It’s time we get serious about a field practice facility. Not just for football, but for men’s and ladies lacrosse.
We have dropped a bundle on basketball with the upgrades to Robins and the Quealy Center; time to spread the
wealth.
Possibly a design where baseball and ladies soccer would benefit as well.

Do you mean an indoor facility? Not sure what "field practice facility" is.

Yes, an indoor practice facility. One where our “field” teams can practice and get ready for
games no matter what the weather.
They’re not unusual today, but like basketball practice facilities they offer a great deal to
a team, whether it’s football , lacrosse, hockey, etc.
Imagine the Quealy Center being a football practice center.

Everybody out here has one, because of the wet weather. OSU's has a full-sized football field inside and can easily be split in half so two teams can practice at the same time. Soccer, baseball, softball, track use it, there are drop-down batting cages and they even had a huge indoor volleyball tournament there last weekend.

Where would you stick that? Not much open land near the RC, would the practice fields be the only option?

The master plan from a decade ago identifies a potential building site between the Weinstein Center and Pitt Field. Have heard it's been mentioned as where a new pool could go someday, though I've given up hope of that. Previous plans have also envisioned decking much of X-lot (or whatever it's called these days) to free up some of it for building. The master plan also envisions a multilevel garage built into the hillside where the tennis courts are behind the stadium.

IMO, the the expansion space for the campus is where the current Apartments are located.

I think the university is going to eventually shift that part of campus to be more high density living, similar to the 4 story suite style apartments located next to the Intramural fields.

This will free up some land for development and they could potentially expand the current practice field area to include an indoor facility.

I can see them flipping the direction of the two practice fields, possibly expanding some fields into the adjacent apartments at some point in time.

It would allow them to build an indoor facility alongside the current soccer field. It could be built into the hill and they could include facilities for soccer like locker rooms for Womens soccer, small press box and a small set of permanent stands built coming out of the side of the indoor facility.

On the other side the indoor facility could open up to an outdoor practice field going in the same direction. They could even put in a 2nd practice field if they expand into the current apartments. But there is plenty of room to put in a ~350 ft building alongside the soccer field.

I don’t like the idea of a parking garage where the mens tennis courts currently sit. IMO that is the spot for a new pool (won’t happen now). I think a parking garage should go across the street from that location on the other side of Campus Dr in between Campus Dr and Bostwick Ln.

The 2011 master plan indeed calls for significant higher-density stuff around the River Road entrance, which is intended to evolve into the main campus entrance. The building would be more upper-class housing, administration, and SPCS. It does contemplate keeping some UFA buildings around though, including the ones closest to the practice fields.

It is about time for a new master plan though, so they could obviously revisit things.

SpiderVol, you sound like you have given this some serious thought. If you are just winging it, you lost your calling as a major developer and landscape architect. 👍
