Podcast with SVP and Stanford Steve is up from Tuesday on ESPN (link above). Really good conversation--I hope with the COVID pause that Coach and staff keep the momentum going. I admit, I have not been a Mooney supporter, so hopefully this is the start of him turning me around.

This has been the most loose I have ever seen or heard Mooney between this off-season and his interviews. Even in those NCAA seasons he was a little reserved. This is a very different interview than what you hear in the local media market. Highly recommend listening to all of it.

Mooney does sound looser in this interview and recent interviews as well. But when you think about it - it makes total sense. The season was cut short last season in what looked like a more than likely NCAA berth for the Spiders. The AD gave him assurance an extension was coming - and through the COVID storm - Mooney got a 2 year extension. And with the COVID environment - he has the ultimate excuse (as does every other coach in the country) if the team underperforms or doesn't reach the tourney, you can blame it on the COVID changes and crazy schedule, limited practice, disruptions, etc.
With that being said - I think UR will have a successful season. I honestly don't think NCAA will make to a tourney, but I think UR will be in the position just as last year to argue we were going to make the tourney - and the end result of that will be and should be another contract extension.
Assuming by next fall we get the general public vaccinated - then we can return to normal with college sports. And by that time - Mooney will have extended his contract 3-4 more years at over $1 million a year.
Under these circumstances - I would be pretty loose as well. It's basically like a no lose situation this year for Mooney and his future at UR.

There’s no reason we can’t or shouldn’t have a tourney by May at least. Enough people should be vaccinated by then — it’s six months from now.

A lot more personality shows here than is normally shown. Great interview.

Corporate sponsorships don't care about logic, unfortunately. They think quarterly, not big picture.

Don't count on the vaccine being ready for general population by May. And if that is the case - why are they playing the season now - will it then go on pause in March for a 2 month layoff then the NCAA tourney?
Pitino really had the best idea - he stated the NCAA should have delayed basketball till about February or March and just played a conference schedule. Then have the NCAA tourney in May and call it May Madness.

I think that might have worked much better than the current setup but just like in previous instances, the NCAA makes decisions based off money and after missing last year's tourney - they will do anything to get it played this year in March/April.

It’s was a great interview, because it wasn’t all about the team and Richmond. That’s not to say it wasn’t positive; it was just personal. Thank you for posting this.

This really is a nice interview. He seems incredibly relaxed, and in a good way!
Weaver, totally agree. My first thought was it was a R E L A X E D Mooney. Generally spoke from his heart with a little couching here and there. Saw more of the man and less of the plastic, obligatory, canned coach speak which believe most ardent followers are tired of hearing.

Thanks for posting SpiderFan.

Can’t think of too many D-1 coaches that don’t usually have “canned coach speak”. Heck, Coach K may be the worst. LOL

32Counter actually posted this first, just not on its own thread. I listened to the podcast and posted about it on the other thread a day before this thread was created.

Regardless, it was a refreshing interview and if Mooney always sounded like this, he may not have had the naysayers a couple of years ago. Why is it always articles and interviews outside of the local area that are superior?
