Mens: Marist Game Thread @ RC: Sat 11/9 6pm ESPN+

My comments are:

1. The lineups were frickin nonsense. Taking out Tanner (our best 3-pt shooter) to put in Tyne, who was awful. Not having Roche in. If we are doing offense/defense, let's maybe do it right.

2. D-Lo driving to the basket and forcing up shots also doesn't work once the deficit is 5/6 and there's less than 30 seconds to go.

3. My worst play of the game (aside from the tech) was the possession where Marist was up 2 with about 1:30 left, and they were at the very end of the shot clock and in jail, and for some ungodly reason Tyne sloughed off of Pascarelli on the wing because the guy with the ball was driving his direction, and sure enough, kick to Pascarelli and bang. Dagger. Just terrible awareness, or if that is mandated by coaching (affect the drive and then try and recover), then terrible situational coaching. Peak Julius Johnson defense there. Over-help on the drive for no reason, then scramble too late to the dead-eye shooter having a monster game.

4. It was stated somewhere on here before, and I agree: we seem to be back to "can't stay in front, now we overhelp, and now we are doing the mad scramble recover defense with two guys running late at a shooter and now we are rebounding 3v5" defense. I flippin hate it.

I'm already at agitation level 8.9 and the season has barely started.
funny you mention that dagger 3 pointer - in real time, I was wondering how tf the guy just held the ball up top until 9s on the shot clock and a guy 1 pass away on the wing - with no other screening action or anything to free him up - was wiiiiide open. I honestly don't even remember the ball handler driving, I thought he just saw a guy open because we were hedging early and had sloughed off that guy, and that guy caught the ball and drilled the 3. Maybe Pascarelli was dribbling but I don't recall a drive and kick. Agree, was horrible defense.

If sman has acceess to the clip as well, would like to review this one as well.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Hampton

I am more worried about this game than the William and Mary game. Hampton is a solid program and will be motivated to go out with a win on senior night against a top 10 opponent in Richmond. We’re going to have to bring our A game this week.
Get on the internet and look at the size of their players wearing the 60's and 70's lineman jerseys. We BETTER bring our A game.

We were down 5 with 50 seconds left when he was hit with the Technical and Marist had the ball. The win probability before that play was over 90% for Marist. And the reality was much higher than that because we were not hot and Marist was hitting their FT's. Our fate was sealed regardless of the technical. Now, I do agree you can't have a technical in that point of the game but that play really didn't impact the L we were about to receive.
??? We pulled within 73-70 with 33 seconds left, which would have been 71-70 without the tech. Then, even if Marist hits both FTs, we can still tie with a 3. Or, only down 1 with 33 seconds left we could have waited longer to foul and maybe gotten another steal. Or, if we get a stop with 50 seconds left, Hunt's layup with 43 seconds left pulls us within 3, not 5, and then we don't even have to foul. To say our fate was sealed regardless? No way, especially considering there have been games where we have comeback from 5 or more down with 50 seconds or less left.

Around the A-10: 2024–25 Edition

It definitely matters long term for the health of the conference. We want to be getting 3+ bids per year like we were a decade ago. Having bad losses OOC makes us a bad loss in conference and drags down the conferences overall chance at multiple bids.

A strong A10 is good for Richmond.
Of course a strong A10 is good for UR. But this year, there was no perception of such strength and again UR is bottom half projected team this year. I think they will be better than that, but this one loss doesn’t mean any sort of doomsday scenario. Pride is the only thing hurt in this situation to me.

If anything the rest of the conference can be upset at Richmond, but again they aren’t carrying the torch for the A10 so the damage is minimal.

Last, made this comment before but this year looks exactly like last year to me. All the crazy substitution patterns happened then too and the OOC record was 8-5. Still managed to win the A10 regular season for the first time ever. Relax Spider fans.

Lol. That meltdown was completely warranted. That call cost us the game, an A-10 tourney game. It is rare when you can say the official cost you the game, but that is the only UR game I can recall in my memory where you could legit say that.

#1 Charlotte

#2 Hodges was fouled! 1994 caa semis. non call made by "you can't see Dick" Paparo. It can't really be compared to Charlotte, bc I expect odds would say Odu was still a small live favorite to win that game & were pretty good with Odell Hodge. The Hodges vs. Hodge battle. But it basically took our chance to win away and came at a crucial moment.

would anyone like to comment on the fact the UR - while down 7 or 5 points on multiple possessions - didn't take any 3s in the final minute until the last play of the game when it was already decided? Not sure how a team that supposedly has great shooters throughout planned to come back from 5 or 7 points down by taking the layups and fouling once Marist demonstrated that they could make FTs and that no progress was being made.

Three times UR took a 2 point attempt when down 5 or 7, including with 8 seconds left down 5 which is the most glaringly obvious spot where you cannot ever take anything but a 3. (The only exception to shooting 2s was the Tyne layup attempt after the steal when he was fouled - but even on that he had a chance for a 3 point play. The others were basically worthless wastes of time.)

I don't understand how this is ever a strategy once the other team hits FTs (Marist was 8-8 in final minute.)

Press, yes.
Go for steals, yes.
Foul, yes.
Shoot 2s after 2 FT makes with decreasing time on the clock - no.

Golden to University of Florida - Hovde to follow?

He may be guilty, and if he is i hope they throw the book at him.

But women can lie (Duke lacrosse case, Columbia mattress girl, Brett Kavanagh, and so on). So it's not beyond imagination.

I know things like this put the university in a tough spot. Sounds like they are doing what they are supposed to - time will tell.
sure, but if the claim is about texts ... they pretty likely have the texts or the ability to retrieve them.

I just can't imagine multiple girls are pursuing charges of stalking, harrassment and dick pics without easily retrievable evidence.

Thank you Veteran

Thank you for this well written post, I would hope every American feels the same way. But I have to ask you: You are a Republican and obviously voted for Trump. How can you reconcile "The cost of Freedom is high but Americans have willingly paid the price to keep our country free" with the fact that Trump called those who died fighting for our country "suckers and losers" and asked "What was in it for them?". Do you think Trump didn't say these things or are you just willing to overlook what he has said due to other issues?
Thank you for compliment on the post. Don't know your motivation for bringing up political issues. The post was intended to thank Veterans for their military service. Even Snopes has stated the statement you attribute to Trump can not be verified or disapproved because it is based on hearsay with no recording existing and it is denied by Trump. Sadly John Kelly who had a very public falling out with Trump when he was dismissed as Chief of Staff leveraged his military rank to make political statements and is the only individual to claim he heard that statement. Biden and Harris embraced the statement wholeheartedly and spread it constantly. There are pros and cons of utilizing high ranking retired military officers in civilian leadership roles. Every military officer is taught not to use military rank to make civilian claims. This election in Virginia a former military officer wore his uniform to campaign. From the military funerals where I have been present I know the cost of Freedom is high. Political statements from any side of the spectrum did not enter my thinking in this post. My intention remains to give a thank you to all who served. Although our country has become much more appreciative of military service I know too many servicemen who were literally spit on during the time of the Vietnam War.

hadn't really thought of that, but I hope it has no effect. it's in the past. it was a mistake but I think Mooney moves on.
I don't think this has any effect all. We need AP and for as much as he went back for seconds on his taunting, it's not like he threw punch or something similar that would impact his playing time moving forward. I'm sure the coaches chatted with him and probably more impactful were some of his teammates talking to him after the seeing that film.
