Weber and Graham ( I can't believe I'm defending them) are two of the best players that VCU ever had...how many *'s did they have?

How many did Kevin Anderson have?

Typical, some dude living in his mom's basement has a recruiting blog, so if he's on the list, he must be good.

If Texas offers, (remember that is an IF), Shaka or any coach would walk there to talk job.
 
Barnes took over a program that had been to the NCAA tournament 16 times in 60 years. He has taken Texas to 16 of the last 17 NCAA tournaments.

UT's problems are deeper than Barnes. Look at the rest of their athletic programs. The women's volleyball team won a national championship a couple or three years ago. That is about it. The once legendary baseball program is in shambles. Remember when they brought in Duke's legendary women's coach about a decade ago to revive the great program that was UT women's basketball? She couldn't get it done either. Any large, public, Blue Blood state university in the South should have good programs from top to bottom. (see UVA)

I can't figure out exactly what the problem is. People talk about what a great place Austin is. It is, but it is not really representative of the rest of the state as a whole. It is more of an island or outpost with a bunch of transplants living there. I'm guessing recruits from the Metroplex want to go to Baylor or TCU now. Maybe even SMU.

You could ask that question to the UR players from Texas. Ask the hypothetical that if they had been top 10-50 recruits would they have went to UT or one of the other Blue Bloods such as UK, Duke or UNC. They would give you some good answers.
 
Oh, by the way, Texas just won the national championship in swimming and diving. Texas athletics is doing just fine.

My point was that he has not done enough winning for Texas to justify paying him $2.5M+ a year. Plus, they are Texas. They have their own TV network. They should have very high expectations. I would.
 
True Octaod, My sister lives in Austin and I have been there many times. Cool city to visit, but has nothing to do with the rest of Texas. Very very liberal city, anything goes. Also it is an expensive place to live and you better speak Spanish!!!

I don't really care if Shaka stays or goes. We've shown an ability to beat him.

The ideal scenario probably has RPI further leveraging themselves into retaining him.

agree with Mo...we finally proved this year that we could compete again with the Rams...even with Shaka at the helm and the Havoc BS idolized by many...

it's something of an assumption on my part, but being optimistic, I expect us to continue to compete in the years ahead...

I'd kinda of like to have Coach Smart around for some of the payback...like it, or not, he is a nationally recognized by many in the media as a "young and upcoming" super star coach...every time the Spiders whip the Rams with Shaka at the helm, it's great publicity and recognition for our program...

as far as I know he runs a clean, honest program and is a good role model for his players...

when you beat Coach Smart you know you've done something...not too many even noticed, or cared, when we beat Sonny Smith, Mac McCarthy etc...the rivalry is cooking again...beat a Shaka team and you get noticed...

I hope he stays as long as we're competitive....

WRIC 8 still reporting that Shaka is Texas' first choice as of an hour ago. I don't care either way really, but it would be interesting to see what all his recruits do if he leaves

Who cares? I'd just like to have his nose full of quarters so I could buy a couple more season tickets.
 
That water, or lack of it situation is not going to correct itself. It's just going to get worse. Hopefully the state government is doing something about it instead of leaving it to the localities.
 
our water situation is better than california's but texas has always been in a water problem and with the enormous population explosion, won't get any better. every state has problems and a lot of those probs have been around a while without solution, kind of the way of life.
 
Last time I was in Austin, Lake Travis was about half empty. Sad to see.

The question that many coaches have to face - including Shaka, and maybe one day Mooney if he gets back on these lists someday is - do you want to chase the money and chance to win it all, or stay where you are and just be a consistent winner.

Shaka can stay at VCU, build a very respectable and national program - but his chances of winning a national title are very very slim. Yes - they made the final four once. But that is very very difficult to replicate and it will take several more years to get up to the level Gonzage is NOW on, which in the past 2-3 years and including this year - has been a serious title contender. Or you can stay at the smaller school - like VCU - and be a tourney team pretty much every single year. Maybe make a sweet 16 from time to time. But really - the chances of schools like VCU, Butler, Wichita St., winning it all is very slim right now. Can they follow the path of Gonzage - yes, but that takes time to build that up.

OR - you can go to a bigger school in a bigger conference - like Texas, and immediatley, if your able to get top level - top 50 recruits, you might be able to win it all in 3-4 years. And in the meantime - make as much money as it would have taken you 10 years to make at your previous school. BUT - the risk, you don't make turn it around, and 4-5 years - your out of job and likely back coaching in the mid-major ranks or as an assistant somewhere.
 
local sports radio here reporting this morning that texas is looking for a guy with some nba ties. local sports here is more pro oriented, they do not have any close ties to any of the colleges thus they read it somewhere else and may mean nothing. one of the local morning guys is in complete love with shaka, has been since the final four run and he says, just hire shaka, just hire him.

we had a drought here about 3 years ago and most of the lakes were way down but have had plenty of water the past few years so most lakes, reservoirs are full again. on I-85 right at the ga/sc line, those lakes were down over 20 feet, really hurting for years but was told by a bud in sc that they had some tropical storms come thru and they are back up to almost normal. droughts go from one part of the country to other parts while some areas are flooding, just nature.

Though I do think they would be much more happy with their half court offense and defense.
 
Marshall, Smart, Stevens have to go when the talent runs dry and they are still a flavor of the moment. I'd suggest Stevens timed it right and will probably return IU's call in a season or so. Smart and Marshall in my opinion probably move this year too. Would be great to be Bob McKillop but if you can do it as say a school like Duke as Coach K has it could be even better.
 
Heard this afternoon that Shaka was allegedly in Texas talking with them about the opening. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. And whether he is doing this just down there to milk more $$$ out of VCU is anyone's guess. I assume as long as he keeps winning at the clip he is VCU will consider this the cost of doing business, but if I'm the AD, I'm getting a little tired of this dog and pony show he puts on every year.
 
not sure shaka is doing anything, he is being approached or his agent is being approached. if you have a very good, young coach at our level, he is going to get attention. if you are not willing to put up with that, you don't give him anymore money and you encourage him to walk. of course if you do that, you will be out the door right behind him or you should be. admit it is not fun but it is the business and if you cannot stomach it, need to find another job.
 
Shaka was in Richmond, and gave a talk at the Seigel Center around 7 pm.

He also does not currently employ an agent, nor has he in the past.

Just go Mormon. You'll do more, real good and you may get a few wives out of it. Give it a shot. Hell, ask the hoops holy land guys for a recommendation. I'm sure they have ideas.
