Transfer Portal

There are about 1,100 players in the portal. I hardly think Jaynel is the only one leaving a program with a leafy campus, pine trees and family atmosphere.
You are absolutely correct. Mooney better get used to more of the same and learn to operate in today's basketball world.

As must every coach in the country. Everything you've said is correct, but hardly unique to us. Good players are leaving the best programs too, not just mid-majors, low majors or low/mid-tier P5 teams.

Yep. So far Indiana has snagged Love from UNC, and the 7 footer from Oregon.

Some may remember Gus Larson, who we offered back in the 2021 class before he ended up at Penn. He saw only 10 minutes of floor time as a frosh, started the first game of his sophomore year against Iona but went scoreless, got only a handful of minutes the next few games, and then suffered a season-ending injury. He's now hit the portal.

feels like we've talked to a bunch, but never land these Northfield Mount Hermon kids. unless I'm forgetting someone.

Finally, something more concrete. We're one of four finalists for Jadyn Parker out of North Florida along with UNCW, ETSU, and Iona. Decision this afternoon.

6'10" big with two years remaining. Strictly a close to the basket guy (only 6 attempts from deep in three years).

FINALLY some promising news. Nice find. If I remember correctly, that account was the one that leaked Roche's commitment to us before he announced, and all the Citadel guys got mad at him for it.

I will say, a back to the basket big isn't really the type of player I thought we were going to target. Curious how this plays out.

Could be a nice complement to Quinn, playing a Garrett-type role off the bench. Solid shot blocker (not quite on Garrett's level, but who is) who will give you some buckets around the rim with aggressive post moves while he's in there.

Not sure it's our biggest need, but it's an interesting possibility and we've got more slots left to fill.

Mooney might as well change up the offense. Could help defensively but agree on surface a little odd w Quinn and Walz. I'd take a stretch 4 of course but he's not that if not shooting the 3.

I have all but guaranteed that one of the spots will go to a big. have to have 3 that can play the 5.
but I kind of ruled out guys like Parker and Burke Smith who have no perimeter game. I figured we have 2 of that type big man, and we'd look for a guy that could stretch the floor a little. maybe a Grace type.

but clearly we're interested in Parker, and he looks like a hard working inside guy. might even be a rim protector which we haven't had for a long time. I'm on board.

Not exactly an impact transfer option in my opinion. Probably is more of a bench/depth guy for us.

a star transfer big man isn't likely.
obviously in a fair fight I like our chances against UNCA, ETSU and Iona. but it seems clear he'd be backing up Quinn and fighting Walz for time here. I don't think he's a 4. we already have problems shooting.

so if he's got a clearer role at these other schools and if that's important to him, it's very possible we don't close here.

I would be OK with losing this one. Just don't see a good match for our system and while we could use some big man depth, I would hope there would be some better options out there, that would be a better fit for what we are trying to do.

imagine if the plan is to play him at the 4 moving Bigs to the 3.
we'd rebound the heck out of the ball, but might struggle to score 50.

I actually like this. He is listed as a 6'10" F and I think his role here would be backup 4 and 5 for us getting around 15 minutes a game. If Burton transfers out, he might be in the running to start along side Biggs. He rebounds and shoots well (57.3%) and isn't a high volume low percentage 3 point shooter.

We have plenty of other spots available to get a ball handler and 3 point shooter. Biggs won't lose his starting spot to this player, so I don't think this adds a transfer risk. I don't see any downside.

I think if we had already landed our PG and shooter, people would recognize this as a final complimentary piece to shore up the front-court.

But, there's a big difference in a star transfer big, and a guy who averaged 6.7 points a game over 3 years at North Florida in the Atlantic Sun conference. At 6'10, a guy should be above average and the star of his team if he is looking to move up a little.

his role isn't and wouldn't be as a big scorer. I'm assuming he's a plus defender. he's a banger inside. he'd rebound and block shots ... likely in a reserve role but could be more.

we'd need scorers on the floor with him. especially shooters. not sure we have the right pieces yet.

Well, he only averaged 20 minutes a game (and only 6 points) his 3rd year at North Florida. I'm not sure 15 minutes a game here makes us any better, and if he actually starts with Bigs we are in big trouble. And, we don't have to start a "4". Most teams don't have a "4" anymore, and when they have multiple forwards starting, one or more are great shooters. We would get destroyed if we started Bigs, Quinn or Walz, and this guy.

A banger? He's listed at 6'10, 180. The better A-10 teams would have their way against him. Actually, most probably would. He didn't even average 5 boards a game at North Florida, where he might have been the tallest guy out there a lot of games.

He was 31-60 at the line. Not only no 3 point threat, but no 12-15 footer threat. A much thinner Nate Cayo without Nate's inside scoring game....I loved Nate, but would Nate have ever played if he were thinner without an inside game?

Look at it this way... In our dream scenario Burton stays, we get a quality ball handler, and a quality shooting wing in the portal. Will Jadyn Parker play meaningful minutes in that scenario? Yes, we only have two other players taller than 6'7" on the roster. He is still probably getting 10+ minutes a game at 4/5.

Anything less than our dream scenario, and he is getting more time. I agree we are likely in trouble next year in that case, but it isn't because Jadyn is on the team, it is because who isn't.

I'd love a better player at his position with nobody else transferring out. But I don't think it is realistic. If Jadyn comes and is the third best player we get in the portal, I'll be happy.

he averaged 9.4 rebounds per 40 minutes his last 2 years. that's up in Isaiah Bigelow range who is clearly a great rebounder.
in "Parker is a banger" I meant all the highlights of him scoring are inside, dunks and hook shoots. he shoots upwards of 60% from the floor. he's clearly long armed. doesn't have to jump much to dunk.

on one hand you feel the better A10 teams would have their way with him at 6'10' 188, yet you want to go positionless with 4 guard lineups? A10 teams wouldn't have their way with a 6'5" guard as the 2nd biggerst guy on the floor?

if Cayo was 6'10" and shot 59% from the floor? yes.

Maybe Boyden has convinced Mooney that defense and rebounding win for mid majors. Maybe he looked at St. Mary's, HOUSTON, SDSU, VCU etc that have a good defense every year and are in the NCAA conversation every year. Maybe.

Still think our biggest need is a guard that can get in the lane, distribute and score, and shoot 3's. That is my number one need. But a tall long athlete that can defend to throw out there with Burton, Bigs, Dji? I'll take as well.

Some losses our wins in my book. I don't think we missed out on some huge difference maker here.
depends on who we get at that spot as a 4/5. if next guy's not better, then we missed out.
right now we're really small, especially if Tyler doesn't come back.

FYI, Northfield Mt. Hermon is in Massachusetts, not Connecticut. I have some friends who went there, and have visited campus. Imagine UR in the woods in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, I messed that up in the post three years ago. He's from New Canaan, CT.
