UR vs. Sam Houston State

One of y'all just posted on Twitter about comparing this loss to stony brook last year. That is a very good point. We will be fine.

First game of the season, against #3 team, new staff and schemes. Disappointed in the final score- yes. More disappointed in some posters who are so negative. I'm going to practice this week to show my support, I hope some of you will show support in a way that works for your location and schedule. GO SPIDERS!

Flying into Syracuse or Albany Friday from Sunshine state for Colgate game.

Tough loss against a good team but we didnt do a lot of the "little" things well. When was the last time our d-line affected the game? No sacks, no pressure, no impact. Four guys just taking up blocks. We will never be elite until our d-line impacts the game ala 2008.

We did an incredible number of things wrong and gave them a ton of opportunities. If that's really the third best team in the country and we could do so many things badly and still be within earshot of potentially tying the game late, I feel pretty good about things moving forward.

Not unexpected, but very disappointing. Helleva way to start the season.

Let's take advantage of the Colgate pass defense. Then keep getting more organized each week up until we get revenge on Stony Brook. November will be the month that tells the story of this team.

Agreed that we didn't execute a lot of fundamentals but the lack of impact from the d-line is frustrating. If SHSU is top 3 then JMU is top 2 or 1. Right now our defense is not good enough to get us to Frisco. Such poor tackling. Just diving and arm tackling...pathetic. We scored plenty of points despite misfiring on a bunch of plays. Did we have one sack tonight?

How many times have we voiced our concern over the fact that our punts will be or were blocked. Our blocking to protect was so porous and our set up time to get away a kick was so slow.Easy 7 points for Sam.Not sure I get it.

D played much better in second half. Briscoe does do a nice job of quickly getting the ball out out of his hand. We looked a little disjointed and just need to clean up some things up. I think we need to stick with the run a little more. Collins looked like the best of our running backs to me, although the fumble around the 5 yard line was a killer. Obviously we can't miss on 5 opportunities in the red zone, and I'm sure we won't moving forward. Disappointed with the loss, but I still think we will be a very strong team. We have to beat Colgate...can't start 0-2.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I want to highlight the break out performance of Simpson at the WR spot.

We have a great WR group returning, but after losing Brian Brown it was great to see some new faces make an immediate impact.

The Good:
Lauletta is back in full force
The Bad:
I don't have time to write it all down. But I expressed my concern about installing the so called "hurry up" offense, after watching UVA last year looking very unsure and unorganized when they installed that offense. It might be "no huddle" but it certainly wasn't anything close to "hurry up". I actually think we got the ball off quicker last year when we huddled. UR looked like a team that was trying too many new and different things.........like my golf swing, when I try to do change three different things at once, and go out and shoot 102. Hopefully they will grow in to it, but the next game will be very tough, mark my word.

Question: Do we have another punter?

Playing the 4-2-5 is basically a prevent defense. We all know what the prevent defense does. Prevents you from winning.

seems to me a huge problem that we are to slow punting the ball, don't know if it's the snap, the blocking, the kicker or some combination of the above

My concern with the hurry up O is that our defense has little time to rest making them more vulnerable.....if our possessions only last 1-2 minutes were putting our undersized D in a vulnerable position.

Game has opened up with all of these spread offenses, pro style, "stretch the field" etc. Not many teams going with "smash mouth" approach. Perfect example is evolution of the TE spot. Important to get pressure on the QB, but loading up in the secondaries is imperative. Even LBs have to be versatile enough to shut down the run game, and cover WRs on occasion.

I don't understand the rugby style kick - on that block, punter rolled right into where the pressure was coming from

Gotta figure out the running back situation. It's not a bad thing to have 4 very capable backs, but it was a bad thing last night.

And he was the only guy on that side and still got to the punt. It was gawd awful.
