Transfer Portal

Two problems with that. Injuries happen, so those "end of bench" guy might be needed during the season. Heck with the portal kids can are now leaving during the season. Other problem is we need more talent and we don't need end of bench guys, we need impact guys on this roster, pretty badly. Really badly if Tyler doesn't come back.
I agree we want and need impact guys, but injuries or no injuries, I don't think it matters much if you get to 13 roster spots or not.

Possible starting lineup as of now:

King
Roche
Bigs
Tyler
Quinn

*Or, maybe Smith instead of Bigs if he shows he can get it done on both ends, including the 3 point shot.

Without Tyler:

King
Roche
?
Bigs
Quinn

Without Tyler, we would need as much scoring as possible here. Noyes would give us some size there, but numerous teams start 3 guards, so Smith could be a possibility here as well. Or, maybe Tanner shows early he will be a scoring threat here? I am thinking whoever would be the best threat from 3 would be the best fit because that would help open things up for everyone else, especially if Roche is hitting them.

*But, no doubt, we could use another impact transfer (talking to you, Brown).

Starting Lineup (with Tyler)
King
Dji
Burton
Bigs
Quinn

Starting Lineup (without Tyler)
King
Roche
Dji
Bigs
Quinn

I am valuing defense a little more in starting lineup, especially if we have Burton's scoring - though I do share concern 4700 has for shooting. Would love to see Noyes force his way into one of the lineups. Not discounting Smith or Tanner either, but just a big jump from h.s. to A10. Based on the level of competition this season, Tanner may very well be more ready to make that jump. The level of comp and Tanner's game look very drastically improved from his junior year to Combine Academy. I like Dji and Bigs both in there for defense at the start of the game anyway.
With Brown and no Tyler, would go:
King/Brown/Dji/Bigs/Quinn

If Brown falls through, I think we need at least one more impact player / proven scorer. With Burton gone, though we would miss his scoring, I think his athleticism and rebounding would be harder to replace. I think someone like the recent portal entry from Cincy would be a good fit to help in there with Quinn and Bigs in that scenario.

I agree we want and need impact guys, but injuries or no injuries, I don't think it matters much if you get to 13 roster spots or not.

But how many is minimum, 12? We have 9 guys right now (10 if Burton comes back). I think its more important these days to fill the max 13. It's probably a little more challenging to do so sure, but now there is less concern about bottom of roster guys taking up spots for years and years. It's a numbers game in many ways. You will miss on guys. The more guys u have the more margin u have on the misses.

Feels like nobody wants to be a role player anymore. They move on looking for more PT, or get pushed out. Regardless of reason w all the attrition there is really zero need to be saving spots on roster.

And with our team we have injury concerns...dji has been very injury prone, bigs had an acl b4, quinn had some foot issues, Noyes hasn't gotten mins so we don't know what he can carry...these things r not unique to us....but if u r carrying a small roster u can get in a bad spot quickly.

Just not a fan of not maximizing your opportunity. Of course u don't take a head case that is bad for UR or bad for team chemistry but if u r less than 13 ships u r hurting yourself. Same concept with OOC games imo.

Another long list for Zae Blake out of Green Bay. DC native who played at Hargrave. Played JUCO for two years then a year at Green Bay, so I guess that means he has two years left.

44% from three this season but only 2.4 attempts per game. 9 ppg.

If Mooney were smart, he would be utilizing our new women's b-ball PSU transfer/social media influencer as a recruiting resource to help us land some high-level talent.

Do you know the intimate details concerning this young man? We should or shouldn't still see if he fits but we should wait until the investigation is completed.
Another thing VCU doesn't have to worry itself about.

feel like I remember liking his game in HS. He never played at VT?

Seems odd to redshirt and transfer but who knows. It's a new world. Will see if guys get stuck in places they can't transfer out of at some point if they tighten waivers, where they'll have to wait for grad transfers (if they've not already used 4 year of eligibility.).

As to role players and transfers, I think guys like Randolph who can't see a path to being a starter will likely transfer often. Starters who are role players will mostly stick around IMO. It's a fine line, and guys like Marcus may be right that they have ability to start and put up some numbers at other schools.

Someone like Sal would be an interesting case study if he was like a rising junior and had had his same first two years from UR. Would he have left? Where would he have gone? He never developed skills that translated to college basketball anywhere, really.

Ques Glover is visiting BYU today, while Tahlik Chavez is visiting Louisiana Tech.

There are very few reasons not to max out your roster and very reasons why you should.

It’s bad form to accept this as a normal practice.

As pointed out with injuries and unknowns we need players. Fure up 1 year grad spot guys if needed

Imagine a scenario where Quinn gets hurt and the frontcourt rotation for a game (or longer) is Walz and Bigelow with Noyes in the mix.

Noyes and Walz the only HS recruits on roster from last 2 years.

I am not saying we are perfectly fine with our 10 guys...my point is don't get to 13 just so you can get to 13. We need players, but we need good, quality players. In your above scenario, I would rather take my chances with Walz, Bigs, Noyes, and Tanner, than worry about giving a guy like Kwesi some minutes.

I think we should probably get used to a lot of teams not getting to 13 spots. With recruiting, you have plenty of time to get guys to complete your roster, (although with the portal, you don't necessarily want to do that all the time either), but with the way the portal is now, teams are losing more transfers post season, and won't always find the guys to replace them.

We just need 8 good players, that is all Mooney has ever played anyway. Throw in a couple walk-ons for practice. We just dont have 8 good players yet.

And, a lot of teams out there just shorten their rotation when they get injuries. If you aren't good enough to make the rotation before injuries, you didn't all of a sudden get better just because someone else got hurt.

This is an interesting one. His team went 3-29 (yikes!!!), but he was 27-61 from 3 (44.3%). Watching his highlights, he looks quick and athletic, and I think he could play at this level.

I’m perfectly ok w a short rotation but this has nothing to do w rotation. Tho I’d say typically not a lot of difference btw the 8th & 9th guys on bench. It’s about getting to a top 8 out of those 13 guys. Increasing your chance of success & making rotation better.

If this staff can’t get a minimum 12 dudes there is something really wrong. Feels like grossly lowering the bar i.e. temper your expectations.

I hear you, G, and can agree that we need to add a couple more quality guys, preferably impactful guards. We only have 4 guards right now.

Shawndre Jones circa 2014/15 (or whatever his freshman year was) begs to differ.

Well, I guess it depends on how we define rotation. ShawnDre played every game the year Ced got hurt in 2013-14, including having 6 double digit minutes played games BEFORE Ced got hurt. I was talking more end of the bench, fill your roster guys. We, like pretty much every team, has had a lot of those (another reason why I am not bothered if we don’t get to 13 guys), and I would rather shorten my rotation than throw those guys in there.

D.J. Smith out of Little Rock. Soph with two years left. 6'0" 160lb PG who stepped up to be a double digit scorer this year, but only 30% from deep.
