Bob Black gets new 950 afternoon show

I hope his show will be on a podcast also, many people will not be able to listen 3-4. But great news under any circumstances.
More Black and less Burton is GOOD!! Burton is now full time employee of VCU. Anybody surprised???
Bob Black is one of the best announcers anywhere - knows his "stuff" - and is even better when he has Greg Beckwith alongside.
Gee. They offered him a full time job and he accepted it to better support his family???

Honestly, I have never really understood the ridicule of Greg. For 5 straight years VCU has gone to the NCAA and we have not. And they probably have about 10 times the potential listeners that we do. And we have Luck Chevrolet and Promotional Considerations sponsoring and they have the rest of the sponsors.
The guy has to tailor his program to grow his listenership. All up, I think he does a pretty damn good job of it.

He does an excellent job with his show. I know him personally and he is a VCU guy and he tolerates UR. I am not listening to someone here in town who shows preference to VCU. Knowing what a very loyal fan you are , I am surprised you dont feel the same way. Like I said , he has an excellent show but during basketball season, I don't listen. Football season different story.
Not sure how we got into all this but my original point was that we will now have less VCU and UR will have a voice. End of story.
Great news for Bob, who I've enjoyed hearing back in snippets when Greg is out for a day or two. It will be awesome to have him on the air daily.
Greg is a great guy, too, and he's done a lot for UR over the years. He made the trip to Chatty when we made the championship, even though at that time he was not on the air anywhere, as I recall. Obviously when you start working for a school, you get to know the people there and inherently you are going to talk a little more about it. It gets annoying at times, but like MM says, we haven't exactly given him much reason to talk constantly about us for 5 years. I'm happy for him that he has a FT gig and can keep his show.

Don't sell our sponsors short. We have Richmond Window Corp (Mooney likes their work, from what he's seen) AND Village Exxon. What more could we ask for?
I was hoping to read that Bob Black was taking over the slot currently hosted by the "Sports King." I'd rather hear a Big Al tape delay than that guy.
He's a Delaware fan who supports whoever the locals want to hear about. I can't stand VCU but I can't fault him for trying to grow his business however he thinks best.
Uff. No kidding. That show is hot garbage all around. When your top sponsor is a cigar shop in FREDERICKSBURG and you're on the air in Richmond, you know there are problems. The guy apparently was on TV in the DC area for a long time, but he is atrocious on the air. He must be paying the station a lot of money to buy his time slot, because there's no way they would leave him on this long otherwise. It's embarrassingly awful.
I like Burton's show but his man crush on Shaka was beyond obnoxious. I understand why he gives VCU more love than us ( they win more) but it the manner in which he did it that I think is what rubs a lot of spider fans the wrong way. He still is way better than the other local radio options. Big Al is Big Al, a relic of another era, Wes on 910 is just not interesting and have no idea why 910 continues to put a comedian who rarely talks sports in its afternoon spot. He isn't that funny either.
Greg is a delaware grad and he likes and respects UR very much. like Bob, he works for an employer and is going to give that employer preference, as both guys should. Greg is a good guy and you are lucky to have him there locally. as some have done, you have a tuning button, an on/off button and both should be utilized for your listening pleasure.
I believe fair and balanced would be 1 1/2 & 1 1/2, not 1 and 2. Greg's ok, at least it's not Redskins 24/7
A lot of Burton's material is tape recorded. I was very surprised that it was often not live. Several times I listened to Burton's show early in the segment. When I tuned in later in the day, it was exactly the same material, verbatim. They were even running segments from the prior day, only at different times.
I think Burton is fine, he obviously has a VCU bias, but as noted, there's more to talk about with VCU these days. Wes has improved a lot, he used to be a Philly-homer talking Philly sports in the Richmond market. Not surprisingly, people didn't care. He has figured this out, and I think he does a good job of getting a lot of guests to come on air.

This is pretty infrequent, actually. Sometimes if he has a big guest early, he will replay it later. Other times if he has to leave early for another commitment, they will replay an earlier interview. But the show is live 95% of the time.
Some of the interviews with student athletes and coaches are pre recorded because they are at practice when the show airs. I have no idea how he would air these interviews otherwise.
