2025 Portal Tracker

"In this era of frequent player movement and rapidly expanding transfer portal numbers, it's a testament to the culture and sense of family that Coach Mooney has built at Richmond that none of our players have entered the portal, despite the likelihood that many of them would be highly desirable to other programs coming off a successful 10-22 season during which they all competed hard and never failed to show up for games or got lost on the way to the various arenas."

– John Hardt, probably
Is this from The Onion or Babylon Bee?

Man, Gianni Thompson is still around too...

Summer 2020: Committed to BC for 2021 after having UR in his top 7
21–22: BC (played 142 minutes, scored 25 points)
22–23: UMass (played 72 minutes, scored 15 points)
23–24: UMass (did not play)
24–25: Canisius (worked his way up to a starting role by the end of the season but still only averaged 4.7 ppg)

I really hope we have a couple more of our guys in the portal. We need a major infusion of talent and athleticism. I'd like to have as many opportunities" as possible to find guys with more of each.
I can’t believe that there are only 2 Spiders in the portal yet the Spiders are interested in seemingly every mid to high major player. I guess the staff is going with the more volume route.

I really thought the portal activity would drop off, but I guess reshuffling the full deck is the new normal. Sure makes it hard to be a fan of a specific team.

This may be an unpopular opinion here, but I don’t necessarily like how we seem to be “interested” in a bunch of players in the portal. Not a bad thing, but gives the impression of being desperate. I’d rather us quietly and strategically go after key high impact players and focus our efforts on recruiting them, than cast a wide net and hope something sticks. Reality is that if we want to get high impact players we are going to have to out recruit P5 schools for them. We are not in settling mode at this stage of the game. Go find 4-5 players right now who would be high impact and perfect fit and do everything we can to bring 1-2 of them in first before contacting everyone and their grandmother on the portal.

This is very idealistic but is also completely out of touch with reality. If there was a transfer cookbook this would be recipe for getting no good transfers and being stuck with the scraps.

After a 8-22 season there are 200+ programs that are more desirable than ours. Not schools, but men’s basketball programs. There is no way to identify only 4-5 players and guarantee 1-2 of them come here when there are 350+ schools all looking at taking in transfers.

Well, I think this is just the ebb and flow of the portal. You have to show the love early to get in the door, then the evaluation continues. You can't control the info from the player side. You have to make initial interest known. I agree would rather keep it under the radar, but that is just not the nature of portal and social media today.

He went from a recruit with P5 offers to UR, where he didn't play, to Hampton, where he played in a limited to reserve role, to now somewhere else. Got to be hard on a kids who blow up big in high school and then don't live it up to it. See GW3.
Just wait until Smith and GW3 are Auburn’s starting backcourt next season…

I think you bring up some fair points ply. I’ll add 2 things. 1) just because our NET was in the low 200s doesn’t mean there are 200+ more desirable programs than ours. We still have the selling point of A10, recent success, etc. that in my eyes makes us a top 100 desirable program. 2) when I say go find 4-5 guys to come here, there’s a limited window before moving on to the next cohort. I’m not saying we contact 4-5 guys, and wait 2 months for them to make a decision. The turnaround has to be quick like < 2 weeks of contacting them. Colby Duggan is a good example. We contacted him like a week ago and then he’s visiting soon and then maybe give him another week afterwards to decide before moving on. If after like a month we get no one, then I say cast a wider net of interest.

The last thing we want is to be stuck with players who aren’t A10 level talented like this year’s team. Let’s say we have 5 spots open now between transfers and roster going up to 15 scholarship players. I would much rather fill that with 2 players we are very confident are going to make an immediate impact because we took our time identifying and recruiting the right guys, then getting 5 players for the sake of filling up the spots after showing interest to every single person, and then none of them really pan out.

I’m willing to add a caveat that if the player we are recruiting has only 1 year of eligibility left, we can show interest in more players at a given time since if they don’t pan out, they’ll leave next year anyway. But if it’s 2+ years of eligibility, I’d rather hone in and focus on fewer numbers to be more confident that we are bringing in sure-fire impact guys.

I would think Jack Graham will announce.

I do think we can point to some recent success, but not sure how relevant that is with portal recruits. Do think our facilities and campus would be desirable to guys from lower level conferences, but loses value going vs power conference schools. And some guys it will be primarily the $. We did pretty good in portal two previous seasons (Neal, Bigs, Hunt, Dlo) but not much to show last year so far. If this is a poor portal grab it definitely not looking good for moons chances at near term success

this is speed dating. have to move fast, and it's a numbers game.

there's already 1,300 in the portal and we may hit 2,000. there are certainly way over 100 that would be interesting to us.
my understanding is the process is something like this. every kid that hits the portal gets a look from someone on the staff at stats, team and conference level, high school ranking, any reason we might be a fit, etc. if there's any interest at all, kid gets discussed. if still interested, an assistant makes contact to express interest and gauge reciprocal interest.

many of the kids we'll see lists from only get to this level.

internally we're prioritizing. the head coach soon makes contact with the top guys we really are hoping for. the fall back options are still talking to assistants. HC offers a visit. if a kid if offfered and accepts a visit (like Duggan), he's clearly a priority recruit to us. but we're not just talking to that guy. if we need a PG, we're talking to a bunch of PG's and the head coach is talking to a couple trying to get visits. after a visit, kid is told we want him ... but we have to fill the spot. can't hold it long. another guy is coming on a visit for the same spot soon.

the recruits know what kind of priority they are based on all this too. if the head coach isn't calling, they know they're behind a couple guys. some are fine waiting for their dream spot. others want to go where they're really wanted.

So these guys are officially entering the portal as we speak, but it makes me wonder how many of them have feelers out months ago and it's just a formality at this point.

This kid could be our next Dji Bailey…
on3 high school profile:
Davin Cosby is a long-armed wing prospect. At 6-foot-5 his calling card is his shooting. He has a smooth shooting stroke that extends beyond the three-point line. The release point is consistent and he shoots with great balance. Cosby needs to continue developing off the bounce, some initiation ability would enhance his profile as a prospect, it would also help his ability to create his own shot. Right now he is mostly a spot shooter, letting others create opportunities him. Cosby is a very good athlete in straight lines. He can attack a sloppy closeouts off ball rotation and finish above the rim. He has some toughness, is a solid team defender, and a good rebounder from the wing.

A few weeks ago Hurley said half his team was entertaining offers - so yes think it is widespread recruiting, especially teams that have seasons going not so well - coaches can expend more time looking to next year.

“Four-star prospect, rated as the No. 16 shooting guard in the country by 247Sports”

“Ended his high school career in the state of North Carolina at Word of God Christian Academy, averaging a team-best 23.6 points per game as a senior, the best in his division”

Yep it's nuts. Starting over every year us the new model. Seemed like they could have some momentum with the Steph NIL announcement, but again money talks.
It is called anarchy and it doesn’t work. The whole “organization” has to be blown up and a new structure put in place to manage the league just like every other professional league. The problem is the NCAA obviously doesn’t want to lose the management of the high revenue sports and the majority of the schools that are participating think they still want to participate. However, there won’t be over 350 teams in the new basketball model. FBS football had 136 teams last year, so that gets you closer to league size, but I imagine it will be lower than that.

In the meantime, enjoy the chaos. It is a numbers game and the small schools are getting squeezed out. I guess it is a good thing that less students spend their time watching the games because they may not have any to watch as alumni.

Bailey is going to get a bag. but they lost two other starters too, including bobby buckets. 5 starters gone 2 without eligibility. not good for mckillop.

The crazy thing is the mid major powers are able to continue success. Look a few miles away at VCU. Utah State, Colorado State, SDSU. Maybe not sustainable but if you have strong leaders you can still have success. I use SDSU example a lot b/c most familiar. But they have been absolutely raided by the power conferences last three years. Hell, last year they had Saunders hosting recruits as a big program guy, up until the moment UVA offered him 400K. But listen to coach, he doesn't like it but is planning, planning planning and replacing and yes developing freshman too. We are trying to go freshman mostly route (per Moon's words) yet Moon has not recruited well????

I assume their new assistant gm is hammering the portal as we speak for replacements ...
