New week, old question: Wickersham or Coleman at QB for UR?

Cam Coleman has been advised yesterday that he will NOT start v Chas. Southern.

Personally it’s a bad decision and not sure what the motives.

Last Saturday,I flew up to UR from xxxx to watch the game.Over my 64 years(since age 10) of watching UR football I have never witnessed such a debacle which on its face seemed intentional.Not sure what Coach Huesman is thinking anymore but he’s surely very good at losing spectator interest and support.

Gipe's got his teeth into another one. 6'7" wing from Northfield Mount Hermon after transferring from Trinity–Pawling. Looks like first offer since October, but some of his previous offers included St. John's, Oklahoma State, and Georgia Tech.

on paper this seems like about as good a FCS v. BCS match up as the Spiders could hope for...Richmond could be a very strong FCS team while the Cavs are still trying to find themselves in Coach Tony Elliott's third season...

but despite this, the "paycheck game" is FCS v. BCS....Virginia will probably be a double digit favorite...

I know opinions are mixed on the wisdom of playing these games, but as a fan I enjoy seeing how our team measures up against BCS competition...I expect our players look forward to the games also to see how they measure up...most likely UVA never offered a scholarship to anyone of the Richmond roster!

a Richmond win would be a shocking upset to most...if we cannot pull off the win, I'd feel pretty good if we played 60 minutes of high effort, efficient and well executed football on both sides of the ball...if we can do that versus a BCS program it gives us good momentum for the start of the real season against Wofford on 9/7 at The Brick House...

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Spiders Saturday at The Brick House...Coach Huesman said several times since the loss to UVA that it's sometimes hard to draw conclusions from an FCS v. BCS game...I wasn't surprised Virginia won the game, but was surprised we weren't more competitive, particularly early in the game when it was decided...

Huesman says he expects the Terriers will be a big test for the Spiders...I agree with some who believe Wofford may be better than their predicted 8th place finish in the nine team SOCON...it may be a competitive game and should be one that fans can draw FCS conclusions from...

like Coach Huesman, I'm hoping we tackle better if the Terriers are able to get in space...that we use our talented and experienced skill position players to generate a more explosive offensive game...

the Spiders are favored by about 2 TDs in this one...if we play up to preseason expectations we should be favored similarly in many of our games...Wofford should be a good test which challenges our ability to play with energy, excitement, and emotion, intangibles that Huesman was disappointed in at Virginia...

solid execution and a convincing win over the Terriers would erase some of the memories of last season's early stumbles and allow fans to conclude that this team can play up to its strong preseason expectations...when I walk out of The Brick House Saturday evening I want to be energized and excited about the season ahead!

Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz has repeatedly hosted an alleged extremist Muslim leader who pledged “unwavering support” for Palestinians after the Oct. 7 terror attack and once promoted a Neo-Nazi propaganda film praising Hitler, according to a report.

Walz, Minnesota’s two-term governor, even doled out cash to the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, which is helmed by Imam Asad Zaman.

The governor’s office has awarded more than $100,000 in funding to the Muslim non-profit in recent years, the outlet found.

the game against Virginia on Saturday is a fun game for most players, coaches and fans…and the $450K they pay us for the bus ride isn’t too shabby either!

I will be surprised and disappointed if we are not competitive versus rebuilding Virginia who was picked to finish 16th in the 17 team ACC…last I read the Spiders were 19.5 underdogs…a UR upset would be a college football shocker in most circles, but some savvy pundits have the Spiders on their FCS v. BCS upset alert list!

coach Huesman’s been in a lot of these FCS v. BCS games…he discussed what had to happen for the Spiders to battle the Cavs and give ourselves the best chance to win…1) take care of the ball 2) no stupid penalties 3) go to the ball and get the runner on the ground and 4) no QB scramble first downs…that’s a lot to get right and it still might not be enough…we’ll probably need some help from the Cavs too!

the 2016 Cavs were the last BCS win for the Spiders…that squad went on to earn a place in the FCS Playoffs…while in 2011 after defeating Duke in our BCS game the squad went on to an 0-8 CAA season…regardless of how this one turns out conclusions about our team might be hard to draw…it's just a fun game for most folks!

in an interview earlier this week Coach Elliott described the Spiders team heading for C-Ville very well...he warned his team and the public we were coming to win!

let’s hope we give Virginia our best on Saturday night and see where we are at the final gun…that could make for a fun game, knowing that regardless of how it turns out our real season begins on September 7…

Anyone able to have a feel for some of the new recruits that look like they may have some playing time
from the get go? I’m thinking particularly on the lines.

Yea, that’s what my kids call my wearing UR hats, carrying UR labeled luggage, shirts and sweatshirts on vacations or occasional masters competitions and taking the UR tailgate pop up to the beach. After the FB national championship and then the 2011 men’s NCAA, I would get stopped or acknowledged in airports or cities in California, Colorado, Texas, NM, AZ, SC, NY etc. but since about 2014 I’ve been getting skunked.
Since moving from Richmond back to the Peninsula, I had one UR dad and one non UR guy who likes us better than VCU stop me.
Anyone else feeling Spider isolated?
So disheartening.

Congrats to James Wood, son of Spider great Kenny Wood, on getting drafted in the 2nd round of the MLB draft by the Padres today.

Wood entered the summer as a relatively under-the-radar athletic outfielder who had moved from his home in Maryland to attend IMG Academy to focus on baseball. The former two-sport standout (basketball) had as strong of a summer as just about any high schooler on the showcase circuit, putting him firmly on the radar as perhaps the Florida Draft prospect with the highest upside, though some struggles at the plate this spring hurt his stock a little. Hailing from an athletic family -- Wood's father played basketball professionally in Europe and his sister plays hoops at Northwestern University -- Wood is a veritable toolshed and showed at various events an ability to use all of them against good competition. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound left-handed hitter has tremendous raw power that showed up consistently in batting practice, with glimpses of it in games. Right now, it's more of a handsy swing and he should tap into that pop more as he learns to use his lower half better. That will allow him to stay back longer on soft stuff, with his ability to adjust to that a big factor in him reaching his power potential, which could be hitting 25-30 homers annually. Wood clocked plus run times in 60-yard dashes over the summer and is better once he gets going. He's shown the ability to cover a lot of ground smoothly in center field with an outstanding arm that would work in right field should he outgrow center. He's committed to attend Mississippi State, but while he did seem lost at times offensively this spring, it looks like he still could go early enough to never set foot on campus.

With a recent NCAA settlement - scholarship amounts will increase for many sports in the 25-26 season. The biggest increase may be baseball, with the current scholarship limit of 11.7 moving to 34 full ride scholarships. BUT - the roster limit is cut down from 40 to 34 as well. So basically - every baseball player can get a full ride, but 6 less players.

It is totally up to the school to increase their scholarships because of the investment required on the school part and the title IX implications. Anyone see any chance that UR increases baseball to 34? Or would they follow similar arguments that were used to add lacrosse and eliminate soccer and track that this would dumb down the student pool with more athletes, too much money, etc.

Or maybe UR just increases slightly to about 15 or 20 full rides? I can see this having a bad trickle effect within the school and mid-majors in general.
