Flyer in game

Dayton should go far in the NCAA tournament. In this WAY down college basketball season, I think the Flyers are rated about right.

They have far too much firepower for the Spiders even if Blake Francis was ready. Toppin, of course. But, Crutcher played a fantastic game.

We can’t compete inside with bigger more athletic teams, we need to have an offense that will give us more open looks at 3s and take our chances we’ll hit them

Blake could have helped us during the drought in the second half.
we missed way to many open shots in the paint, make them, and we are right there.
I tight our defense was ok. UD is going to score. You have to match their offense.
2 missed front end of 1 and 1 in 1st half hurt.
Mooney’s T was not helpful
Toppin is fun to watch, but Crutcher is clutch

True. But i felt the good guys never seemed that they were going to win... Hard to get into it with such a damn good opponent!
Crowd was very loud when game was close and we pulled ahead. Toppin is a man among boys. Crutcher was very good. Gilliyard, despite that long dry spell, was really, really good, especially down the stretch. I still wonder why he only sat for three minutes against LaSalle when we didn't need him to win and we had two of the toughest games of the year back to back coming up.
i would like to hear an interpretation of the rule where Goose ran into the Dayton guy standing still which led to the technical on Grant.
If Jake is OK I think we have a real shot against VCU.

And the really great thing about tonight......we got to witness some sort of freaking protest in the student section and it wasn’t a fire Mooney protest.
Makes me so proud.

I thought the crowd was pretty good overall. Especially compared to the first half of the sesson and since we were down double digits most of the game.

Have always liked Dayton fans. Talked to a number of them tonight. They travel long distances to support their team and usually conduct themselves with class. Talked to one policeman about the differences in the way various A-10 school fans conduct themselves and Dayton is among the best.
Lol, one policeman

As I stated earlier in the week, we have no shot with Grant playing soft. He had one good offensive rebound and put back. But ONE defensive rebound and shooting 2-6 while Topping going for 13 and 5. Yes Toppin is very good but Grant has to play better or we have no shot. He is our second best player. Gilyard came to play, Grant where are you?
Grant was quite weak... Ive seen no improvement in his power inside play in two years. Hes a good player but the lack of improvement
Crowd shouldnt care about that. They should have been going wild from the outset. Crowds carry teams in big gmes, not the opposite.
Criwd was fine when the game was close. Crowds become a non factor when the outcome is decided...

The players will look back at this game as one of missed opportunities. The 2-point shooting was 17-50 and most of the misses were within the paint - some point blank. They did a great job of getting the ball inside, but too many misses. As good as UD is, UR had only four turnovers. This is the first game where it was very evident we really missed Francis. We have a highly competitive team that just played within 8 of a very good team and showed grit when down by 20. My guess is both coaches gave scathing reviews of the officiating. The best cure for the disappointment and for our Net ranking will be to take down VCU at their house. The highlight for me was when Gilyard blocked Toppin’s shot from behind, got the ball and led UR to a quick score.

There were points in the first half where the crowd was dead (per tv) and the game was not close to being decided.

You kind of make my point here.

I would really just like to compliment gilly on what I think was the best game of his career. He shot over 50 percent from the field and 62 percent from 3. Scoring 29 points on anyone is impressive let alone the number 7 team in the country(after watching this game I believe Dayton is easily a top 5 team). Gilyard kept us in the game in the first half and continued to do so down the stretch. He is an absolute hawk on defense and even managed to block yes block obi tobbin even though he is a good foot shorter. I think Gilyard is the best point guard Richmond has ever had and he is still only a junior. Ncaa or Bust. Beat VCU

Don’t know where else to put this, but I want to say I’m disappointed with the ticket office. This is the first game in my four years as a student against a ranked opponent at the RC, and they sold 1/4 of the student section to the general public (the back rows), and filled another 4 or 5 rows with a middle school (?) band. Many students who arrived a good 45 minutes before the game were turned away from seats because they were “not open to UR students.” Those seats then sat empty until students said, screw it, if someone comes with a ticket I guess I’ll move.

I know a lot of people on this board want more student involvement at games, and I agree, I’d love for more students to come to games. It makes the atmosphere 10x better. So, wouldn’t a game against a ranked opponent, which drew huge numbers of students be a good place to start? Students who wanted to support the team got turned away at the door, or had to sit in aisles or simply left because they couldn’t find anywhere to sit/stand.

Either some decision makers didn’t realize that a game against the #7 team in the country would be a big draw, or they simply chose to make a few extra bucks instead of promoting student involvement. I’m extremely disappointed at how this was handled.

It's supply and demand. Students basically come to one game a year in any significant numbers and it's tough to leave all those seats open for them knowing that they normally go unused. Granted, we've been terrible for a couple years so it's not like anyone could blame them. The ticket office realized they could get some more paid butts in seats for this one and probably didn't know if students would turn out in great numbers. I agree that they shouldn't have prioritized the Steward band over students.

Students need to keep coming in large numbers and the next time, maybe the ticket office will restore those extra seats.

The ticket office deserves some blame for what you’re explaining, but so do the students.

The ticket office’s job is to get a full house. The students (this year and many many others) have not shown they will consistently show up.

Should the ticket office have assumed students would show up to this one? Probably. But I would think that people who spend money for tickets are likely to show up, and therefore selling some of those tickets is attempting to guarantee a full house (the game was a sell out).

If the student section had been full consistently all year and last night they decided to cut it down and sell some tickets, I’d be more inclined to agree with you. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the case.

Personally I'm tired of staring at a whole section of empty seats game after game, year after year. The heck with the students, tired of begging them to come. Sell ALL the seats, and if they really want to come, sell them tickets for $5. Then we'll see how many really show up.

Go back to the coupon book, if you don't turn in your coupon for a ticket by day before game... they go on sale

The student section is easy. Ticket office sends texts to students. Students have until 48 hours before game to text that they want a ticket to guarantee one. Ticket office can then sell tickets knowing approximate number of students. Students scan in anyway so ticket office has those stats and linked to phone numbers. Really easy.

If you find that a lot of no shows from responses then install a cancellation policy (which is not complicated either).

You are right 2020. The ticket office did a disservice to the students. There was definitely a better way to handle the situation and DT and I-M give 2 options that don't require much thought.

You know what else makes the student section empty? Having games during the student breaks. Of course, the ticket office sells the seats and surprise, surprise the section isn't filled then either. So sorry SpiderR, totally disagree with you.

Last, you know which students DO go to games? Other student athletes. The UR teams do a good job supporting each other in ALL sports. These are the students that technically have the least amount of "free" time due to all the training and of course their own games. Some of the students that were "forced out" of the rows in the sold student section were exactly those students. They go to every game they can regardless of opponent. Fortunately, there were some season ticket holders that didn't show.....

Thoughts from the game: Dayton is very good. They are long and athletic but also play with a calm confidence. Every time we made a run they answered with a crisp offensive possession. Their length really bothered us. Lots of fade-away contested shots and missed layups where we were anticipating being blocked. I thought we played hard to the end and the crowd was good and most stayed to the end even though the outcome wasn’t really in doubt. Obviously our missed ft’s hurt and at times we lost our composure...not completely but just small stretches. You can argue Mooney’s T was a coach going to bat for his guys or a loss of composure...but us calling a timeout with none available is on the coaching staff. The VCU game will be a true litmus test of where this team is. Dayton is just in another stratosphere. Still lots to play for.

Exactly. I am not opposed to them ever selling seats, because I realize other students don’t always come out for games. So a system that lets them know what attendance to expect would help. But personally I think they should’ve expected a full section for this game, even without the help of a system, since we were playing a ranked team on a Saturday afternoon.

My disappointment partially stems from the fact that I am one of the small number who do go to every game, and I was stuck sitting on the steps of the section until the protestors left before the second half.

Also, wouldn’t the best way to promote future student attendance be to let them come in and see we actually have a good team this year?

We may not always match up well with strong athletic teams. But some here seem to indicate that Dayton, VCU, and SLU are all top 10 in the nation. I don’t really think that is true. I think Dayton is the only team that there isn’t a decent chance against on a neutral court.

Im done talking about your "lame" crowd when your ass is sittin' at home. Perhaps our defintion of "close" is different, but in my opinion, even when the game WAS decided and the Spiders managed (with the help of officiating if you ask me) to get the lead under a dozen the crowd was responsive (and not just for Bojangles!). As for how it looked in TV i dont know because i was there...

Grant was intimidated for sure. That first block Toppin had on Grant was kinda funny... He just waited (and waited) for Grant to stop pump faking and when Grant finally let it go Toppin threw it away...
Felt like grant needed to go at obi...draw contact...will need to do this Tuesday vs silva....

Our coaches are definitely teaching the lean-in/kick-out/rip-elbow foul-drawing methods - which is ironic, given that we're near the bottom of D1 in FTA. It was smart to try that against Dayton.
