Curtis Blair - Second Coming?

They named the court after Tarrant, they will only name the Dixie cup after Mooney.
Whatever they name after him - they can add the sickening tagline used by the TV announcers who read the school's propaganda about "winningest coach" .....because as we all know by the metric they use of total wins only they could also say "losingest coach" in Spider history using the metric of the now 240 losses.....................Tarrant winning percentage of .655 to Mooney's .555

that's so frustrating. I feel like we're behind the eight ball with these covid rules. seems like we're on hold recruiting-wise until after the season when we finally ask Matt, Sal and Goose what they're doing. we haven't had any recruiting news in a long time.

we have 12 guys lined up for next year with one definite spot left. it almost has to go to a big man, even if Matt and Sal come back. if we knew any of them weren't returning, I'd have loved to chase Curtis at all of his games. same with Buchanan. but we don't know. and Mooney has said he won't talk to them about it until after the season for some reason. I get that they don't have to give an answer now. but it's frustrating.
so here we are. watching good players commit elsewhere.

"Blair's father, Curtis Blair, is a former UR star guard and an NBA official", and according to certain RIchmond coaches, got drafted by the Houston Rockets because it was easier at that time. Curtis was drafted in the second round. That is the acumen and idiocy of this staff.

Agree, too passive. I mean just because of covid, you don't guarantee guys a forever scholarship. If you could get a Blair or a Rodney Rice, you tell Goose, we loved having you, time to go start your post college journey my friend. Same with Sal, great kid it seems, but if we could land an athletic 4 man, we need him. Mooney can't land those guys so probably a moot point, but just like the transfer portal, "amoeba" defense and many other things moon is behind the times and getting dealt.

Another one bites the dust. Mooney had a number of chances with legacies or connection to UR. Blair seemed like the highest probability too. stinks we missed out here, but just emblematic of Mooney tenure.

Recruits see what you and I see. Mooney can't possibly keep surviving at this 55% rate therefore they go to a more stable situation. What they don't know is that Mooney lives in the most stable situation known to man.

Maybe son Blair wanted to play defense & rebound. Probably figured forbidden territories.

I've talked to his dad a couple times in recent years, and dad is a really nice guy. Obviously knows basketball quite well. For those of us who watched his career at UR, he was a fine player.

Too bad we missed out on his son. We really could have used his skills.

Spider, it’s sad we need those 3 to stay because we all know there is nothing else coming. We will need those three just to win 8 to 10 games next year.

Yes they have. Say what you want about Liberty but they have shown what happens when you care about athletics, put money into it and go to the ncaa tournament often.
And football bowl games. They had a QB transfer I believe from Auburn for the last 2 seasons, and he was very good.

We are not obligated to bring these guys back. Does anyone think any of the three possible returnees would be better than either Buchanan or Blair? I don’t.

no, but I'm guessing we're giving them the option.

Did we really need a guard? We have a finite number of spots, and need tall people. I'm 100% for using the spots on the best transfers we can find that are tall.
agreed we need a big for sure.
but if Matt, Sal and Goose don't come back then we need 2 bigs and 2 others.

Think some people are forgetting that Blair is a 2023, not for next year.

Given the upperclass guys we've got, it's still wise to prioritize some bigger guys for the 2023 class, but there's enough uncertainty in how things play out with transfers and whatever that you still go hard after a highly rated guard like Blair where you have an in with him.

Quinn has now been mentioned in three different threads...guess people are excited about the possibility lol.

Agree. Sometimes it's best to not think in terms of slots needed immediately or a specific postion player. Bigger picture is to look at the skill & talent of recruits. I believe Curtis is a skill we could have really used. In my mind this is a big miss by Mooney for a player we should have had one foot in the door.

Honestly, if you are committing to Liberty, I think there are other considerations at play. Liberty is a unique place to say the least, you have to be heavily vested in their mission and worldview, I think to consider them as an option.

I actually think being a legacy player may have hurt us. From all I've heard, many Tarrant players era players are not huge Mooney fans, and I'm sure are piped in more intimately as to the status of the program and its coach. They know Mooney is not well liked and may not be around for his Curtis's entire time here.

No you don’t. The religious thing there is not as big a hinderance as it once was. Athletes are not too involved with it for the most part. Liberty is serious about sports. They are printing money over there and they know that having successful athletic programs increases their profile and makes people not simply think of them as “that weird religious school”. We could learn a thing or two from them.
