This Week's Fire Mooney Thread

I know Everyone wants to hate on vcu but the a10 got pooped on in bid and seeding this year. Deeper runs by a10 teams generate respect for the league and future consideration when they give bids and seeding out in subsequent years. Blasphemy I know but reality.

If that were the case La Salle would have given the league more plug. Alas, they're in financial difficulty.

Are you referring to their sweet 16 run from a few years ago? Not sure I understand your point.

Past years success in the tourney for a conference has zero impact on next year's selection criteria. It is strictly for bragging rights among conferences. I hope St. Joes knocks out the one remaining Pac 12 team tonight.

97 not sure I agree that it has zero impact -- but do agree very very limited and very very isolated. But I do think it has an impact on early season tourney's and similar

You are kidding yourself if you don't think prior success improves a program's and conference's perception with the selection committee. It's not about recency, it's about longevity. Being there more frequently and performing better than other conferences does provide bragging rights but it also elevates the perception in successive years that a conference/team belongs in or higher seeded.

P5 teams have a favorable bias due to long history, the A10 builds its own bias every year we go deeper in the tournament.

T, you are right. The A10 sucks and with the departure of Xavier, Temple and Butler is the new CAA. OSC

The A10 would be a more respected conference if commuter schools like vdu did not accept non qualifiers. OSC

I am talking about that. It had minimal impact on the league as a whole.
I don't disagree regarding a single instance like lasalle, I'm talking about a continued body of work. Having multiple teams make the S16 or deeper is how the perception gets built.

On Gary Parrish' podcast (CBS' Eye on College Basketball), they discussed Brad Underwood's options for next year, and they talked extensively about St. Louis for him. They talked about the top jobs in conference and mentioned Dayton and then VCU. Then MAYBE St. Joe's and GW. Nary a UR mention. Mooney is driving UR into obsoletion.

K, heard the podcast on my morning walk. Was dissed at first but then realized that he knew nothing about the A10. But then why would he? OSC

X seemed to carry the A-10 for a while making the S16 in 8,9,10 but
Then in '11' UR, '12 XU, '13 LSU, '14 UD
Before missing last year
If '16 SJU then 5 different A-10 teams in 6 years.

Go Hawks!

Defending the league find a way to do so other than to attack our program -- attacks can be direct or indirect

Tough break for Bembry at the end.

I have generally found Gary Parrish to be reasonably knowledgeable about the A-10. The best of the national commentators/writers seems to be Jon Rothstein, though, at least as far as the A-10 goes. He knows his stuff, and prides himself on knowing lots of folks that are not from huge conferences.
