Transfer Portal

Former Spider recruit Lucas Taylor, sophomore out of Wake. Originally committed to Clemson then switched to Wake coming out of HS. AAU teammate of Dji I guess.

No list of transfer schools yet. He had a ton of offers out of HS and seemed like we weren't really in the running that time around, but he did have a lengthy thread.

He was class of 21 and Lucas is solid...Knew he was transferring and I know he and Dji still talk.

To dox is to reveal the actual identity of an anonymous online account. This was a joke because spiderdad is very up front about who he is.
So he doxxes himself? ;)

Sounds like when I was accused of a HIPPA violation because I told someone what a physician diagnosed ME with....

Justin is very good. Can play 1 or 2. Been playing against and with him since 3rd grade. Not sure if he would come here but love his game. From what I understand, he’s leaving Central for a bigger school.
If you mean larger enrollment, that ain't us...

Anyone know how Mooney is doing? Obviously his condition is no fault of his own, but is he able to make contact and visit with transfers or could this be hurting their recruitment at the moment?

or course, and they would anyway. but yes this hurts in recruiting. Mooney has to rest.
it's explainable to recruits but still. the head coach I'm sure usually has a huge role in recruiting transfers from the portal.
Hardt will have this primed up as one of the reasons this was another transitional year in his March 2024 postmortem he does with O'Connor. You can bank on that.

I'm just trying to think of it like a recruit. Building a quick relationship with Thomas, Boyden and Gipe is great. but with other schools I'm talking to the HC. I think that would carry more weight.

In our experience the HC comes in when they are ready to offer. For some guys that is early (higher rated or viewed higher) for others it could be little later.

agreed with normal recruiting. but doesn't it get right to the HC quickly when it comes to the portal?
kids are commiting in some cases just weeks after they put their name in.
the dust will mostly be clear by the time Mooney's back in the saddle in May. maybe he'll have some involvement earlier. I don't know.

fair point...I hope he's better sooner than later, so it gives us the best opportunities for those we are going after.

btw ... where are you guys finding the best portal info these days?
the Verbal Commits site I was using is broken.

Yeah, Verbal Commits, Portal Report, some of the other guys on Twitter.

Anyway, another Incarnate Word guy, Jonathan Cisse. Played three years at JUCOs and then one at UIW.

Oh for sure. But I also think this is easily explainable to recruits as to why HC isn't there. Assistants just have to step up and not see it is a barrier.

FWIW: I continue to hear good things about Gipe and his relationship with players. I would figure that PT is probably the "closer" in Mooney absences but maybe Gipe plays a bit bigger role with him out.

Kevin Miller, 6'0 G out of Central Michigan, only played in 4 games this season due to injury but averaged 18.5/game in those 4.

We're clearly prioritizing a scoring G, which makes sense given what we all saw this year. I'm somewhat surprised we've only reached out to 3 guys 6'8 or taller, as I think there's room for one more big guy alongside Quinn, Bigs, and Walz.

There are a lot more guys under 6'8 than 6'8 and over, and while we could maybe use another guy with size, we don't want to use one of our spots on just anyone with size. College basketball is about guard play. Most teams play at least 3 guards now, so you don't need as many bigs. We need scoring guards, so it makes sense we are focusing on that more than anything right now. Quinn, Walz, Bigs, Noyes, and even Tanner, who rebounds well for his size, would be more than adequate if we had the right scoring guards with them. Also, maybe Tyler comes back.

Very interesting. I think it is probably time for him to move on - BUT - being a year older unfortunately only hurts his draft possibilities - especially in that his handle, shot etc do not seem improved. So instead of playing in front of 30 people a night in the G league (i know exceptions, but that is more the norm), maybe he puts off the real world and comes back again to try to go out on a positive note. Unfortunately, as sman noted before the season, he probably is best as a big forward for us, paired with Quinn or Walz. Would be a big boost to our talent level.
Lineup:
Guard - Nelson/SMith/Dji
Guard - Transfer / Roche/ Randolph
Wing - Burton / Noyes/ (Roche/Randolph)
Forward - Bigelow /Burton (Noyes)
Center - Quinn / Walz

Spiders clearly need help from portal. I support the concept of going after the best available.

However, if we are honest with ourselves we know that an annual portal raid WILL NOT cure what ails Mooney basketball. We may well bring in some good players, Spiders did that last year as well. Each of us got to see the results first hand. Though their wasn't a ton of talent on the roster, the main issue was not the portal player or the returning player. The biggest problem was the ability of the coach to assess his roster, and then blend said players efficiently.

As stated previously, Mooney is not good at this. This season is NOT the first time that he has proven the point. We may well bring in 3-4 more good players. But, then the work of putting it together (to attain maximum success) starts. In a short period of time, Mooney has to figure out what combinations of players, skills, and styles will blend together to create a winning season.

He wasn't able to do it in 22-23, and he had a fair number of regulars returning. I'm sadly confident that Mooney won't be able to do it next year either when he has fewer experienced regulars returning. Like everyone else, I have hopes, but, in the real world, I'm willing to bet that Mooney can't and won't get it done. I predict that the need to adapt to the changing college basketball landscape will eventually bring the end of Mooney's coaching career. Problem is, we have to watch it, and put up with it, for the next several years (however much longer they continue to extend his contract).

putting the right lineup together is crucial.
Burton is a heck of a talent. but if he came back and we put him out there with Nelson (or Dji) at the 1, plus Bigelow and Quinn ... we've got the same problem as this year. there's just not enough shooting.

Maybe while he’s recovering the assistants can put together a highlight package to recruits that just happens to include all the times announcers have mentioned Mooney being a future HOFer and a “great coach but even better person” and send that out.

I agree, but it’s not the 19 points and 10 rebounds that’s the problem. All starts with the lack of a QB. You could start with 12 a game out of Roche if Nelson knew where he was.

and to know how to create situation off dribble that opens the 3 . I have confidence none that is my truth . This talent to do should already have been growing with years of play before as a Spider .
