Still trying to get over the JMU game, anyone know anything about the Hatters?? We need a blowout or I might explode.

I can't find any odds for this game. Is it that insignificant for the odds makers? They had Niagara vs. ST. Joe's odds. Maybe they don't consider A-SUN a legit conference?

Stetson and Bethune Cookman are amongst the worst 50 D1 teams. Beating them by a large margin is meaningless, it won't mean that our team has corrected any of the glaring deficiencies exposed in JMU game. And losing to one of them, is going to make the ledge, a very crowded place. Wake will be a better test. On the road, they are short 3 players, it should be a winnable contest.

at this point, don't think we have any cred in talking about beating them by a large margin. we should just hope for a win

You are correct, but, if this isn't a 15-20 point win it will be an OMG reality check.

At least 4 of the newcomers SHOULD play extensive minutes, which could be a good thing.

We are playing a low budget program. We should win easily without working up a sweat. But JMU game convinced me, that this year's team was way overrated. So, time will tell.

Yes, play newcomers. I want the veterans to start to fear, that their starting roles and minutes played, are at risk. They should be.

What a crazy half. The offense is pumping on all cylinders. There are still some defensive lapses, but it is looking better than our first game.

Wood is looking impressive, as is JP. Fore is looking good too. Haven't seen much of JJ yet, but he was put in. Hopefully we see PF in the 2nd half.

We're playing Stetson, good grief.

Can't we just enjoy a good offensive show? Even though we are playing a horrible team we are beating them like a good team should. We have a lot of players who can hit outside shots, something we have not had in a while. The offense is going to be good this year.

Offense looked good, defense very week. Game over in 1 hour 41 minutes Amazing .

Most points scored by Richmond since 1979. We have played a lot of bad teams since 1979, but this was our best offensive performance. Our defense is still very bad, we have allowed 85+ points in both of our games this season.

11, still think MW can't shoot? He should be starting over DT. And Kwan should be starting as well. Having said that I want to give props to Deon. He gets a lot of grief here but he played with a lot of passion tonight and really hustled on both ends of the floor.

My opinion of Wood is changing for sure, if he continues to play well I will admit I was wrong (and I will be very happy as well). Here are some comparisons between Wood and DT this year

3p%
MW: 50%, DT: 50%

2p%:
MW: 40%, DT: 100%

Defensive Rebounding %:
MW: 13%, DT: 32% <- Deion has pulled in almost 1/3 of all shots missed by our opponents when he is on the floor!

I am going to wait until we play some more games before coming to any conclusions.

Benedictine or 1/2 WCAC teams around DC would be easily favored over the Hatters.

We have played teams every year just as bad as Stetson was tonight. We haven't put up this many points while doing it in almost 4 decades. There are things we can learn from this game, we have good outside shooters and will probably have a good offense this year. But we can also take away the fact that our defense allowed one of the worst teams in the country to score 85 points. We have a lot to work on defensively, but this team will be able to put up points.

nothing that happened in this game means anything. Except maybe that our defense was still bad!

Fan2011 - - The DT stats vs MW are a joke. In the game that mattered, DT didn't take a shot (which keeps the percentages up since now all shots came against an overmatched opponent but sure doesn't help the team) and had 3 rebounds. Also nice to put up those def rebound numbers after a game were DT had some defensive boards to make it look like he has rebounded better, but again, his 9 boards today against an overmatched opponent mean nothing (not to mention they ignore that MW had 5 offensive rebounds). Stats can tell any story you want them to tell if you keep looking hard enough. I like the eyes test to verify what stats show and vice versa. Its been three years and both say he's really really limited as a player and two games worth of stats skewed by a meaningless game against an awful team wont change that. Yes he played well today.

First of all, Wood had 0 defensive rebounds in the first game so saying Deion only had 3 isn't a good argument that Wood is a better rebounder.

Either way I agree with you, the stats are a complete joke and very skewed, that is the point I am trying to make. The DT stats are not representative of him as a player, and perhaps the same could be said for Wood as well. We need to see a few more games before we can tell how good Wood will be, that is all I was trying to say.

After 4 years of starting and lots of playing time to expect DT to all of a sudden become the player we thought he would be is foolish, at least giving MW more playing time their may be some substantial improvement, and we get another year. DT will always be a valuable player just not as a starter.

I am not saying DT is a better player than Wood, I am not even saying that DT is improved. I am just saying we can't use the performance of the first two games of the season to judge our players and using the example of DT statistics as evidence.

Some quick take-aways from tonight's game:

1. TJ had the kind of game we all expected to see. Tonight's game proved that he needs to stay out of foul trouble, and that if he is in there he will do some good things.
2. Deion was much stronger in tonight's game. He had at least 3 nice blocks (a 4th that did not count), and had a nice drive to the basket too. Would love to see him getting the ball within dunking distance and see him take it up.
3. Terry again showed some nice inside moves. However, he also showed, tonight, that he is a bit too confident of his own ball-handling. He needs to take one move, and take the shot. When he takes his time, turnovers will happen, and we saw a sampling of that tonight.
4. KFore looked good again at the PG spot. What I loved about his game tonight was that he had a boat-load of rebounds (8 if the box-score is correct). Compare that number to KA's rebounding stats last year and it would take KA about 8 games to match those RB numbers. Khwan also had a few nice assists, and again took it aggressively took it to the rack. I can see his jumping ability resulting in some really nice "steal" "block" and rebound numbers, not to mention assists. He definitely looks like a "keeper."
5. I am still not convinced that Marshall Wood is the real-deal. However, it is a mortal lock that his outside shooting is stronger than that of any of our 3 seniors and definitely stronger than two.
The bad news tonight was that our 2nd-team players were outplayed by a very weak team. At one stage, when we led 85-50, our back-ups (largely) were outscored by 24-15. I felt that our back-ups would be strong this season, but this game suggests that they have some hard work to do. Paul and Julius Johnson both look like they will need to work hard in practices to earn playing time. I liked what I saw from Jessee P, but he got taken out early, and did not re-appear. Hopefully, the coaches were not upset about anything, and this was just a move to get the others more PT. JP showed a nice stroke, and he definitely hustles, which can buy him minutes.

Overall, I believe we are not nearly as good as we looked against Stetson, and not nearly as bad as we looked against JMU (I hope). And, our offense should be stronger than last season, and our defense just needs to get back to where it was last season. The Wake game could be a "defining" game for us, and will likely tell us a lot about what we have and how far we may go.

I don't think we can use the first two games to judge the NEW players, and I don't think we need to judge the returning players on these two games. We pretty much already know what we have as far as they are concerned. We knew Terry and TJ would be really good offensively, and they have been. We knew Trey and Deion can't shoot free throws or make jumpers, and they haven't done either. We knew SDJ would run a little hot and cold but could put up a bunch of points in a hurry, and he has. Etc etc.

Bench Deion Taylor. He has gotten worse every year, but Mooney has some kind of bromance with him. Cline gets the hook if he even farts, yet Taylor continues to start regardless of how poorly he plays. I'm still in shock over consecutive air-ball free throws.

Wood had 17 points tonight, neither one of the 2 other players we ride here for being offensively challenged have scored that many points in a single game in 3+ years in a Spiders uniform

Marshall is a very good player who will hopefully start soon. OSC

Instead of starting, Khwan may be our 6th man, like Shawndre last year, and Kendall before that...

What is the average total for both teams in all D1 games so far this season vs last season? I know this isn't right but it feels like it went from 120 to 160...

It will be interesting over the next month to see what the new normal is.
