Return to Waterloo where Gilly broke Steals record - UNI Game thread - Wed 8pm ESPN+

I just watched the end of the VCU game, I know they lost, but they played with fire at the end....we had guys moping around like their dog died with 5 minutes left....everyone but King and maybe Tyne looked horrible in the second half.
VCU is not currently playing up to their standards but they will beat us twice this year. It's kinda like the sun coming up each morning.

We are beaten down by 19 years of Mooney.

We know the team is trying. What’s frustrating is it appears we have real talent and it will be wasted once again.
Ever notice how many times other teams get offensive rebounds and put backs and how often we sprint down the court without a whiff of an offensive rebound?
How big were the guys guarding Quinn? Why isn't he under the basket?????
What would happen if he and Walz were in there at the same time? last game would have been a good game to experiment. Genius???? Really?

How do they not call a foul when the guy takes out Quinn’s legs on the loose ball?

Yeah usually they do call that. Quinn didn't seen to contest it but I thought they should have called. The other one I'd like to see again is when King got ball blocked out of bounds onto him. Fans etc reacted like it hit him so idk but looked like landed to side of him and what the 1 ref thought at first. Those plays r reviewable but think has to be certain time in game, is that right?

We give up way too many open 3’s. Game closer than should be.

we gave up WIDE open 3s to Heise in the exact same spot 3 straight possessions in 2nd half. One was in transition after Bigs was down on other end but other 2 were half court. Luckily he made just 1. The athletic D I hear about did not show tonight those Midwestern boys ran us all around the court.

You might want to re watch. I swear the takes on this board is insane sometimes

idk if referring to the vcu or Richmond part of his comment, but I had both games going at once, and VCU did play w fire. Everyone style different and our programs r so not sure yet about us. But I agree w 93 on vcu.

They have length again, and I still contend will be good once Bairstwo healthy. They actually had two really bad calls go against them late. One was a clean block that basically let Memphis get to OT. Other a guy was double teamed and basically stuck at baseline and they called a bail out foul on vcu down 3.

It was shocking to see bc not sure I've ever seen that AT vcu.

Talking about re watching us…def don’t care bout vcu.

I would have liked to see us run the offense instead of coming down and just jacking up shots in the 2nd. And like most I think our “team” defense wasn’t good tonight but a couple guys were still solid.

so if we are playing a team more talented than us, we should expect a loss
if we are playing a team with approximately the same amount of talent, we should expect a loss
if we are playing a team on the road, we should expect a loss

how many more creampuffs do we have scheduled at home? That is the number of wins left on the schedule.

Hopefully Odom flames out over there and takes down Clownshow Ed with him.
more likely they get back the injured player, Odom continues to adapt and improve the team and by end of the season they are the class of the A10. As much of a clown show the AD is he is tryong to win and he hired a good coach. Meanwhile Hardt woke up on the couch, saw the final score and rolled back over and started snoring.

Definitely looked like we beat ourselves tonight. I’m not going to bang the timeout drum, but when we come out flat and go down 9-2 that’s the kind of moment I desperately want CM to stop the game and try to hit the reset.

liked that Jordan got it going in 2nd half and that Noyes looked a bit more confident. That said, everyone was off just enough to end up with this result.

Mooney told his buddy Jacobsen he was going to throw him a bone since UNI sucks and this would be like the only OOC team other than JMU and William & Mary that we had ever beaten more than once on the road in Mooney's career, which probably would have gotten Jacobsen fired on the spot.

Mooney was dressed a lot better than Jacobsen. That pullover Jacobsen was wearing looked 2 sizes too big. I'm not joking maybe the thing I respect about Mooney the most is the game day suits for him & staff. Most post covid stayed with the casual pullover look. Moon went back to classy and professional I like it. He's recovered from the mistake of the Hannibal the Cannibal clear mask. Looking like Tom Landry compared to rest of these coaches. If he rocks the fedora like Landry watch out.

I know the timeout discussion has been covered front and back (but here I go anyway) -- obviously they had figured out our defense at this point and were exposing us over and over again. No excuse to not call a timeout at that point, change personnel, change defensive strategy, motivate the guys -- something!

Instead we saved our timeouts, took one after a made basket with about 3 minutes left, took another when we cut the lead from 8 to 6 with about 8 seconds left (when it was too late), and I believe we are bringing at least one timeout back to Richmond.

There were plenty of reasons we lost last night so I don't mean to harp on this only - but it was frustrating to see them exploit us like that repeatedly and us not immediately address it. Timeouts don't magically stop a run, but they should be a tool in a coach's tool belt to fix problems in real time.

A few other thoughts about the game:

- Jordan King is too good and too important to our team's success to have a zero point half. And Neal Quinn is too good at other parts of his game to be shooting 3's down the stretch in a close game.

- This was the sloppiest we've been with the ball this year. Seemed like most of the errors were unforced too. We are improved but we don't have enough margin for error to be turning the ball over like we did last night and expect success.

- I wish Dji would be more aggressive. When he drives early in the shot clock before the defense is set he is a problem to defend. He seems to be doing this a couple times per game, picking his spots, but I wish he'd be a little more assertive with it.

Disappointing result in the end - a game we definitely should have won.

King - we will ride his highs and lows all year long. He finished with 20 points but it was not a good game for him overall. As a result - we struggled early, and couldn't climb back into the game.

Roche - Nothing.

Quinn - okay game. Nothing great, nothing terrible. But in a game where King was struggling, this is where we need more, but just not sure he can give us more.

Bigelow - played well and kept us in the game. But he is inconsistent. His ups and downs will continue all season.

Tyne - he played well. Has some energy to him. Biggest positive about him playing right now is experience for the future. I would keep playing him as he deserves it, but also let him play through his mistakes. The more time he gets, the better off he will be at the end of the season in A10 tourney, and next year.

Bench - DJi and Noyes are our bench. They both gave us a boost off the bench, I think we expect more from DJ but not sure that is feasible on a nightly basis off the bench for him.

Overall - we didn't play good defense at times and we didn't make enough 3's. Our starters were 4-16 from deep. We shot 33% overall while letting them shoot 41%.

Its not rocket science - we will struggle on the road against anyone. We will beat lesser teams at home. And we will probably have 1-2 more upset like performances like UNLV where we win and look good, and then we will probably have 1-2 head scratchers where we lose to teams we should beat. All in all - that will end us up probably around .500 overall.

Def agree with you about Dji being more aggressive. When he does drive he’s a problem and there were times I thought he could have taken his man at anytime. I do think we didn’t play our best version of team ball last night. I’ve already said a couple times that we didn’t run our stuff and settled for one on one way too much esp in 2nd. We need Jordan to score absolutely but also need him to play make a little more imo. I’m not worried about TOs yet. I think it was just a bad game all around.

idk where running around like chickens with their heads cut off falls in the timeout protocol list but it's on there. And after the 3 straight wide open 3s from exact same spot, the 4th possession they had a wide open one on the other side of court but the guy stepped out of bounds. It was like we were going for the Superfecta in Saratoga.

Yes of course. Basketball coaching 101. You learn this just from watching a lot of college basketball. Some of the shit that Mooney is inept at is mind boggling at this level of coaching. And change a defense??? Are you kidding me, lol. He has done that once or twice in twenty years.

Quinn has to be better than 4-11 from the floor with 4 turnovers. Thought he had a very bad game. King scored, but 6-17 from the floor with 5 turnovers is also not good enough.

we suck at halftime adjustments, and have for 19 years

Twice last night I posted during the game we were leaving 3 point shooters wide open. Of course this is nothing new. It’s all part of Mooney’s defense. He owns it, and we got burned badly over and over again. Friends, this is fundamentals of basketball. This flaw in his approach never changes. You get what you give, and Mooney is the gift that keeps on giving to opponents.

Agree here. I didn't think it was lack of effort on D, it was more -- as others have pointed out -- some fundamental flaws that get exposed by good shooting teams. Our backside D overhelps, and then we are giving up wide open 3s. It happens a LOT. But the level of effort was mostly there.

It's a pretty repetitive cycle: a few posters on here start to talk themselves into a "we should beat this bad team on the road" a couple days before the game. Then day of the game, a bunch of folks predict a 5-10 point win on the road. And then we don't win on the road. Trust me, it takes the sting off if you just bet Richmond on the moneyline at home, and the opponent on the money line away from home. It's reliable.

16 minutes, 0-1 shooting, 1 assist, a whole lot of cardio. Again, why is he starting? Other than the BS “to get him out of a slump.” He is not one of our best 5

I've had the thought in the back of my mind for a while that maybe he just isn't going to be able to consistently deliver what we were hoping/expecting to see out of him. The sample size is starting to get pretty large at this point.

I am bad at actually paying attention to schemes etc when watching a game. What were we running on D when not in man to man - what half court D?

The execution was not great. We would run a double team, and they would find a guy wide open at the three. Maybe it was "soft" doubles that caused the problem? When UNI was double teaming they were digging down and making it very difficult on Quinn and others to make the swing pass or find the open shooter.

most of the negatives from last night have already been covered here. as said before, as King goes we go. he didn't have a good game despite 20. and not to get on Neal because he's been great, but not last night. big men have to know not to dribble if a double is coming. go before the double or pass out of it.

tough to overcome both King and Quinn being off. defensively, it has to be scheme issues. individually we have some very solid man defenders. but as others have said, we overhelp from the back side. we give open looks to really good shooters. or at least they're good against us.

strong adjustment from UNI to take away our 3's. we couldn't even get decent ones off in the 2nd half ... and Roche was blanketed in the 1st half. when extending like they were, we should have been able to attack the paint but we couldn't. nice defense by UNI big men when they weren't fouling.

we're not an at-large team based on the OOC obviously, so the goal is to win the A10 and be playing our best ball in March. so I look for positives.
1) might be the best I've seen from Tyne and Noyes
2) Bigelow's 1st half was awesome. looked like Burton at his best out there.
3) Dji continues to impress in all areas.

Their front-end 1 and 1 miss when we were down 4 when we sort of all froze allowing them to get the rebounded was the dagger ...
kind of a weird set up on that. I think Dji was on the bottom block for some reason? his job being to box. Noyes (I think) was in the 3rd spot, coming around the boxed out guy for the rebound ... but he over-ran the long rebound and the guy Dji was boxing got it. that's where a smallish lineup hurt us.
