Welcome back Gilyard!

I hope he comes back regardless of what anyone else does. Even if he's the only one who comes back, our odds next year improve tremendously.
I hope so too, but is also like to see some more rotation at the guard spots. Let’s cater to our strengths, which appears to be our guards, and play some hounding defense and go more uptempo. Turning people over and playing in the open court is what gilyard (and our guards) are best at.

We get bogged down and at the moment don’t appear to have the three point shooters or low post play to slow it down and play in the half court as effectively.

Gee, I wonder why he would come back? Doesn’t he know you guys hate his coach?
I’m not sure what that means. Are you indicating that he must love his coach? Or are you insinuating that the coach is good because he’s coming back?

Very few suggest that CM is unliked by his players. Many suggest that CM is a mediocre coach. Jacob returning doesn’t really support or disprove either.

There are many ways to look at it. But I would think that a player with Gilyard’s ability would be wanted at a lot of schools, but he‘s choosing to stay because he enjoys and believes in CM.
Personally, I’m not going to get into this debate about whether Mooney is a mediocre coach or not. But, I do think it
says something positive about him when you have a Gilyard want to stay.

Well thats easy. He's chasing an INDIVIDUAL record, has nothing to do with the coach.
SpiderRick did you eat Tide Pods when you were little? Of course one of the reason is the coach. The players love the coach and have tremendous respect for him. That is why none of the starters either left or transferred last year and that is why some may return this year.

There is no debate about Mooney being a mediocre coach. The long term record and post season failure settles that. As far as Gil coming back, there can be an assortment of reasons and speculation. We may or may not find out, and I wouldn’t jump to conclusions one way or the other what he thinks about Mooney.

Maybe one of the reasons he (and hopefully others) wants to return is loyalty to the coach and wanting to prove you Mooney Haters wrong. I think Gilly knows a hell of a lot more about basketball than you armchair coaches who probably never played. Why not just appreciate the fact that Gilly's coming back rather that turning this thread into a typical bash Mooney one?

Respectfully, this turned into a Mooney thread by someone suggesting it was due to Jacob liking the coach.

I for one am glad he’ll be back, I really like Jacob’s game.

As for everything being about CM, I think that just comes with the territory until he proves the “haters” (bad term btw) wrong.

AnnapSpider made this about the coach - post 87.

Only reason it took him three days to announce was because he had to get his edit put together. Good stuff.
all the stuff about records and personal accomplishments is nice and I guess one way to frame the announcement that you plan to return...

after this season of listening endlessly about five 1000 point scorers, years of experience on the court, pre season favorites, All A-10 this and that...I was very tired of it, and the cover it provided for how the team was not playing up to its potential...

I'd have preferred his announcement to have highlighted his goal to lead the team back to where it was at the end of the 2020 season...in the conversation for an NCAA Tournament bid and a threat to win the A-10 Championship...

I hope that's that's why he's returning, the personal accolades will take care of themselves if he leads the team.

Good luck Jacob.

Go Spiders!

This is awesome news!

Though I do wonder how our young guards (Wilson, Bailey, Nelson) feel about it. Gilyard is pretty much slotted into to 36-38 minutes a night (if substitution patterns continue).
Nope, we are recruiting two more, all 5 are coming back, and everyone plays, no one over 12 minutes a game. That will wear out the opponent (and the stat keeper...). :)

I hope Gilyard plays more like 33 minutes next year. Just give him a little more rest and rotate guys so everyone can go full tilt while they are in. Develop the guys so injuries or foul trouble aren’t excuses.

as for the coach, I’m sure the guys playing all the time like Mooney...why wouldn’t they??? But that also doesn’t mean they would hate another coach. It doesn’t have to be an either or thing.

Spot on.

In another thread there was discussion separating the the false narrative of "Mooney haters" from the reality of hating the failures of the program which are indisputable. This has absolutely nothing to do with anyone personally hating on Mooney. Instead it's exhaustion with the long term lack of success. It's his program, and he hasn't delivered. At this point, reasons and excuses don't matter. Results matter. How anyone can look at the last 16 years and consider it success baffles me. We play for conference championships, NCAA bids, and to beat the cross town other school. How do we label those 3 criteria - success of failure?

So to those who hide behind the labeling of fellow posters as "Mooney haters', I ask does that make you then a "Mooney enabler" If so, then are you content to go on indefinitely with more of the same? It's a pretty simple binary choice.

I think it doesn’t impact Dji given he’s not really a point. Wilson has shown he can play alongside JG.

Maybe Nelson injury/recovery was a factor.

Anyone can read my post history and see that I don’t think Mooney is the coach to guide us to our greatest potential. I’m no basketball genius but his 16 year tenure speaks for itself. I’ve never attacked him as a person, never insinuated that he’s not a very good man, never said I “hate” him...but I do hate that we have wasted a ton of time, money, and potential the last decade. Jacob Gilyard is an amazing player and I’m glad he’s coming back. I’m glad he loves and respects his coach. TJ Cline loves and respects his coach as well among other recent players. None of those guys has been able to play in one NCAA tournament game in the last 10 years. I do blame their coach for that as cruel as it may sound. For all the folks who think anyone who espouses anything anti Mooney is anti UR let me ask you this: will you be Spider fans after Mooney leaves ( if that ever happens)? because a lot of you would rather be “right” and see Mooney have moderate success than to see UR really truly achieve great things. I don’t hate Mooney, I love my alma mater and the program should be bigger than one guy or booster.
