2025 Portal Tracker

If he led D1 in made 3’s, there’s absolutely no way he comes here unless we throw a huge amount of NIL $ at him, and he probably still would prefer a contender.

Correct. No shot at that kid. & I don’t think we’re throwing a lot of $ around in portal.

A lights out shooting guard just entered the portal. Honor Huff from Chattanooga led D1 this year with 131 made 3s (at 41.6%). Last year, 109 made 3s at 38%. Yes, please!
All we have to do is show him much our system helped set up fellow 3 point marksman Jason Roche for success 🙌

Roche was a one hit wonder, and not for us. He played adequate defense and an occasional 3, but not what we thought we were getting.
Roche shot about 2pp lower than than Huff, still pretty decent.

I think the point is that Roche did it on about a third of the attempts, after being in the same realm as Huff when Roche originally transferred. So we found a way to take a high volume, high percentage three point shooter and make him a low volume, fairly high percentage three point shooter. That’s a cautionary tale for any transfer guy who wants to get up shots.

I hear you, but I could certainly see the right, volume shooting 3 point guy getting a lot more minutes than we gave Roche, and as a result getting a lot more 3 point attempts.

Well sure, herein is the question. Was he not played due to lack of D. Too one dimensional? Those are things they probably could have seen on tape or when he visited. Or did our system of making umpteen passes before you’re allowed to shoot impact him.

I just have a hard time making sense of how personnel selections are being made.

Ouija board.

Well, its such a moving target - the proliferation of transfers early this year - I think 1000 in portal after 2 days makes it impossible task. And of course, Gkiller right on cue - we tend to land the guys that have not been mentioned with us yet - so again an effort in futility. The portal was fun last couple seasons, this year its just blahhhh. I do think the two guard pickups can help us, but front court looking average if no Unsensible pick ups.

I don't think the portal is blah at all. I am always very interested in seeing which guys we get. I think moreso this year when I am so ready to see new players and new starters next season.

I usually enjoy the portal, but I agree that this year it seems rather blah. I’m coming around a bit on Johnston, seems like he’ll be a decent scorer for us. Thomas, meh. At the moment we only have one other opening, correct? We really need to kill it with that one if so.

Would really like to get a Bigelow type. He really stepped up his 2nd year in several facets of game. Don’t think we have that set of skills on our roster????

Honor Huff has had Zooms with Iowa and Penn State, and will Zoom with Vandy and St. John’s tomorrow. Also talking to WVU. A zillion other big boys have also been in touch. Oh, and VCU.

I kinda agree that Juco or D2 shouldn't count for the 4 years of D1 eligibility. Just like an extra year at a prep school doesn't count.

I personally would like an age cap, but I'm sure that wouldn't fly.

I still want to add a lights out shooting guard to start with Johnston. If we have 2 more spots like fan1 mentioned we might, we can then use the final one for some size/defense.
We've already added to 2 guards, one of whom Johnston fits this bill pretty nicely. I'm not sure how we can continue to recruit guards, unless Tyne is leaving and then we would have to.

Right now, our starting wings our Tanner and AP, anyone excited about that? We need an athletic wing that can defend and score like really badly. I realize our 2 redshirts also are wings, so perhaps their is help here, but they couldn't beat out Tanner/AP last year.

I hear you and pretty much agree. My thinking is guard play is just so important, so I wanted to land a good shooter to start with Johnston if we had a couple spots left. But, if just one spot, I can agree we could use a solid wing guy.

I need a big guy to replace Soulis ... won't go into it again as I've covered this before.

I think the guards listing us were guards who heard from us before we signed two. I can't imagine we're after another. it could possibly mean we're not handing Graham or Mooney spots or Tyne is leaving, but that just feels unlikely. if they're back we have plenty (too many?) guards already rostered.

as for forwards, I have to believe we think we have answers there in the redshirt freshmen and true freshmen. we may not, but we have to think that.

we have multiple backup options at every position except the 5 ... unless we think AP is a backup option there, and he's not.

If Beagle and Walz are both back, it would be foolish to use the last spot on a 3rd string big who might never see the floor. There are not many bigs in the portal, and the ones that are good end up at power schools. Why worry about replacing Soulis, who rarely played? Serious question....would you rather get a big like Kwesi, who is probably the best big we could land right now, or a key wing or guard who can shoot, play D, and play good minutes?

Agreed, the whole reason Soulis left is because Mooney doesn't play two big men together. Walz is the starter, gonna play 25 minutes, Beagle will get 15 or so. Another big man is looking at what 5 minutes per game. No decent big is going to want to come here with that type of arrangement.

get ready for 28 & 29 year olds. 5 years of playing D2 or D3 ball, then 5 years of playing D1.

Averaged 13 points per game but only got 19 minutes per game as a reserve. That is some damn efficient play. Question, I have if you are scoring that much why aren't you starting and playing 30 minutes per game.
Looking at kenpom lineup stats, he essentially played at the 5. He was only playing when one of their 6'10 guys was on the bench. He was the "backup" center that actually played the most minutes at center, even though he is only 6'7. Have to assume he would be playing more minutes if he was a 4 or 3 for Indiana State.

we've gone over this many times. most teams including us carry a 3rd guy who can play the 5. I'd like a 4/5 type (Moliva, Giddings, Harper, D Williams, Grace, Beagle, etc) or I'd like a true 5 rim protector. if you think AP could body up inside as needed ... fine. that's arguable. to me that's not his spot.

you don't want a 3rd big man, but want a 6th or 7th forward. that doesn't make sense to me. guys miss games. Hunt missed half the year. we had guys to play his spot when he was out.

I'd at least look into the available bigs including a couple of old targets I wanted and would like a 2nd look at ... Matt Reed and Luke Hunger. Eli DeLaurier from Providence is a VA kid who hasn't gotten much playing time there in 2 years. That type of transfer worked for GW and that Castro kid. 7'4" guy Matthew Von CKomen from Elon had 8 boards and 2.3 blocks per game. never know, but TJ power tried 2 ACC schools and hasn't gotten enough time. Lazar Djokovic from Charleston. Ryan Kiachian from Cornell.
