New York City $53 million gift card for illegals

New York City is providing $53 million worth of prepaid gift cards to illegal immigrants. That amounts to about 15,000 per year per family. This is asinine. Why not give that to Americans?

A-10 women's golf

Doesn't look like this has been officially announced, but apparently the A-10 is adding women's golf as a sport next year. Was mentioned in UR's Patriot League tournament preview video that this will be the last one for us.

Duquesne and St. Joe's previously announced that they'll be adding women's golf next year, but as recently as January, St. Joe's said it was still looking for a conference home. But with us out of the Patriot League and Dayton, La Salle, and Loyola coming over from MAAC associate membership, six programs for the A-10 will be enough to sponsor the sport and run its own championship.

Day of Giving

UR raised almost $2 million from 4,300 donors Wednesday and Thursday on the annual Giving Day. Both are records. It would seem many alums/donors are happy with the direction of the University.

Athletics raised more than $1 million. Men's lacrosse ($220,000) and men's basketball ($174,000) raised the most money. Baseball raised $88k. I was happy to donate to women's basketball and baseball. Thanks to all who donated.

Roche Injury

According to this, and have no idea where this site is getting information, Roche out until late 2024

I am thinking we may be looking to add two shooters (obviously we want all shooters :)) , but this has me thinking we could take a Becht and Turner.

Unfortunately, this looks like two off seasons in a row with Roche completely on the shelf.

King All-Star Game

In case anybody missed it, King is playing in the Reese's All-Star Game tomorrow. 6:30pm on CBSSN.

As the UR press release notes, Grant was MVP of this game in 2022.

Mooney billboard

Fair play by Grant and others.

Several former Spiders who played for Mooney, Richmond’s coach since 2005, since that billboard with the critical message appeared have discussed the possibility of sponsoring a supportive billboard when they felt the time was appropriate. Led by former UR star Grant Golden, that group recently determined this is a fitting time.

"For years, it's been kind of a running joke," said Golden.

Golden plays professionally in Italy and he said in a Monday phone interview that the billboard five years ago was unfortunate, and that sort of criticism can be part of the job for college basketball coaches.

“As (Mooney’s) guys and people who care for him, we felt we needed to show support,” said Golden.

Golden said about 15 former UR players and managers contributed to pay for the new billboard, which is expected to occupy this prominent place near I-95 for a month. It displays its message where the critical one did in 2019.

Complicit with illegal actions and the NIL

I see the unregulated NIL ending badly with eventual Congressional hearings about tainted money and murdered athletes.
I’m ready to see schools band together and refuse the unregulated NIL. Donors did not make their money by not expecting a return on their investments. Howmany thrown games will we begin to see? Any school subscribing to this system will be complicit with the results. It’s time to just say no.

Time to enter the portal

Not for another school, that's for sure.

But perhaps it's time to replace the biggest passion of my life. College basketball has been completely ruined. There's no pride in the schools any longer. It's all about money. I love my Spiders, and I was hoping beyond hope that our players loved our school too. It's clear now that even our above average coaching staff in terms of player loyalty is not enough. There's no loyalty or pride any longer. And with that college sports is dead.

Portal Stats

Can someone gather some statistics on the portal?

How many enter each year out of total number of players? How many have entered from our teams? How many have we gained? How many have left after graduating from UR with eligibility remaining? How many have come in after graduating elsewhere?....

Mooney has ONE asset - loyalty. How are we doing in the portal era with loyalty compared to other schools?
