UVA's Tony Bennett is retiring

I wonder how Bennett would have felt if Guy, Jerome, and Hunter quit less than 3 weeks before their title season started.
One of the articles I read, TB reached out to former players to ask if they would have transferred under the current conditions. Many said they were grateful and helped them greatly to develop, but said maybe. I think the fact that he knows now he doesn't have the opportunity to keep and develop guys like that is a big reason he stepped away. Just unbelievable run winning ACC regular season championships.

Let’s wait to hear from all the players that feel “wronged”. Based on what I have read the assistant coaches were doing all the heavy lifting on recruiting etc, for the last two years, so the players have “relationships” with the assistants, not necessarily with Bennett. Plus if you listen to VT, no basketball player in their right mind wants to play Bennetts style of basketball anyway, so is it a big issue?

It is simply another significant loss to the coaching ranks as college basketball slowly adjusts to the “new world”. Nothing else to see here.
We won't know from the players if they felt "wronged" unless they publicly say so, but that is not something they should do. Yes, players build relationships with assistants, but a head coach - especially one of Bennett's pedigree - likely plays a big role in their decision to play at UVA with his coaching ability, higher level connections, and I am sure he is an overall good guy that players like to be around. Would you want your child's college professor to leave 3 weeks before classes start because they don't like the direction academia is heading, and instead picked the teaching assistant they wanted to lead the class? I don't know what went on behind the scenes, and while I am sure the assistant coaches had a strong idea/flat out knew (why Ron Sanchez left a head coaching position at Charlotte to go to UVA) it may have blindsided the players.

Also, I see where VT is coming from when saying that perhaps UVA would want to explore other coaching options instead of immediately hiring whomever the coach wants as his successor. While I think Bennett has earned the right to pick his successor, I can see the argument for why he shouldn't. Bennett is a hall of fame coach and led UVA to heights never reached before. However, his way of coaching and recruiting may not work in today's college world anymore, with more emphasis on immediate impact transfers, players for 1-2 years, and less development from high school. He retired for this reason, so it does make sense for UVA to consider hiring a coach who is more adapt to today's world of basketball, rather than immediately hiring who Bennett wanted and is likely more of the same thing. Not saying UVA should or shouldn't do it, but I am sure they would've appreciated more time considering their options. Because of Bennett's 11th hour retiring, the department has their hands tied and kind of forced to go the direction of hiring who Bennett wanted (even on an interim basis), which in my opinion is not a fair thing to do to your department that has given you so much over the years.

Senate races 2024

The Senate is all but assured of being controlled by Repubs regardless of Brown race in Ohio. Manchin's seat is definitely flipping to Justice. Tester in Montana is down over 5 points with the margin widening with every poll. Those two pick ups put Repubs at 51. Anything else would be icing on the cake for them.

Brown could very well lose (believe he will narrowly). Slotkin in Michigan is not a give me either (believe she hangs on, barely). Doubtful either Scott in Florida or Cruz in Texas get flipped despite the avalanche of out of state money against them.

Bottom line, even if Harris wins and Dems control House, not much significant is going to change outside of Executive Orders with a Republican Senate.
I agree with your conclusion.

I'd like to thank you for tying the room all together with that rug of a post. Amazing work.
It amazes me how I am the only one on this board that thinks belittling our coach and
constant reminder to our players that we don’t have faith in them to keep our coach.
I don’t think that’s a true fan. Just someone with a bad sense of humor. Billboard
fills the bill.

Scoring, I hope!

Several posters have commented on the vanilla O play calling thus far. Seems uncharacteristic given how we used the razzle dazzle plays to such advantage last year. The run has been hot. The passing has been respectable, but cool.

Believe we have a lot of arrows in the quiver we have not needed to use so far, saving the clever plays for the big games. This is a big game! Consider us a serious underdog. Win the TO battle and weave in the unseen, aggressive razzle dazzle big play(s) and we have an opportunity for a very good win. Depending on overwhelming line play where Spiders run for 200 or 300 yards seems unlikely to work against Delaware.

Looking forward to this one. Go Spiders!

Knowing the full picture now, I do think that leaving 2.5 weeks before the season starts just to get the guy he wants, who was an assistant coach, to be head coach is unfair to the program and especially the players he recruited this offseason. Announce that this will be your last season or retire in the offseason, but don’t leave your guys high and dry right as the season starts just because you don’t like the direction college athletics is heading.

"I'm no longer the best coach to lead this program in this environment". Kind of makes those on here who relentless ridiculed someone on here for having a simple opinion that Bennett should have been fired look pretty foolish.

His style of redshirting freshmen and taking 2 or 3 years for guys to get comfortable in his system was not going to work anymore. Big time recruits were not wanting to play the slowest pace in college basketball.

So, good for him to admit his system would not work anymore, but the bottom line is leaving when he did was a shitty thing to do. Just announce this is your last year and don't quit on your team. And, what makes Bennett think he knows who the best coach to follow him would be anyway? He just admitted his style was not the right style now. So, the next coach talk is strange too. Just a surprising classless move from such a classy, high character guy.

honestly don't even know where to start here, this is a new high (or is it a low) in mental gymnastics which you are undoubtedly the king of.

Making the Big Dance

I agree with the spirit of your post, but I will not rule out an invite if we have an exceptional W-L record and stub our toe in the finals of the A-10.
See Indiana State last year! Only 5 losses in reg season (3 to top 50 teams and two of those were Top 20 teams) and #28 in the NET (after the conf tourney loss); a conf tourney loss to Top 50 NET team in Drake. And no bid for them. Their schedule last year certainly looks better than what ours figures to be but was sighted as why no bid for them. They weren't even first team out as I recall!

So I can only agree with the post if "exceptional' means we beat Auburn and go like 29-4 overall including the tourney loss! Even that I am not sure because we not only have to beat Auburn, but Auburn has to be good for that to get us in.
