Aleem Ford - 2016 Offer

Does he have official offers from both schools? Do kids only take official visits once they've been extended offers?

Generally extend official visits to kids you "believe" you would offer. Generally not have an official offer prior to visit. But no rule.

I don't believe either has offered. Official visits can come before offers, and in some cases offers are made during the visits.

I really doubt Wisconsin is going to sign two kids from the same HS in Florida. Let's get real here. They are probably using some gamesmanship here to get Trice to commit. He's the P5 recruit.

This is not just some hs in Florida, it is a sports factory and roster has multiple D1 guys. You don't think most coaches wouldn't sign the entire starting 5 most years from Oak Hill, or Brewster, etc?

With the state of the program today, the Spiders are not going to win a recruiting battle with the likes of Butler and Wisconsin. It flat out isn't going to happen unless the player has a personal tie to Richmond. If the Spiders can get to the NCAA tournament 2-3 times every 4-years, then yes we could compete for higher profile players. Right now, there is almost no chance that a top recruit (without a personal connection) is going to choose a program that is in the midst of a 5-year dry spell.

I understand what it is. I just don't see it happening.

Not-A, that is what I fear as well. I really, really hope Aleem proves us wrong, but it is a tough sell against Wisconsin and even Butler at this time. Hope our coaches can pull this one out.

When is the last time our coaches have pulled out a recruit at this stage in the game with other competing offers equal or better than ours?

An interesting fact - Looked up cost of attendance for high school for basketball at IMG for one academic year ... $72,000! Holy Smoke! And I thought my daughter's boarding school was expensive. OSC

Maybe the coaches make more than 1.3 mil?? :)

It's crazy, but I doubt they are paying full. IMG has some of the best facilities in the country. A lot better than most D1 schools

Let's see $72,000 for a 4 or 5 year college scholarship -- what a bargain!

I'm pretty shocked, honestly. Feels like he and Trice are best friends or something, and Wiscy knew that in order to get Trice (who they REALLY want), they had to throw a bone to Ford. I'd like to have him, but I don't think he's a Big Ten caliber player.

I think we had our eye on some good talent that P5 either sniffed out or needed. Crap happens.

Until the rules behind grad transfers and NBA draft change, if I were a fringe P5 prospect (ie Andre Wessum/Aleem Ford), I would not commit until the spring of my senior year. Rosters are still influx because many coaches don't know who is going to around next year, even at this late date.

There is so much transferring/ nba submitting/ grad transfer /coaching changes occurring that a guy like Ford can go on visits from Hofstra to RIchmond to Wisconsin in a week or so.

you're right, LT. I used to think a guy should commit early so he doesn't lose his chance. doesn't seem a problem anymore. tons of openings in April. programs everywhere are all over these kids.

Are there any graduating senior basketball players on the Deep Run High School roster we could snag? I look forward to welcoming them to the program.

The only good Deep Run players were 2 Puerto Rico kids who were recruited by the DR coach and were housed and fed by him while they were in high school. Very shady situation. Thats probably why he is quitting. He has no more PR kids. Still trying to figure why the VHSL allowed this to take place.

But we can hang a flag for another cooking contest win :p
VDU claims they won.

Sounds like "Blind side"

Hard to beat offers from Wisconsin and Ohio State. I am glad we got commitments from Buckingham, Sherod and Golden when we did, I have a feeling they would be getting similar P5 offers right now.

Both Buck and Nick had P5 offers. Grant would have also save for his injury riddled junior year. OSC

So, Wesson and Ford look like glass half full, half empty kind of situations. Our staff obviously did a great job getting us on thee guys early and hard which is good. We lost both to not only Power 5 schools but big-time P5 basketball programs. But bottom line is they aren't coming here and we could end up short players again as we held out for folks we didn't get and then fill in our open spots with lesser light. We are in a tough spot - - can't say don't go for these guys as we need this kind of player to improve, but we can't keep putting our eggs in these baskets and coming up empty either. One thing I think we may have to admit is that if we are in hard with a guy and he likes us but wants to wait for spring, i almost certainly means we are not getting him. These kids want a better offer and if they liked us enough to pick us over a higher offer, they wouldn't need to wait. Might have been a time when you could hope these guys might not get that higher offer, but today its probably coming. We might want to think about cutting bait with guys like this in the future if we can't sign 'em up in fall and just move on!
