Transfer Portal

Really liked the looks of O'neils game.

Here is my thing with the portal. I do think we will get two players that we will all be excited about. Myself included. I was last year, and thought we had a good roster - albeit in retrospect we should have grabbed a PG. BUT, I think Mooney A) did not want to recruit over Jaynel. B) miscalculated the essentially two year layoff for him, OR C) just decided that he was going to play him as much as possible to get him ready for future year runs - hoping he would develop and be a top tier player like KA did/was by end of freshman year.

I thought this season was big litmus test in that we have a very good roster, but Mooney would need to get outside of his comfort zone to get the most out of them. Instead, we started out up and down - looking pretty damn good at times - close L's to cuse and Charleston, nice W vs Temple - but we could never maintain or build on that level. We regressed.

So again, think next season we will pick up two more good pieces, and have good returners. It will be on Mooney.

Glad he is recovering well, modern medicine and surgery techniques are a wonderful thing. Great to see.

Agree 23 on O’Neill. Had pretty good feeling on him. Length consistent 3 pt shooting east coaster 2 years. Hoped we’d be in there stronger.

Maybe Andre Weir told him to stay far away.

I think some kids are looking for a nice place to go for an extra year of college ball. the palm trees in Santa Clara look inviting.

saw an Ivy kid (Yale?) transferred to Hawaii. I'm guessing it wasn't for their grad program.

Great post, 23. I agree with all of it. I don't think Mooney had a good year coaching. No, I don't want him fired, but coaches, like players, can have a bad year, and he had one. It started before we even played our 1st game. You correctly mentioned PG issues and whatever the reason, it's on the coach for either not getting a PG in the portal, or miscalculating Nelson's immediate impact. I was a big fan of Nelson early in the year and he had some good games for us, but he definitely struggled more and more as the year went on, and I don't see him being that 30+ minute solid PG we need. I do think he can still help us and be a rotation piece, but I am hoping Smith can come in and show more right away and be our big minute guy there.

That being said, I still think we should have won more with the roster we had, so that has to be on the coach as well. Could be a lot of reasons, but looking back I think by trying so hard to find that lineup that clicked, it seemed like we never settled into anything. Maybe too many substitutions, and too few stretches of keeping the same 5 out there for awhile. That could be a reason why we were so inconsistent. Back to PG, we got below average production there, so it wouldn't have hurt to play Goose there more. The change to Dji did nothing for us, so the change should have been to Goose there. That could have led to more Roche, which looking at how poorly we often shot, likely would have helped with that.

I do think we should have seen Noyes more. When you are winning, and things look like they are clicking out there, no, I don't think you should play guys just to play them and give them experience and all that. But, we struggled so often this year, and lost enough where I'm surprised we didn't see Noyes more.

I am looking forward to seeing who we will land in the portal. We need shooters. Preferably shooters who can also get to the basket and score there at times. If we land them, I will be my optimistic self and talk top 4 finish again. If we don't, I see us having a year just like this past one.

For sure. Nothing wrong w it. O’Neill has 2 in the palm trees if he wants it. I know in past Mooney has said they prefer to target multi year transfers.

Fwiw I think Santa Clara and Hawaii r both underrated for bball too.

I agree nothing wrong with it. Good for the players. The way the portal is just puts more emphasis on coaches being players coaches and teams having great chemistry every year. If players like their coach and teammates, they might be less likely to leave. So, the portal could be positive or negative for programs. Last year was a positive in that we added guys and didn't lose anyone. We keep doing that, we should be in good shape.

I want a big guard who can put his head down and drive to the basket, make a shot at the rim, get fouled, or do both. We have lacked that for a long time and I think we need it. Otherwise, we end up just passing the ball around for 25 seconds and jacking up a low-percentage three. Way too many empty possessions like that this year and in recent years.

Ya, guess so. Seems weird to me, as things are totally different for these guys and they have a limited window in which to find a new home. I know this one is for the Final Four when a lot of head coaches are in attendance and meetings are taking place, but there's also another dead period April 10–13.
Spring LOI period opens April 12 and runs through May 17. Guess they wanted to have a dead period before signing day.

That depends, do they have a grad program in surfing?

I think another thing to consider with the portal - we need a mix of guys transferring up and transferring down.

Last year - we had guys all moving up in Roche (Citadel), Quinn (LaFayette), Bigelow (Wofford) and I think we need those guys, but also need to mix in guys who are moving down looking for more playing time. Then you mix that in with HS recruits and you got a good recipe for success.

I don't think it matters which way a transfer is moving. find the best players/fit. and then play them if they're the best options.
I agree with this. There may be guys stuck on the bench at P6 that could be very good in the A10, BUT many times there is a reason the guy is stuck on the bench. We need to identify 2 guys that can score the ball and make an impact - wherever they may come from. If that happens and Burton is back, then we don't need major improvement from the current guys - just incremental improvement and more consistency.

we were calling everybody for a while. now it's gone quiet.
should call this Aussie from Campbell.
Big South Freshman of the year Anthony Dell'Orso

Here's my tracker updated as of this morning - by my count, there are 24 guys we've reached out to who remain uncommited.

As others have mentioned, we don't have any public confirmations of visits, zoom calls, etc. with any guys on this list right now. That doesn't mean those things aren't happening, of course, but it would be nice to see some public mention of traction with someone this week or next.

Former Spider transfer target Allen Betrand is looking for his fourth school.

I kinda rule out all the guys with just one year left. Mooney's always going to target the ones with multiple years.

Was debating posting this, but your Richmond Spiders are among the 80(!) alleged schools to reach out D2 transfer 6'9 wing/F Jonathan Pierre. This list ranges from Duke all the way to Sacred Heart. Portal Kombat indeed!

Might get a little more news in the next few days with the dead period lifting tomorrow at noon through the weekend.

I'll take him, looks like PQ will have to outbid Miami, and that won't happen.

Duncan Robinson made a pretty nice jump from D3 to D1.

This guy was at D3 college 15 minutes from me and transferred to Illinois, but got hurt and never really played: https://www.btpowerhouse.com/2019/8...-fighting-illini-basketball-depth-chart-stats

The portal moves fast. I know someone posted and nice spreadsheet of guys we contacted, and we can see they are moving off the board quickly. Will be interesting to see who we lock in on this offseason. I was not as high on the Bucknell to PSU transfers as some, but PSU seemed pretty darn happy with him.

We haven't been in the picture since the initial swipe right, but for those still keeping track, Mack has now cut his list to five.
