Chevez Goodwin - Power forward

Might be the least impressive highlight tape I've seen. Maybe it's a disservice to him, maybe not. All I saw were a bunch of layup put backs against much smaller competition. I didn't see any shooting. I didn't see much athleticism above the rim. Maybe a different tape would prove me wrong.

Sometimes guys just "get it," and "blow-up" in their senior years, or even the summer before it. The red flags for me, based on last year, and last year's video, for Chevez, are: 1) 6-8, 190 is a bit slim, suggesting the need for weight work, 2) his assists per game is really low, suggesting that his passing is not yet there, 3) His blocks per game is under 1. We looked at a 6-6/170 guy's video last week who had 3.4 blocks, and could sky much higher. Finally, his steals was also under 1. If we want a true "defensive force," and that would be ideal, Chevez had not yet shown this by the end of his junior year. He may have suddenly gotten it and blown-up, and those stats may chnge drastically, but my point is that his stats have a long way to go to be impressive, even against top competition. If he was on campus today, and the coaches want him, they have seldom been wrong about our top targets. If he was not, I hope we get the guys who visited today! .

Our bigs have been great at stealing the ball. TA, TJ, DT and ANO were the top 4 A10 big men (6'7+) in terms steal percentage. TA has the 11th best steal percentage in all of the A10, DT was 13th. TJ also had the highest assist rate in the A10 for 6'7+ players. These are important skills for big men to have on Richmond teams. Maybe our system leads to big men getting steals, maybe we teach technique that generate steals, maybe we recruit players who are naturally good stealers?

I trust the staff more than posters here, especially since all we have is one video to go off of. The video wasn't particularly impressive, but it doesn't necessarily reflect Chevez' talent. As with most high school players, you don't know how good they will actually be until they step on the court and play the college game. From what I have read he may be a good shooter from range which is another thing we traditionally look for in a big man.

I'm not exactly sure what people are expecting to see from a 16yo that's 6'8" that has not even grazed his physical potential yet. "He needs to put on weight" ... no shit!

The kid can run, he can catch and he can dribble. At 6'8" at 16, that's pretty good to me. And I can promise you, the 6'8" 16yo's that do alot more than that have Coaches Cal and K and Roy W watching their games.

Well said, Mo!

all about upside here. the most unfinished project of the target videos we've watched, just coming into his own this summer. high boom or bust factor. I like that multiple sources mention his motor.

sounds like he's got his head on straight, too. surprised though, that with offers just starting to come in that he's already narrowing it down. works well for us. I like our chances, love them actually, if we get him on campus for a visit. sounds like he wants to decide in the fall. a lot of late bloomers like this want to wait for the highest offer to come in, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

this is the kind of big I like taking a chance on.

I live less than an hour from Chevez and will go see him play this winter. I will send notes and vids of his games.

I wonder if this means commits from others are forthcoming?
