Shaka Smart to Texas?

Gopher, some Ram fans only come here to gloat, criticize, or stir s*&%. Sorry if our fan went overboard, if you come in for real discussion you're welcome back. BTW I know many college coaches and not one HC that doesn't have an agent. So Shaka doesn't have an agent I would be surprised. Not always full time. HC's don't want to negotiate hard with their employer.

WOW, all of these years wondering why there were so many bicycles on the rpi campus....who knew

I heard a rumor, he rode into the Broad Street Costco on one of these.

Is it true?

Hoping Shaka stays. Guy has kind of grown on me. Also, while I do think his pressing style is very effective at the college level, he has not shown much ability to expand on his efficiency teaching half court offense. If he leaves, it seems that there will be a good chance we will be facing Hurley x 2 in the A10, with Bobby moving to VCU. While I think Dan has done a very nice job so far at URI, I think Bobby will ultimately be the top dog - and don't want to see that at VCU. I think he will be a guy that could unlock all the potential in these last couple of classes that Shaka has recruited so well. Dear Shaka, Please stay. Your friends, Spider Fans.

I was thinking if Shaka left VCU, would VCU call back Mike Rhoades from Randolph-Macon, who left Shaka's bench last season to be head coach at Rice. He was Shaka's longest tenured assistant coach at VCU and the last to leave.

Well, golly, since he was the Siegel Center at 7 last night, he clearly was not talking with Texas about their vacancy. I guess Shaka doesn't possess one of these handy new fangled devices called a "phone", that enables people to talk to other people who are not in the same location.

Funny stuff 97 - I am thinking that Texas cannot afford to have a private jet waiting for him at 7:45 PM either.

He has played the game well and got raises for his assistants, a new practice facility, better food amenities, etc etc. I will be interested to see what he squeezes out this time. I am guessing he dropped a little call to Jon Rothstein and asked him to drop a tweet. A day later he will have some new goodies, maybe some type of mini submarine to film the sessions in the James River?

If Shaka leaves, they'll probably hire either Will Wade (UTC) or Rhoades, both former assistants. Will be interesting to see how much the cache of "Havoc" deteriorates with random-looking white dudes named Mike or Will running the ship. I suspect it would fall pretty hard and fast.

Alternatively, they could hire a bigger name who will run his own system, and Havoc will officially be dead. Either way, it would be an awesome day in the RVA.

And if Shaka stays, we'll just beat him two or three more times next year and laugh at the VCU kids who have to pay $500 a year in student activities fees to keep him.

And it also brings out the trolls as well. You're our crosstown rival, so yes, there is interest in what happens with your head coach.

We can't do that and usurp all the PR work done by the RTD, local sports announcers, and his unending legion of fans.............. We are just a small school in the West End that by some strange twist of fate won 2 of 3 over Smart coached RPI this season...............Shaka Smart is already the folk hero of untold millions...............and counting.......................

I don't think there is any question that this is a real possibility. I've got a VCU buddy who's pretty active over there and he told me that Texas is a program they think he'd have a tough time turning down. Hard to blame either side - he is clearly a talented coach and has the personality and charisma to not get lost at a football school. He has taken VCU as far as they can realistically expect to go on a consistent basis. He needs that next level guy to realize his goals and those players go to Power 5 conferences 99% of the time. He's done a great job and it's probably time for him to move on.

VCU fans crack me up. Supposedly Smart doesn't want to go to a "football" school...yet apparently his dream job is Florida. A football school.

guys, if you recall when grant left, we all thought, that is it, sinking to the bottom now. did not happen and probably will not happen. the vcu position is a solid job and they will be able to attract a top-flight guy again. probably look at florida assistants again since they have had great success with them. if shaka leaves, don't jump for joy, am sure we will get more of the same going forward.

Interesting to consider that former VCU coaches are both unemployed as (head) coaches now (Capel is an assistant, may get ASU job). Not necessarily a cautionary tale, Capel was at OU for 5 years and Grant at UA for 6, but tough to compete at that top tier level.

I think TX has the cred to build a really good program and they had loads of talent this year but just couldn't quite get it together.

I'd be pretty inclined to take the UT job if it was offered.

If Shaka leaves for Texas, Lambs will likely hire Mike Rhoades, his buyout will be cheap, and the Lamb Fans love him. Every time something goes wrong on Broad Street, the fans all start talking about how it would have been different if Mikey was still there.

Capel and Grant are excellent examples. Mooney and Smart, I think, have learned from their situations and from many before them like Marshall and Few. when you find a good situation, stay unless the bigger job is a great situation. a place where you can't win enough gets you paid, but eventually unemployed. Texas could be a really good situation.

I hate VCU, and Smart leaving would cause their fans some pain so I'd enjoy that. but while I always hope VCU loses, I like having them strong. I want the games with them to be huge. they push us to be our best, and the games are a lot of fun. so part of me hopes he stays. but I'll get over that fast if necessary.

Do you think VCU fans care if we are strong? They gloated when they beat us the year we won 8 games.

According to Twitter, Shaka is talking to Texas via Texas' search agency, so both can maintain "plausible deniability" of direct contact.

I don't have a problem with Shaka, Mooney has him figured out. It's you I don't like.

I do not care whether you like me or not. Other schools have figured Mooney out. They do not want him including a lot of UR fans.

Shaka at VCU is BMOC.He calls his own shots. At Texas,Shaka would be in the large shadow of Longhorn football. He would feel pressure immediately.Them Texas boosters carry a ton of weight. There are no boosters at VCU.Shanka controls his environment now.It won't be the case in Austin.

VCU has no boosters? You think there are no big donors that carry weight in the VCU program? The tide has certainly risen in that area, any idea of the required annual donation to get good seats for basketball these days?

Has created much money for the Ram Athletic Foundation though.

Will be needed though to fund all sports in the new "cost of attendance" program.
Big deal starting next year. Not sure how some schools can compete in some sports especially outside of football & basketball.........

Yes, but those boosters love Shaka Smart, and why not? The boosters at Texas are completely different. JMHO. Shaka Smart should stay, because he is an excellent addition to the A-10 ranks. He is part of the reason the A-10 is not a one bid league.

GTFOH. The A10 was a multi bid league before Smart joined the league and will be long after he's gone.

There's a difference between respecting your rival and jock sniffing. You're jock sniffing.

The A10 has had multiple bids in 12 of the last 13 seasons... VCU has been here for 3 seasons.

I'll take the bait. What is the min donation these days?

Min donation? Case of PBR, a vape kit, and a loyalty oath to bash UR at every function.

He won't answer unless you say something critical of VCU. That is what triggers his arrival on our boards. Try again and he will come back.

VCU rolled into the A-10, shoved you aside, and then stole your lunch money (at-large bids). Then Davidson turned around and did the same thing. And let's not forget Dayton, GW, UMass, St Joes, St Louis (who've all danced recently).

UR - 14 yrs in the A-10, 3 NCAA appearances.

VCU - 3 yrs in the A-10, 3 NCAA appearances (as Christian Laettner would say, "impressive!")

Be thankful, little Spideys......getting the Rams 2-3 times a yr gets you those Top 50 RPI games you so deeply covet and an automatic RPI boost.

Shaka, quite frankly, is a big deal (as evidenced by his annual April tango w/ the big fish).

As for Moon-Dog -- he doesn't get so much as a second look from some two-bit skank waitress at the Three Chopt Denny's.

CAA - I know that waitress. First off, she is a VERY nice person and long-time VCU grad. And while you may have knowledge that her morals were questionable in the past, I think "two-bit skank" is a both demeaning and harsh.
