This Week's Fire Mooney Thread

I have the same feeling Ulla....but it must be nice to not have to worry about those games, right?

I myself wouldn't know, my long term memory is fading.

Why aren't the trolls celebrating down at the car wash?

Actually since March 2011.

And to think how close it was to never happening.....they'd be no where near where they are today had the damn selection committee done their job. Credit them for making the most of it. I wonder if we had lost the A10 title game if that would of knocked them out of an at large bid considering we murdered them that year.

Two of their five top career scorers are native Richmonders who wanted to go to UR but were denied. We were the first in state school to play them home and home, we saved them twice by letting them in the CAA and then A10. I feel that we have created this monster in a sense.

Boomer sooner!!!!

If vcu loses next round it still would be a season spiders fans would die for. Vcu is beginning to make it a typical year. Making the final 32 is commonplace. You guys dont like hearing it but the UR program isnt even in the same stratosphere as VCU under Mooney. Sorry to say it but its the truth.

You're not breaking any news here.

If true, I would like those supporters to identify themselves.
Ok, I'll bite. "Making the final 32 is commonplace."
My definition of that is 175 of 350 D1 teams have made the round of 32, 5 times each in the last 10 years.
To me, that is a newsflash!

What I said is that Its becoming common place for VCU. For UR it would be a very memorable year. I was saying it to retort the stupid comment by Ulla.

The unwashed season ends on Sunday. Book it. Question is by how much. I say 8.

Wright state just canned their coach who went 109-93 in 6 seasons. No NCAA bids in that time though. 54% winning percentage.

The way we were.....

The Original 15-2 Upset, Richmond Over Syracuse

Release: 03/18/2016

25 years ago, Richmond became the first basketball program to ever upset a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The 15th-seeded Spiders, under head coach Dick Tarrant, knocked Syracuse in Cole Field House.
Since then, seven teams have pulled the feat, including Middle Tennessee on Friday night over Michigan State.

Watch below as members of that 1991 team recall Richmond's national moment.

The Original 15-2 Upset, Richmond Over Syracuse (Scroll down to watch the video.) Pretty amazing. Wonderful to see so many of the players and Coach Tarrant still in Richmond and apparently still very close to the program.

My point was..

Do I think we should we should be better? Yes!

Do I think we should change? Yes!

What that change in part or in whole should be is another discussion.

Do I want to be better than VCU at basketball? Yes!

Should that be our first benchmark?

Given how they have handled their program over the last 6 years as evidenced by the list at the bottom of this page
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Men's_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament_consecutive_appearances

I would say there are other steps to take first.

Just as yours was in response to Ulla. Mine was in response to so many here who think that VCU in its current state is an average program.

But yes, I will be cheering for it to stall and wither instead of getting better tomorrow. But I do not consider that the most significant component of our improvement just a very satisfying one.

Great video, and wonderful remembrance. Hope to see it again.

Getting back to the "Fire Mooney" topic, it appears that Lonergan has declined to even be considered for the Rutgers job. Maybe once they work through all of their candidates Mooney might be the next guy up.

CM name nearly synonymous with the Richmond program which is nearly synonymous with mediocrity. That is all.

How much money goes to UR?
much more than you earned!
but seriously - your team looked much better than some of those PAC 12 teams in the Dance.

A few things watching this tournament has confirmed to me:

Smaller teams can out rebound taller teams, when motivated and coached properly
The most athletic teams doesn't always win, skills matter
Color announcers can explain the problems with the switching defense within a few minutes of watching it, but it takes some coaches a couple of seasons

anything I've Missed?
.

I know Everyone wants to hate on vcu but the a10 got pooped on in bid and seeding this year. Deeper runs by a10 teams generate respect for the league and future consideration when they give bids and seeding out in subsequent years. Blasphemy I know but reality.
