Nelson Noyes Dread all redshirting. Randolph is not. So really have 11 guys right now until Goose returns. And likely a 9 to 10 rotation max. Of course if injuries hit u might have to burn a redshirt.

This is great news. There is just not enough minutes with all of our 6th year players and am glad these 3 took advantage of this. Interesting that Randolph is not. Does that indicate that he chose not to OR that Mooney thinks we could use him this year.

Randolph was a name mentioned several times by Mooney as possible playing time.

If everyone stays healthy this season, not a lot of minutes for the freshman, makes a lot of sense. It is interesting that Randolph is not. Seems like he is a wing player, where (again if healthy) seems to be our biggest log jam.

Love it, given the situation we're in. Maybe one or more of them grad transfer out in a few years and we don't get four full seasons out of them, but they'd only be bit players if they played this season anyway, so that's a chance I'm willing to take.

yeah, I agree. good news especially for them. little chance to break into the rotation with the depth we have. they can improve their games all year and get stronger, retaining 4 years.

I think we needed to keep one active and Randolph is probably the most ready. tough to burn a year though. I assume coach will try hard to get him some meaningful time, but man we're still deep at the 2 & 3.

I love that Randolph is the one staying eligible this year. He has the most college ready body of any freshman guard in the Mooney era. I think he’s a high energy guy that can come in and add some toughness and physicality we’ve lacked over the years. Now all on Mooney to make it work.

Of course they could all still play if injuries necessitate it, but I think it's a smart decision for now.

Great opportunity for each of them to develop in more ways than one. Just hope all 3 are 100% on board with this decision and take advantage of the opportunity.
Mooney has stated repeatedly, often, and recently that the redshirt decision is 100% up to the players and their families. The coaches have honest discussions with them, give the players as good and up-to-date information that they can, and then it is fully up to the player and their families. But it is unequivocally NOT a decision executively made by the coaching staff.

Personally I’m a little disappointed, was hoping for a lot of blowout wins this year so we could catch a sneak peak of the young guys. Seems like a good choice for them to redshirt though, given this years roster.

From a roster management standpoint, it’ll be interesting to see how this affects next years class. I’m assuming Walz will be in line for a lot of minutes, but (if) we sign another incoming freshman, do they redshirt next year?

I’m also disappointed as well.
This is the best team we may have for quite some time and I’d like to see all the talent we have give us a shot at a final 4.

I'm ok with this. Gives the guys a year to bulk up and the reality is there isn't a ton of minutes available. Randolph is the only one that physically looks ready to handle the rigors of the A10 game in and game out based on our needs right now anyway but I think these three are promising players. Don't sleep on Noyes, I think he's going to exceed expectations here. And I absolutely love we got a Jayem kid on our roster in Nelson.

I think the freshmen are ready, it's just that the seniors came back and there are really no recruiting mistakes on the roster. all 12 active players are solid and then some. so it just makes sense for these 3 to save the year.

fair to say the roster composition is the deciding factor although I would characterize Dread & Noyes as more developmental recruits anyway.

Just judging from their videos, they all looked physically ready to play this year. Dread has a college ready body, Noyes could benefit from the weight room, but the kid definetly has some hops. I think in a normal year, none of these guys redshirt, alas this is not a normal year.

I agree, I'm not sure how much time I see for Randolph with Sherod, Burton, Dji, and Crabtree all ready to play major minutes at the 2 and 3. And then don't forget Goose, who will be back in December. However, Randolph seems both physically and mentally ready to play and this could possibly give us some insurance with Sherod, Crabtree, and Goose all coming back from significant injuries. When he gets his minutes, he will have to come in ready if he wants to keep seeing them. There will be little time for a freshman learning curve this year.

I guess I haven't been paying attention to the videos closely enough. I thought Dread was most college ready type of physical/defensive type of player. Now he apparently is not even close to Randolph?
I had to go back and check and mixed up the two in my head so I was wrong there. I will say from what I saw from Noyes, reminds me a lot of Mike Skrocki with more hops/athleticism, but I am far from a talent evaluator.

Noyes doesn't look nearly as thin as I expected him to be. I think he could play today, moreso at the 3 than the 4, if not for the roster. depending on recruiting we have a bigger need long term for him to put on some more muscle and play the 4 though.

So, unless I am wrong here, next year, assuming everyone that can, uses the extra Covid year, our classes will look like this:

Seniors: Goose, Grace and Sal

Juniors: Burton and Crabtree.

Sophomores: Wilson, Bailey, Randolph

Freshman: Nelson, Noyes, Dread, and Walz.

Dont they have time to decide as well. Like - can't they wait until game 5-6 and see if they are playing and then decide to redshirt? Like if Randolph gets 0 minutes between now and game 5 - can he still redshirt?

I think if he gets 1 minute he can not redshirt, if he gets 0 minutes after 30 games he still can. But not sure.

I don't believe that ended up happening for this year, and haven't seen anything about whether it's progressing for implementation at a later date.

Yep, I haven't seen anything else on it either, but I was thinking something might happen because of what they did with football and the 4 games allowed there.
