Random Thoughts Thread

SpiderRVA -are you really Hardt? Lol. I agree with you, UR doesn’t have the money or balls to fire Mooney. I will be surprised if they have the balls to not extend his contract the next two years.

I'm not Hardt haha...I'll leave it at that. I do think Hardt and PQ have the balls to do it, but I question whether or not they want to. If Sherod doesn't go down and we're .500 in conference play, they'd be taking less of a risk keeping him next year.

This may be far fetched, but I'm bullish on Blake Francis and Gilyard in same backcourt next year with much improved depth on our roster. But hey, optimistic opinions aren't really the thing on this message board so I'll keep that to myself haha.

would you bet a million dollars on 'next year'? $10,000 or even $1000?

Define bullish?. Being a .500 team next year, which would be a significant jump, especially since Moon dog promised we wouldn't play another little sisters of the poor schedule again next year. Bullish on us being an NIT team (that is what I see as the upside). Or are you saying, you think next years we have ourselves an NCAA team.

We really need to hype Mooney so that another school hires him away and pays his buyout.

Gallipoli, get on it.

This would seem more like a good way to do iti that benefits everyone. Sadly, we're light years away from sniffing the tournament as we're currently structured.

I'm bullish that next year we will score more, but give up more points. If we do play some legit p6 teams in the OOC, or Wichita State/Houston types, I'm not bullish on racking up W's.
I will qualify this with: If all our key players are back. Like last off season, if Mooney stays I predict we lose some key guys. The only thing that could save Mooney is the fact GG already had to miss a year, and Sherod coming off missing a year.

I think Mooney is back next year and no one leaves. If key players leave, THEN I think Mooney is let go early. Not sure on the timing of such possible exit though (ie after the season or before), obviously it depends on when the player(s) left.

Players would leave ASAP following the last loss, they would not want to close off there opportunities and openings at other schools.

Hopefully Hardt can make his move on Mooney very soon, so that players know a new coach will be in and give them some hope.

Just throwing this out randomly but signature below is available for use if any person(s) wants to use it as a second billboard. Less threatening than fired being in it, and more or less states a specific result that must be attained. Long overdue result. Sounds fair to me.

Excellent points. Gives the option for Mooney to resign. But he wouldn't do that. Like the signature and message thought.

Just looking through some stats this afternoon and I found an interesting connection.

We are #349 out of 351 in offensive rebounds per game (just 5.7 per game). Not at all surprising.

Amazingly #350 is Loyola Chicago and #351 dead last is Wyoming. In case you've blocked it from your memory, I'll remind you that we lost to those two in back to back games earlier this season. And somehow we were out offensive rebounded in both games.

It's not the talent on the court. We've had plenty of that, despite all the recruiting misses and transfers since 2011. We've got a HC and staff who simply can't use that talent and create an elite WINNING program. And yes, it's all about winning. Why any $ that I MIGHT give to UR sports until changes are made will only be designated to LAX and teams that deserve it. If only CM and Huesman could learn from Chemotti how to build a program that expects championships, schedules hard, develops players, and all the other fundamentals that create a winning culture.

I know nothing about LAX, but I bet if you were to watch a LAX early season practice, vs a mens basketball early season practice you would see a clear distinction. I wonder if Hardt sits down and looks at this? The layup line and matador defense and lack of rebounding are all learned behaviors by the players. This is on Mooney.

Three minutes of crap and a player who bled for you for four years and you have no trust in him to give him another chance. We're not talking about some frosh here. What a senior night experience for JJ and his family. You loser Mooney!
I agree, JJ is just as good as Wojick. Wojick is too slow and out of position. At least JJ makes them pay for getting by him.

I stopped watching in second half cause I knew was going to happen and needed to grill some seafood. But why when you are successful inside, you go away from it the second half. Gilyard also tried to force too much

As all A10 teams do, they went to zone to put us on ice, and it worked just like it has against Mooney teams for 14 seasons.

Just reading 23's post about the Ivy league and academics and recruiting and etc. etc. ..... so Mooney only can get smart recruits but it takes forever for these smart players to pick up his systems.

Harvard's junior class includes four top-100 national recruits. They have a fifth coming in next year.

HARVARD.

Yale has had some really high level talent last 4 years. They had the kid (Makai Mason) that was at Baylor this year - got hurt so had to grad transfer I think. And two other studs on that team that lost to Duke in the 2nd round.

Amaker can recruit for sure, not sure on his X and O's but when you can recruit top 100's you don't need as much.

We did get Tyler Burton from NEPSAC. Who was our last guy, Gonzo? Lot of HM talent in the New England Prep Schools. Hell, Look at Schmidt - he is working this well. We have to wait at the end of the line and hope we get lucky.

I'm about to start drinking, so forgive me if my posts start getting very aggressive towards the pitiful state of our hoops program, and one excuse mongering millioniare coacho_Oo_O:mad::mad:

The Crimson loses 5 seniors to graduation this year (all 2 stars as rated by Rivals) and they have 5 incoming freshman commits (four 2 stars, one 3 stars). All of their highly rated recruits are rising seniors. Funny how they had that one fantastic year. Otherwise, they have recruited at about the same level as UR (based on Rivals ratings). Wonder if they have the best class ever taking the floor next year.

I know probably on the wrong end of this reasoning but thought the off the fingertips of Morreti call that went UVA's way should maybe? not have occurred. Plenty of defections that way that 99%+ go the way of the ballhandler.

Yes the review showed it did touch Moretti's fingertips but I believe if you reviewed every single one of those type plays thoroughly like was done last night, over 50% would show the same result. Just think of those type plays what is involved. I am pro-replay but when is it too much?

Has anyone else heard that we are hiring Rick Pitino and Will Wade as recruiting consultants?

It is too much. The last 2 minutes of games are agonizing to watch. The constant replays take all of the flow and intensity out of the end of the games.

And despite all of the replays, the refs still blow calls at the end of game situation, see UVA-Auburn, so what exactly is replay accomplishing.

Here are the top excuses and how I would debunk them.

1. Academics are holding us back - if that’s the case then why has Davidson been so successful since they joined the league 6 years ago?

2. Youth/inexperience - if that’s the case then how come 12 out of the 14 teams in the A10 right now have 0 or 1 senior in the top 8 rotation? And 8 of those teams are doing better in the standings than we are.

3. Transfers of key players has hurt us - If that’s the case then how come the transfer of Mike Lewis II of Duquesne (their best player) from December hasn’t impacted Duquesne that much?

4. We'll turn it around next year - On what basis? The same way we said that in Terry Allen, Deion Taylor, Trey Davis would turn it around their senior year when we missed the NCAA's? Or when SDJ or TJ were going to turn it around their senior year and we also missed the NCAA's? Mooney has a 0.549 record in 13 full seasons here so far. What makes anyone think we'll start suddenly winning 65+% of our games every year, which is what's needed to be an at-large NCAA team?

I bring up all of this because I want to highlight how many of these "excuses" that we have don't seem to be impacting other teams in the A10. Why is that? Don't get me wrong, if we perform very well and win the A10, I will happily want Mooney to come back another year. I'm just not in the position of a) lowering my definition of success because we have failed to meet them for almost a decade b) make excuses that don't seem to be impacting other programs in our league and c) Ignore history
3-2-1 you're gonna get banned by your moderator for being too negative (realistic).
