Transfer Portal

???? Well, how did we fare with Grace in his 4th year when he became more solid in the rotation? Geez, I think he was a pretty key piece, especially in the A-10 tourney? How about Harper's last 2 years? Think we did okay there. Or, Nate's 3rd and 5th years? Think those were good years too.

I just find it very strange that 2 of the main talking points on the board today are Mooney stinks at the portal, and Mooney doesn't develop players. Geez, I guess examples of the opposite happening mean nothing.
I think the transfer portal and development will go together. I thought last year - we did well in the portal on paper. Quinn, Roche, and Bigelow all looked like good fits for us on paper. But for one reason or another - they had trouble last year at times adjusting. BUT - that is where the development will come in.

Does Roche take the next step and become a consistent shooter for us and can shoot 38% from deep all season, and not dip down to 31% in the league. Can Quinn become and all A10 center in his 2nd year? Can Bigelow become consistent and just give us a little bit of everything - maybe 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists a game?

Development will be key for us with the portal - because it will be rare for us to have a guy step in right away and be the leader from day 1.

Sorry Wood, I missed your pun the first time:
We lost a player to a team who literally cancelled their season last year and their former AD said this about the program. "The entire program has caught on fire, and the fire has burned down everything, and all that’s left are the roots". Hmmm, seems like a situation where we might have an advantage, considering our players were not engaged in brawls and murdering other people, but meh, I guess New Mexico State had the trump card over us.

You say this like from day 1, he only considered 2 schools, us and NM St. It just seems like you sometimes decide to attack our program based on something that happened, regardless of whether the attack is justified. Suggs averaged 6 points a game in his 4th year last year, and had we landed him, you probably would have attacked us for getting a guy like that.

all is well!

No 12th or 13th guy under Mooney has ever climbed the ladder to get playing time. You usually play right away as a frosh coming off the bench when our team is full of upperclassmen, or when our team is bad for 1-2 years - its all young guys playing a lot with no one to replace them and then we have a good team in year 4 because they have basically played 4 straight years together. That is our formula. Not developing the 12th man to be a good role player down the road.
Go tell that to MGrace.

I understand your point but I assure you we can’t develop anyone at the end of the bench if they aren’t actually on the bench.

I agree. Mooney is really bad at developing players after they commit elsewhere…

Working the McGeehan connection...Jay Pal out of Campbell. Spent one year at a JUCO, two at Jax State, and one at Campbell, so has one year remaining. 6'9", 190 guy averaged 12 and 7 for the Camels this season. Was named to the Big South tournament team with two double-doubles including going for 26 and 10 vs. UNC Asheville in the title game.

At this point, we need to be hoping someone good enters the portal late and everyone else has filled all their slots.

1.5 blocks a game as well. He pretty much describes the guy a lot of you are asking for. And, no doubt, I would take him too. And he was 26-79 (32.9) from 3 last year...which is pretty good for a 6'9 guy like him.

I will say to be fair...I never felt we had a real shot with Brandon just listening to what he talked about.

6'9", 190 makes Sal seem like a beefcake, but at least this guy has shown he can put up stats.

(Jay actually doesn't look super skinny in photos, so I wonder if he really is only 190. Not to say he's a bulky guy, but he's at least got some muscles.)

Just look at that school list says get the kid! Not even worried about weight if he can’t physically guard his man that well. Most importantly, when Quinn not in there, like to have someone who can strike fear in opposing players thinking they have a free run to the basket without getting their shot rejected. From what was posted here has good block numbers.

That is a long list of suitors. We don't do well with long lists of suitors. Would fill a need that is for sure.

Gotta hope McGeehan gives us an edge. I'm never sure how much current coaches help guys who are leaving, and I'm sure it varies, but at least there's an opportunity for a connection there.

He could help if we fall behind by 15+ a bunch of times again, and need to press. Quinn not suited for pressing, Walz unknown.

Shemarri Allen out of UMKC. Two years at JUCO and then two years in KC, so one year left. 6'4" guard originally from Asheville, NC area. Second-team Summit League this year at 17 ppg. 34% from deep, 5 boards per game. A/TO at 2.7/2.4.

We've also reached out to his highly coveted teammate RayQuawndis Mitchell, who is looking for his fifth school in six years. Also second-team Summit League with 17 ppg but a volume shooter at only 34.5% overall and 30.5% from three, despite jacking up 8 attempts from deep per game.

Josh Uduje will be committing tomorrow. Visited Vandy and Oregon State, so I'd assume he's going to a weaker high-major. Not expecting us to sneak in here.

Yeah, have not seen mention of him with us since the initial laundry list six weeks ago.

There were some rumors that Reid was having trouble getting a waiver, then that he was down to VCU or Wake. Would be kinda funny if he was the only one that didn't head to VCU.

Another name from our recruiting past...Asher Woods headed from VMI to Tulane. He had a not-great game against us in the opener (8 points on 3-for-14 including 0-for-7 from deep) but ended up as their leading scorer as a frosh.

A one year “transfer up” guy, but from the same offensive system sounds like a good short term option to me. Another if you can’t land this guy who can you land question. Not going to be a program changer, but the hour is getting late and the pickings slim.

I think he's perfect from our point of view as a 4/5.
we'll see if it works from his point of view.
