we missed a ton of threes. This was after it was obvious we were not shooting well. And we have proven recently we don't have to rely on the three. Schmidt proved, once again, that he is a much better coach than Mooney. He took away Grant and Mooney couldn't figure out any other game plan other than chucking up 3s.

And oh yeah, bye bye at large chances because we don't have more than 2 good wins. Our OOC gave us no margin for error. Keep defending Mooney and the morons running the program.

When I think our coaches did something wrong, I will say so. Tonight, I was not bothered by the 3s we took. So, if when watching the game I am not bothered by our shot selection, why should I come on here after the game and say things I don't mean? And, just because we disagree, why do you feel the need to post like you did on the previous post? Why can't we just disagree? Why is your opinion on the game correct anyway? Why is "sickening" if everyone doesn't agree with you?

I will take this time to comment on what I thought the coaches did wrong against Mason. Just because we had a foul to give late in the 1st half does not mean we want Jacob fouling someone. This was his 2nd foul, and then when he got his 3rd in the 2nd half, he sat for awhile in foul trouble that he never should have been in. First of all, when you foul with 8 seconds left, do you really accomplish anything anyway? They still had plenty of time to get off a shot. Secondly, if you are going to give a foul, bring anyone in to do it. Why allow Jacob to pick up his 2nd there? That bothered me while I was watching the game. Tonight, coaching did not bother me. Sorry, it just didn't.

And, no. out OOC chances are not done. Far from it.

I think we needed to find a secondary scorer inside. The answer too often was to kick out or take deep threes. Too many threes, hard to argue that or that it’s the only option when GG was doubled or tripled.

I have no problem with taking open 3s. I do have a problem with zero adjustments when it was evident we didn’t have our A game and were shooting poorly. Press should have started much earlier. It gave us energy. CM didn’t do all he could to put us in position to win.

I seem to recall someone suggesting putting two guys on the blocks down low when one is getting double teamed, but as spiderman correctly pointed out, it's not 1985 so you can't do that now. Cayo's arm may have been tired from all the shots he took but he does have decent moves when he can catch the ball down low and make one quick move to the hoop. This may or may not be a good offense to use all the time but when the threes aren't falling or Blake's arm falls off it might be a fairly good plan C.

Unfortunately, I just looked and the A10 tournament is not played at the Robins Center, the coaching staff at want to start scheming now for what happens when we don’t shoot well up in Brooklyn.

Our best road win in the A10 was at URI. I will say we were very very persistent with pounding it in to Grant and Cayo. Only 3 shots by Cayo? I was expecting this one to be a tough game to come away with. We need to go into Cayo more and the coaching staff needs to implore him to be more aggressive. I know spiderman thinks he is a top level PF in the A10 and so do I. Let's use him.

It was getting real frustrating watching the team just settle for long range 3’s all game. I think any time Grant is shutdown inside (many of his 13 came from outside) it is a problem with Mooney not making adjustments. I can count on one hand the number of times GRant posted up and got the ball down low. Their big guy was doing it on nearly every trip. Seeing Grant passing the ball around 25 feet from the basket is nauseating.

Hit the nail on the head there. Mooney made Jason Garrett look like a hall of fame coach. He had no answers, didn't take timeouts when needed, made no adjustments and might as well have been a spectator. It's maddening how bad of in game coach he is. Its been a 15 year problem.

Sadly you'd think after going to Olean for 15 years you'd be able to understand what it takes to win there and be prepared.

The only plus I saw from yesterday's game was Tyler Burton's improvement. Really helped in the 1st half.

^Agree with the burton comment. As good as Cayo has been this year, last night made me realize that we are one shooter short in the starting lineup. If this team wants to take the next step (be at the level of the 2010-2011 teams) I think Burton needs to start and develop his shot enough to be our 4th legitimate 3 pt threat in the lineup. As we saw last night he has the potential to be Justin Harper or better, just needs to develop the confidence and consistency with the deep ball.

I don’t think we are a shooter short, we have three guards who all are consistently good three point guys, it just happened last night that all three were off. I love what Burton brings, dude grabbed nine boards in 23 minutes.

Nate just disappeared last night and that’s exactly the kind of game where we need him. One can argue that was game flow and others might argue it was a failure to adapt the game plan. Regardless, team has to find a way to overcome that.

This time I think loss is because of players. you have to think I will step forward and I understand what I have to do for us to win. As a player you should know Grant will have more attention and this is what I have to do. This is one thing I think TJ Cline knew , Kevin Anderson knew . No excuses now . Get it done . You are men now not boys. Who wants to be counted? Who wants to hide behind mothers skirt? You want to be able to say I was there when we did this. I was counted. I was honored to play with my teamates when we acheived what we must do in that 2020 season. And that is sweating, heart beating, lungs crying ,muscles burning, fans cheering onto victory . There is no defeat...only victory.

Coach Fezz has me ready to run through a wall!!!

That sounds like a Slavic version of the St Crispin's day speech...

Whatever Mooney's game plan is at the start of the game is what he sticks with. I don't recall a lot of half time adjustments. As I remember, we were either tied or winning at halftime against VCU game 1, St. Louis, and Auburn. In the second half we got blitzed in all 3. At least some coaches know how to make halftime adjustments.

This is just silly. What about the games where it's close at halftime, and we dominate the second half?

For years we've been crying for a guy who would shoot instead of passing the ball when he has an open look and ending up in a shot clock violation. Mooney coached down so many players into doing this. Now, we have Blake, who never passed up a shot he didn't like. Mooney must be on some powerful meds to allow this to happen.
