The Trump Administration

Hey did you know President Harry S. Truman tried to buy Greenland in 1867? Even though he wasn't born until 1884? Fox News, gentlemen.

Trump also says he's looking into Hezbollah's participation in the Jan. 6 terrorist attack on the Capitol.

And, he speaks out on gas heaters and shower heads, two of the most pressing issues of the day.

On gas heaters:

"The heat is much better. It's a much better heat. As the expression goes, you don't itch."

Shower heads:

"It's called rain. It comes down from heaven. And they want to do no water comes out of the shower. It goes drip drip drip ... you can have all the water you want. It makes no difference."

Our next president. A very stable moron.

Was Harry Truman president in 1967? Or was he looking to purchase it for a personal island?

All I read says Panama is controlling the canal. Is there ANY evidence China is running it, or is Fatso just lying again.

Believe we as a society would be better if called the President, love or hate him, as the President rather than Fatso. This gets us no where other than further apart.

I will try to better once sworn in, currently Joe Biden is our President, DJT is President Elect. But still no answer to my question, ANY evidence?

Trump’s other claim, that China is seeking to exert more control over Panama and the Canal Zone, is not without merit. In 2017, Panama signed a joint communique that stressed it would not maintain any official ties with Taiwan, the self-governing democracy that China’s ruling Communist Party claims as its own territory. Since then, China’s influence in the area around the canal has grown.

Q2: What is China’s influence in the Panama Canal?

A2:
Chinese companies have been heavily involved in infrastructure-related contracts in and around the Canal in Panama’s logistics, electricity, and construction sectors. These projects fit naturally with China’s BRI vision, onto which Panama was the first Latin American country to sign in 2018. This, along with Panama’s recognition of China, boosted China’s already existent footprint in the Canal, and Chinese companies have since positioned themselves at either end of the Panama Canal through port concession agreements. In 2016, in a $900 million deal, the China-based Landbridge Group acquired control of Margarita Island, Panama’s largest port on the Atlantic side and in the Colón Free Trade Zone, the largest free trade zone in the Western Hemisphere. The deal established the Panama-Colón Container Port (PCCP) as a deep-water port for megaships, and the construction and expansion was carried out by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a company also active in China’s island-building initiatives in the South China Sea, and the China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC). The location of the port on the Canal has since allowed China to capitalize on Canal expansion. Additionally, in March 2021 the Panamanian government began the process of renewing the lease of Hutchison Ports PPC, a subsidiary of Hong Kong–based CK Hutchison Holdings, which serves as operator for the ports of Balboa and Cristobal, two major hubs of the Canal’s Pacific and Atlantic outlets, respectively.

Furthermore, in 2018, a Chinese consortium led by CHEC and CCCC announced it was awarded a $1.4 billion contract for the Canal’s fourth bridge, which then-president Varela called “the fifth most important project in the history of the country.” More recently, China Construction Americas finished the Amador Convention Center along the Pacific side of the Canal, a project contracted under the Varela government and funded by Chinese loans. China has also invested in energy-related facilities along the Canal. For example, the Chinese group Shanghai Gorgeous invested $900 million to build a natural gas–fired electricity generation facility. As an economic foothold into Latin America, the Panama Canal is no doubt an important gateway for China’s bid for broader presence and a logistical hub for Chinese goods entering the region.

Because nobody ever called Biden "Sleepy Joe," or other pejoratives, right? And everyone called the vice-president by her given name, right?

Republicans love to dish it out but they sure can't take it and get offended when others mimic their behavior. Snowflake-like behavior, one could say.

Does show investment by China in Panama, attempting to gain influence, but no control over canal. Who was President when the above deals were made. Another example of what we get when we fail to assist our developing friends, isolationism creates problems.

"Fail to assist our developing friends"?

We built the canal at the expense of 30,000 lives. Panama enjoys the fruits ($$$) of our labor and ingenuity.

Without the canal, Panama would still be a province of Columbia.

See time differences:

The Panama Canal, a manmade pathway to connect the Atlantic to the Pacific, was begun by France in 1881, but this venture failed by 1890. Between 1904 and 1914, the United States completed the construction. The canal uses locks to raise ships to about 85 feet above sea level and lowers them down again.

What am I missing with regard to control?

After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the Panamanian government took control in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the Panamanian government-owned Panama Canal Authority. The original locks are 33.5 meters (110 ft) wide and allow the passage of Panamax ships.

China invested wisely, while Trump was Pres to get control of island not the canal. Trump let it happen.

Believe name calling by anyone, regardless of political affiliation or non-affiliation, demeans the office of the Presidency regardless of the occupant. Trump is the worst in this regard. It is unnecessary, childish, and adds zero to the conversation.

Just one man's opinion.

So angry. Hope life gets better for you.
My life is great. My retirement and IRAs did outstanding the past four years (I'll bet yours did too) and I'm still working part-time, so money isn't an issue. My health is OK. My child is doing great in his new job. My dog is happier than ever. My state remains steadfastly blue, as do neighboring California and Washington. It's even sunny out, a rarity for the PNW in winter.

In fact, I'm laughing MAO right now at a joke I just heard.

"What's the difference between Trump and Greenland?"

"You can't buy Greenland."

Would tread lightly here given relatives traded on Biden name for gain. Evidence here is compelling to most informed non partisans. You see no "Buy Biden" facts? Get real.

Woody, got to give it you, keep threads going with snarky post, entertaining, shifting away slightly to throw another “I hate everything not woke far left”. Must ask if you can confirm, is your state a landing place for all those to weird to live in California. If yes, that explains a lot.😜

Grifting by presidential relatives is unfortunately not uncommon. (For some reason, Billy Carter comes to mind today.) Re Biden, he certainly had relatives who parlayed the name but the direct connection to Biden was not proven with a star Republican witness pleading guilty for lying. Comer, Jordan, et al would have had certain Biden appendages tacked to the impeachment wall if they could plausibly had done it.

Certainly, Trump's relatives have used the name. Looking at Trump himself, his shilling of his name both on a wholesale (against crypto until he was for it) and retail (sneakers anyone?) is an equine of a different hue.

I'm not "far" left at all. Centrist Democrat. Something (a centrist) no longer found in the GOP, which has descended into MAGGAT craziness.

My state is pretty normal. Harris won Oregon by about 300,000; she won Virginia by 250,000. Both states are solid blue. So is Virginia a landing place for all those too weird to live in Maryland or North Carolina?

There is going to be ample material the next four years to keep this thread going without my so-called "snarkyness," with the absolute disaster the second Trump administration will be.

Not sure if you are talking about Hunter or Joe Biden, but if you have compelling evidence on Joe Biden doing something illegal please provide to David Weiss, the Trump hand picked US attorney who has investigated the Bidens for over 5 years and came up only with 2 minor charges against Hunter. Or you can provide your evidence to Jordan and Comer since they have investigated Joe Biden for years as well and the only crime that's been prosecuted is their star witness who just pleaded guilty for lying about the Biden investigation.

Weiss is expected to release his full report next week, maybe there will be something (anything) in there that could be used as evidence against Joe Biden alleging illegal conduct, but I would think if he, Comer or Jordan had any real evidence it would have been made public previously.

With respect, if you are not far left, the Democrat Party is in deeper peril than previously believed. Anyone left of you doesn't have a chance to win a national election.

Example: No water in Richmond since Monday bc the water treatment plant failed. Dilapidated equipment, underfunded, but we had enough money to remove a National Historical Site, Monument Avenue.

No hydrant water in LA to fight surging fires despite record snow caps the last two years bc intent on saving the smelt fish. Not to mention Mayor Bass cut the fire budget.

Ironic, coming from the same folks with the self congratulatory yard signs that reduce complex issues to a series of bumper stickers, one of which is "Water is Life". As citizens, we would appreciate you walking the walk rather than talking the talk.

Commonalties? 1) No water, a basic government function, in either situation 2) Blue doctrinaire rule in both, elevating Woke and DEI policies over providing basic services. Fix this attitude or doomed to future defeat.

Misinformation. Attempting to save the smelt fish did not reduce the water supply. Typical of Trump and his minions to lie about the facts during a crisis when people are dying and losing everything they own.

Read closely, seems to confirm rather than deny water policy was a major issue.

When the fire department connects to a hydrant and there is no pressure, government water policy failed. No?

Did you not blame the "water shortage" on the efforts to save the smelt fish? Read your own post. There is no shortage of water, see below from the article:

"That is what Trump is referencing in his post blaming Newsom for the response to the wildfires, where he says the governor "wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish", Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has confirmed.

California's attorney general ultimately blocked the measure, citing potential harm to endangered species and saying that it was not scientifically justified.

Experts say this decision isn't impacting the efforts to tackle these wildfires.

"California is not experiencing water supply shortages at the moment, not in southern California or elsewhere," says Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources.

"There is plenty of water in the reservoirs for firefighting or whatever you want to do with it," he adds.

Jeffrey Mount, senior fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California's Water Policy Center, said: "The federal government does not deliver water from northern California to southern California."

"While efforts to save Delta smelt, along with salmon and steelhead trout, do reduce the amount of water that is moved from northern California by the state at certain times, it has no bearing on the current availability of water for fire-fighting."

Although southern California is currently experiencing a drought, data shows its reservoirs are almost all currently above the historic average for this time of the year. None are at significantly low levels."

Blaming the wildfire disaster in CA on Democrats would be like blaming the flooding disaster that occurred in the mountains of NC on the Republicans (I assume the rural areas around Ashville are republican). Both are unprecedented events that overwhelmed existing safeguards and infrastructure, and, heaven forbid I say it, are more likely the result of climate change more than anything else.

Political deflection. The answer to the question posed is?

"When the fire department connects to a hydrant and there is no pressure, government water policy failed. No?"

Who's deflecting? You said and I quote: "No hydrant water in LA to fight surging fires despite record snow caps the last two years bc intent on saving the smelt fish."

Your statement is false, the intent to save the smelt fish did not create a water shortage per the sources quoted in the article. I'm quoting you and disputing that statement, are you denying making it? Look at your own post.

To answer your question that you posed on a totally different issue, I can't fault government every time there's a natural disaster that's overwhelming. Do you blame Desantis for government hurricane policy when Florida gets clobbered by a hurricane? There was no water shortage. There was no pressure in some hydrants because the pumps had been cut off because the electricity powering the pumps had to be shut off due to the risk of additional fires sparking from the electrical lines. And the demand in certain areas overhwelmed the system, I don't think the urban water system in any city in this country is equipped to handle wildfires of this magnitude when fueled by hurricane force winds and the dry conditions. Getting water to the fires was a problem, but not due to water shortage as you claim and not due to any government shortcomings in my opinion. From what I've read, most knowledgeable people say nothing that the firefighters could have done, even with all the hydrants working, would have stopped these wildfires from causing most if not all of the destruction that has occurred.
