Have some fun

I went as a preppy. The parking lot outside before the concert in 84 was just as wild as the concert inside. It was a drug infused pregame event. The smell of Marijuana was everywhere. The Dead had a following, people traveled around the country to go to their concerts. It was a Bohemian, nomadic lifestyle for some of their fans. Some of the fans were Uber rich kids, others were hangers-on. It was the 14th concert for my UR friend who organized our trip. I know a girl who went to upwards of 50.

I am surprised the cops didn't make arrests. They could have disrupted the drug trade in a third of the country.

I told my kids I went, they thought I was cool. I also told them who I went with, they were shocked

Have some fun

Anyone in here around for when the Grateful Dead got banned from the Richmond Colosseum in 1985? Before my time, but love to hear the stories of those there.
The Dead concert I went to was in 1984, I was a sophomore. I went with a group of friends from UR. I drove separately and I wore docksiders, with no socks, and a button down shirt and khakis. I was stone cold sober the entire time and I must say it was cultural. I had a lot of fun watching people. I saw one of my friends come up to me during the concert, his eyes were rolling so much, I could see the whites of his eyes. His head was swaying one way and his body the other. He told me some girl he didn’t know had given a few squares of acid, he took one and offered the other to me, which I declined. I had never seen acid before. The air was full of Marijuana smoke. I heard the song Spoonful. Jerry Garcia sounded rough. We laughed about it in the dining hall on the following Monday. It was a life event.

The guys I went with led the great panty raid of 84 on Lora Robins dorm. One was a journalism major and worked for a local TV station. He was a guy's guy.

He recently died of cancer.

OT: Woj bomb!

While there is no question that money and greed have a
good foot hold on college athletics, I wonder if there is a
group of schools that wants to start another association, where the
old rules prevail. It would be a mammoth task, but FOX started a
network, Tesla started an automotive business, Amazon started as
a bookstore, etc. With the right organization and planning, it could be done.

2024 Presidential Election

Please stop with the bogus lawfare argument. There is no evidence that Biden has directed the DOJ to go after anyone. But there is evidence that he has not gotten involved with the prosecution of his own son. David Weiss, the Republican US attorney hand picked by Trump and Barr to go after Hunter Biden and the alleged "Biden crime family", testified under oath that he has had no interference from Biden or Garland. And Biden did not replace him once elected. Under oath when Trump was President, Bill Barr conveniently could "not remember" if Trump had directed him to open a prosecution against anyone when questioned by then Senator Kamala Harris. Barr looked like a fool trying to answer the question.

The DOJ has prosecuted Democrats as well as Republicans during Biden's term. Trump is lucky he has not been charged with treason after he tried to overthrow the 2020 election. And if he had half a brain, he would not have been charged with taking and holding the top secret documents. All he had to do was to return them when asked and then not lie about returning all of them, but he was too stupid to do so. Had he cooperated like Pence and Biden, he would not have been prosecuted.

I agree the states should not have tried to bar Trump without a conviction, but there is no comparison between Trump and Biden when it comes to using or interfering with the DOJ, at least with the evidence or lack of evidence that is currently available.
With all due respect, the lawfare campaign waged against Trump in hostile forums in front of biased judges is real. The coordination between the Biden Administration and the leaders of the lawsuits is real. One must admit the lawfare effort was designed to undermine Trump and keep him out of office. All it did was strengthen him. It hasn't moved the needle. If anything, black men identify more with Trump.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Bryant

Game notes issued by Bryant

OT: Woj bomb!

If I could afford to buy us the best five college basketball players in the nation, I would do it. I’m sort of surprised some hugely wealthy donors at a random school hasn’t done this yet. $2M a year per guy for five guys. A drop in the bucket for plenty of the elites in this country. What if some rich guy who went to Winthrop or somewhere like that made that offer? There aren’t five great players who would take it?
If they are great players, they will get a lot of money to play at a power school, maybe even more than 2 million.

We have a very good football program

I believe that Huesman stated during an interview after the PL announcement that we run into PL schools far more often than W & M on the recruiting circuit. I think we've got to give it a chance before we jump off the cliff. Perhaps if we beat the crap out of them for years they'll kick it up a notch or two. I still believe the CAA will implode.
The question might be do Spiders usually get the ones with CAA talent when they bump into PL while recruiting.

The CAA may implode, but the new members might just as well start getting more CAA talent after moving up to the conference and get better.
i would point to Monmouth as an example. They are third year in CAA I believe and have gone from doormat to averaging over 40 points per game in the CAA, but their defense is still weak, so admittedly not there yet. They are good enough right now however they IMO will ruin a team or twos playoff chances in the next five weeks, since they have the top half of the conference standings left excepting the Spiders.
If you get a chance listen to the Bryant coach's press conference from the list of CAA coaches from this week. He talks about having to play many freshmen because they are the only CAA talent they have on the team and the rest of the roster is NEC talent. It will take these new schools a couple of years, but I suspect they will begin to catch up. They probably will not be JMU good, but some of them will contend.

Kind of long winded, so I will stop with my worry about going to PL. Do these new teams begin to get CAA talent in the future and the Spiders become their tune up OOC games with PL talent? That said. do the Spiders dominate in PL and then get beat 40 -14 in the first round every year in the playoffs as usually happens to the PL champion now. I will also admit I was extremely impressed with the committed recruits list coming in next fall, so maybe the coaching staff can pull this off, time will tell.

Not being argumentative, and my opinion does not matter, but I do not believe PL football is at the highest-level Richmond is capable of and it is highly likely the PL would have taken Spiders after the CAA imploded. if it happens.

Transfers-Plenty of Ivy

He did quit, I think he felt he lost his starting position to Matt Traynor. A by-product of the easy transfer.
Huesman said in press conference Parker wanted to preserve his RS. He was not in two deep for a couple of weeks, so I thought he was dinged up, but now I have no idea if the situation just popped up this week because he was ready to go again or if he has been gone a while and the news just came out.
Guess it does not matter since he is gone.

Defense is getting thin by my count, thank goodness the scout team guys were good recruits, they have to grow up fast now.

2024 Presidential Election

My point is these pollsters are wrong. They are over counting Republican participation, as they did in 2022. You heard it here first, November 5 will be the last day of Trump in elected politics.
My wife thinks the same as you, that Harris will easily win. But I keep thinking about the 2016 election when the polls had Clinton easily winning and Trump legitimately won. Since it boils down to the "swing states", nothing would surprise me. And if Trump loses, he and his team are geared up to claim election fraud and will no doubt do everything possible to change the outcome. And per Trump, if he becomes President it will be the last election anyone will ever vote in.

We have a very good football program

Well said Ferrum Spider. I totally agree with you. We are trading some currently mediocre CAA teams mixed in with some other solid football programs in the in the CAA for a bunch of teams that could care less about football. The issue becomes after this year that we have to elevate an entire conference with no national respect if the Patriot League does not add WM and or Villanova. Our route to playoffs will become to win conference and mix in some formidable out of conference games to end up every year with a great record in order to make playoffs with a high seed. My fear is the competition then will become much better than what we face in the Patriot League. The key will be if our coaching staff can continue to recruit at the high level we now have set in the last couple of years. The depth we have now can be attributed to lots of talent on our roster. Great job by our staff of selling winning football in a formidable conference with a great education. Our facility upgrades in our support areas are also outstanding. So far not an issue as we have a great class put together for this year if we can get them all signed.

Speaking of going after political opponents, what was lawfare? None of these cases will ultimately end in conviction. And no, I did not vote for Trump...nor the vacuous Harris. Denying defeat coupled with Jan 6 was a bridge too far for me....so is lawfare, states trying to bar a party nominee access to ballot, etc, etc, etc. Pox on both.

I pray you are right, the one thing that may sway it is the "closet Harris Republicans". Will not say publicly, or even to pollster, but will vote Harris.

step 1: in May, bet $100,000 on Winthrop at say 1,000:1 to win the national championship.
step 2: THEN pay $2M to the top 5 guys.
