Return to Waterloo where Gilly broke Steals record - UNI Game thread - Wed 8pm ESPN+

kind of a weird set up on that. I think Dji was on the bottom block for some reason? his job being to box. Noyes (I think) was in the 3rd spot, coming around the boxed out guy for the rebound ... but he over-ran the long rebound and the guy Dji was boxing got it. that's where a smallish lineup hurt us.
yeah - I haven't seen a replay but both my friend and I shuddered right after that play and it seemed the night was over ..

Irony is that until last night, our at-large chances were still relatively healthy. If we win the rest of our OOC games (😂) and finish in the top three of the league (😂) I suppose anything is still possible. Otherwise, ehhhhhh.
.

1 win, 14 losses in true road games going back to beginning of last season.
Let's go further...
My quick scan is:
2017-2018 4-8
2018-2019 4-7
2019-2020 9-3
2020-2021 5-3
2021-2022 7-5
2022-2023 1-11
2023-2024 0-3

So you are not of the opinion 8-5 OOC, 10-8 A10, 1-1 Barclay's?

Exactly. We should have been in an all hands, win at all costs mode. Like freaking Hurley was vs UNC the other night - even though that was not a must win game for uconn, that is his mentality. Mooney just lacks the urgency now. He had it his first five years or so. Now he lacks this burning urgency.

We win this very winnable game vs UNI, and go stun Florida and this season was on a totally different trajectory. Instead we are just trying to prep for the A10 tourney. As usual. And I am all in for that, with a healthy Dlo and and a seasoned Tyne, we should be in good shape. But hate this mentality to wait for the A10 tourney every year. If Gilly doesn't put on his superman cape we would have zippo for NCAA appearances in forever.

To your point...Mooney even talked about how UNI played desperate. Well why weren't we the same? Should have been. Don't get it.

At least we made it to December this year before being eliminated from at large consideration. Typically we are done by Thanksgiving.

Based on the A10 and at large teams of late, probably makes some degree of sense to focus on the auto-bid.

To me, the issue is focus and attitude. The Spiders seem to lose focus and lack the win at all costs attitude especially when on the road. Yesterday’s loss was the most disappointing because the Spiders basically were lost from the tip.

I still have belief that the team will play its way into the top 4 of the A10. Granted there is no guarantee and all teams want to be there.

You only get 30 of these games per year. How we collectively as a team and a coaching staff can not get up and ready to run through walls for those 30 instances is beyond me. But when the head coach ongoing mantra it is "really difficult to win on the road" that bleeds through in some fashion to everyone associated with the program. What a terrible things to say out loud and yet it is the constant Mooney says it all of the time and the only reason is he says is because it is a defense mechanism to shield him from his own inadequacies as a coach. He says it to remind himself, so he doesn't have to feel bad for being 1-14 on the road the past 2 years. And if Hardt, were any type of leader himself, he would plop himself down in Mooney's office today and say this losing on the road shit has got to stop. He won't though, they all live in their little excuse filled world of why something can't be done, because it is hard.

With Mooney’s shoot and scoot i could grab 8 or 10 rebounds per game. Most frustrating in the last few possessions last night.

We can criticize ole shoot & scoot all night long but reality is that he’s one of the longest tenured coaches in college basketball. He’s outlasted multiple ADs. He’s proven you don’t have to win on the court to win big on the contract front. It’s ridiculously impressive actually.

Sad but true.

This has served Moon well. I suspect there are some that are satisfied with this. Hell, some of those even post on here and somehow find ways to support and justify more Moon. Mediocrity is not a long term measure of success. If one looks for other intangibles tied to Moon and yell “success”, you can always find some justification with 19 years of this and more on the way. Take it to the bank. For the rest of us, look down the road another 4 or 5 years.

After watching this game our best combo is
King
Diji
Noyes
Bigelow
Quinn
This lineup has the ability to shoot, drive, rebound and has length. They can compete with legit squads physically.
Tyne is playing well but is a 1, Playing two points under 6 feet is troublesome as one will be undersized, get backed down, we over help and it leads to easy baskets and put-backs. Watching our games, we struggle after the tip and at the start of the second half, especially against good longer squads.
Roche has all the tools to compete with Noyes and Diji but just needs to find his mojo. This team has the parts, this is the manual.

Too early in the season to be desperate. They won’t get desperate until the very last minute (2021 comes to mind).

Def agree with you about Dji being more aggressive. When he does drive he’s a problem and there were times I thought he could have taken his man at anytime. I do think we didn’t play our best version of team ball last night. I’ve already said a couple times that we didn’t run our stuff and settled for one on one way too much esp in 2nd. We need Jordan to score absolutely but also need him to play make a little more imo. I’m not worried about TOs yet. I think it was just a bad game all around.
We also had 4-5 close in shots we missed including snowbird by Quinn on beautiful pass.

Even a dribble handoff to Roche gives him the freedom he needs to get a second to shoot. Basic stuff here, I don’t see it happening though. He’s just standing on the perimeter. Not sure if he’s being coached to do that or what.
