Transfer Portal

Interesting tweet/stat I saw. 4th overall in the play less category among all top 11 conf teams. Now we've had just some bodies come through here like Kwesi and JMA that could hurt the #'s but the 3 guys last year were all lower too I believe. On 1 hand it's not a bad thing it means we won't just hand over PT, on the other hand transfers could be considering things like this idk.

The reduction in playing time is probably correlated with going after players transferring up instead of players transferring down. Players transferring down have little playing time on their current team and are looking to go some place where they get more. Players transferring up are often the ones with the most playing time on their current team and looking for a spot on a better team.

Brief Mooney interview. Talks a little bit about how challenging things are in the portal era with things moving so quickly and how you might have to invest a couple of precious hours researching a guy only to find out he's not a good target. Long hours for the coaches trying to filter through everything. (Obviously not unique to UR.)

staff could save a little time by leveraging your google talents before contacting a prospective recruit.
or at least check the police blotter.
Do you know the intimate details concerning this young man? We should or shouldn't still see if he fits but we should wait until the investigation is completed.

no, I don't know the details. only saw the charges and the video.

but the portal moves quickly. this won't be resolved anytime soon. if our staff is concerned with spending "precious hours" researching a guy to see if he's a fit, then you see the charges and you move on.

if he's eventually cleared and if we still have a spot, we can spend time on him then.

Couldn't you hire a recruiting coordinator? I would seperate McGonigal's role into two full time positions. Someone should be basketball operations - which is basically running the day to day operations of the basketball office (travel, meals, summer camps, etc) - but then have a recruiting coordinator dedicated to the whole recruiting process and who could also screen potential transfer targets first, then pass on to coach for further review or visits, etc. Wonder if with the addition of the transfer portal - you need a dedicated person just to monitor portal, even during the year as potential guys who might enter the portal and be ready when it opens.

I thought this was SF's job??

There are limits on the number of staff members, but there are changes underway for 2023–24 across D-I sports. The concept of volunteer coaches common in many sports is going away, and the number of allowed coaches is increasing. Men's hoops will be allowed two additional coaches, though they won't be able to do off-campus recruiting.

Anyway, with the way the portal works these days, I'm sure it's an all hands on deck situation when it comes to researching and filtering.

What a shame - a coach winning roughly half his games, making millions of dollars, has to do a little work! And, then make decisions on top of that! Outrageous, abuse if I ever heard it 😂 😂.

I think there is a limit on COACHES - but I don't believe a limit on staff. Only limit there is money and your budget from your school. The key is that "staff" technically can't take part in coaching activities - so I don't think they are allowed to coach during practices, etc. But I am sure most of them are involved in some capacity at practices.

Some recruiting evaluation can only be done by a countable coach, though I believe non-coaching staff can do as much on-campus video evaluation as they want. They can't do anything off-campus or make phone calls to prospectives though.

And yes, you're correct about the limitations on non-coaching staff with respect to coaching activities. They can't participate in anything on-court like shagging balls or running drills or whatever, and they can't be present at any voluntary workouts.

But again, there will be a bit more flexibility on this starting July 1 when there will be up to two more spots for staff designated as coaches, though they still won't be able to do off-campus recruiting.

But the big thing here is "off-campus" which for HS kids is bigger, because you go to AAU events or their HS and watch them play and meet them. For the transfer portal - that is irrelevant. Everything is film based I would assume as you watch their college games and make an assessment off that if you take the next step with them. And that is where I could see this extra staff stepping in.

Every day that goes by with no additional portal news is not good news for the program. Last year, we were on numerous higher profile portal targets and had visits set up for the good ones to visit us. Outside of King and Brown, I haven't really seen much action from our staff, other than a whole lot of swiping right on some guys in the portal. That concerns me.

wonder how much NIL money comes into play with these transfers. a P5 will likely include some money. wonder if Mooney is reaching out directly to donors like PQ and asking for cash for players.

it's a legalized "Blue Chips". bags of cash. a fully loaded Lexus. a tractor ...

97 - I have the same concern. Hoping there is some unseen (to this board) activity occuring. I would be thrilled with landing Brown, and then someone like the guy from Cincy. If not, we are really going to have to count on some big time jumps in production from the freshman and our returners. Which is possible, but less likely in my book.

Maybe someone can answer this. Where were we in late April last year at this same date? How many transfers did we have on board?

sman, it is wild some of the numbers being floated out there. Heck, SDSU is losing a starter (Keshad Johnson) with the thought that he is basically trying to get a good payout from a P6. It is an issue, I had heard some radio chatter about Tennesse Vols football season going south over NIL bickering on the defensive unit. Wild west of college sports out there.

I feel like if we get some NIL donors, Mooney would be more comfortable with the SDUS model - i.e. everyone gets the same payout. Of course, I do think guys would still be free to get their own deals on the side - like Keihi Clarke and he good feats store at UVA.

I'd bet it would go further than that. "everyone" would literally mean everyone ... non-revenue athletes and especially women. title IV has so far stayed out of the NIL discussion I believe, but it'll at some point be a point that men are disproportionately benefitting from NIL money.

We were done at this time last year. And that's with a slow start since we were dancing.

4/10: Quinn commit
4/14: Quinn official UR announcement

4/14: Bigelow commit
4/15: Bigelow official UR announcement

4/23: Roche commit

It would be nice to have at least one more transfer commitment by the end of the month. They’re getting picked off one by one

We're on a long list for Elijah Hawkins out of Howard and DeMatha. Small PG who's played two and has two remaining. Shot 46.6% from deep this year after shooting 29.7% from there as a frosh.

Averaged 13 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals, but also 4 turnovers. First-team MEAC this year after being rookie of the year previously.

We are getting closer and closer to the JMA, Kweisi, Chandler Diekvoss, Kovien Dominanus terrority the longer this drags on with Mooney just filling some roster spots, so he doesn't look bad not having a full roster.

Counting recruits and transfers, as of now, we have added Smith and King at guard, and lost Nelson, Goose, and Randolph. I would call this good improvement, but to see great improvement, we would need another impact transfer there....Brown?

At forward, we have added Tanner, and lost Grace, and possibly Tyler. Without Tyler, this is obviously a huge drop off, even if Tanner sees time and plays well as a freshman. With Tyler back, things could be okay here because Bigs could step up and replace a lot of Grace's production.

So, bottom line, we probably need another piece or two to see great improvement, preferably at guard because you can never have too many quality guards. but adding King at least makes us much better at a crucial position.

I think UVA only has 10 guys right now. With transfers like they are now, there is not as much of a reason to just add end of the bench guys.

Two problems with that. Injuries happen, so those "end of bench" guy might be needed during the season. Heck with the portal kids can are now leaving during the season. Other problem is we need more talent and we don't need end of bench guys, we need impact guys on this roster, pretty badly. Really badly if Tyler doesn't come back.
